Fatal cosmetic surgery: the deadly downside of cheap overseas procedures | 7NEWS Spotlight

Evita Sarmonikas was a beautiful 29-year-old young woman from Queensland. But despite her stunning good looks, she felt insecure about her body. So she decided to have cosmetic surgery. Like thousands of other Aussies, she went overseas where it was a lot cheaper. But Evita had no idea her foreign doctor had an atrocious record of botched operations and suspicious deaths. Tragically, she would become his next victim. Denham Hitchcock joined Evita's sister to confront the doctor in Mexico. This story originally aired in 2016.

This is really sad to me. My grandfather, aunt and cousin are/were renowned plastic surgeons in Mexico. They’re the most ethical people. My grandfather passed away but he was considered a master in plastic surgery having invented techniques and trained many surgeons even around the world. He was offered a high ranking position at the Mayo Clinic and turned it down. They mainly specialize in burn victims and accident victims, also performed many cleft palate surgeries for poor children. There are great surgeons but also horrible, unscrupulous ones. Truly heartbreaking. RIP!

As a nursing student, I was required to witness several operations (this was in the States--Kansas City, Missouri). The absolute scariest for me was a liposuction procedure. While the surgeon was working on the abdomen, the heart rhythm went wild each time the cannula was inserted. It is Not a natural procedure. It is Not something anyone should be doing to their body. If I had a friend that was even thinking about having this done, I would tell them to think again. The risks are too high to do something so unnatural for fashion/trends. Love the body you have. You'll only have it for a short time. It is like any transportation vehicle really. Why would I want to "pimp my ride?" I can't take my body with me, after all. Be happy. Be healthy. Love yourself and others for Who They Are Inside. Please. Please. Don't do this to yourself or your loved ones.

As an old ER nurse, in my experience ( remember I mostly saw complications secondary to botched procedures or sepsis ( OMG THE SCARRING from MRSA is hideous )….Liposuction rarely helps in an aesthetically pleasing way… uneven ridges & bumps between cannula insertions… rarely can a post op display her new six pack in the raw … dreams of string bikinis replaced with heavy duty full coverage spandex to flatted out the unsightly mess left by liposuction…. So not only is it life threatening, it’s unsightly … any further weight gain will exacerbate the ridges because the fat deposits accumulate in the remaining adipose tissue Shock, DIC, sepsis, hemorrhage, thrombosis, local infection + potentially POOR OUTCOME = NOT WORTH THE RISKS! If you do opt for cosmetics procedures, ( I’m not opposed & have partaken myself ), be sure to see a BOARD CERTIFIED Plastic Surgeon or Dermatologist for anything surface ( fillers, lasers, etc ).

It's heartbreaking how careless this surgeon was! The woman was literally struggling to breathe but all he did was giving her meds against anxiety. When I had surgery, my surgeon went to speak to my mother and showed her the results right after the procedure. He told her what he did in detail. When I woke up from the anesthesia, I was given everything I needed and nurses kept an eye on me in case I had pain. A day later, I was discharged. The surgeon came to see me at night and kept in touch with me. Things really went perfectly and I'm thankful. I am soon turning 2 months after the surgery and the surgeon keeps asking me if I'm doing well. He restored my faith in doctors.

Such clothes normalize impurity and immodesty and drive the girls them toward vain and perverted desires to look more impure. When they were children, their family and friends all dressed in a sensual way, and no body efficiently though them about virtues of virginity, purity, modesty. To be the most beautiful woman in the world, try to become more like the Virgin Mary, Mother of Christ, and dress for God, not for boys, not for the world, and not for vain ambition, but dress to be a dignified temple of the Holy Spirit, not a temple of sin, vanity and impurity.

Such an ignorant thing to say! First and foremost It's NOT cheap in neither Mexico or Thailand, it's may be less expensive but NOT cheap! Reason why it may cost less is because the currency in both countries is at a lower value than USA, Europe, Australia. You cannot discredit the many amazing surgeon's in Mexico just because you are uneducated in the subject. Bad surgeries and cosmetic fatalities happen in literally every country not just Mexico or Thailand. Also, the price of a plastic surgeon doesn't necessarily reflect their abilities or guarantees better results. Somethings may cost more but it doesn't make it better, just more expensive! Many Doctor's have caught on to that mentality that many people have " expensive Doctor= Great results " and start charging crazy amounts right off the bat because they will obviously be seen as prestigious plastic surgeons. Don't spread FALSE information!

Also prior to surgery you sign over 10 papers saying that they are not responsible nor liable if anything were to happen & that you were aware of the risks. I'm a retired nurse and have had people call me on the phone stating that they'd had cosmetic surgery in Mexico. Now they needed someone in the states to assume their medical care. No doctor or nurse will risk their license by removing sutures or staples on these patients. They're at the mercy of foreign doctors. And it's very difficult holding these doctors accountable if something goes wrong.

Beautiful women are actually the MOST insecure! Being reminded of your beauty your entire life forces you to want to keep up with it, perfect it, & even go beyond it to reach “flawless”. They are also always in competition with other beautiful women & desire to be seen as the most beautiful... This is also why we see the most beautiful women stuck in toxic and domestic relationships, extreme insecurity and codependency.....

@@darkcontinentschild2962 Just to give you an idea... I live in the desert, it's hot here. It is pretty much the same as Phoenix, AZ. I do NOT skimp on A/C, I leave it on 24/7 due to my dogs. I keep my house cool in the summer. My electricity bill runs around 40-70 USD per month in the summer and about 10 USD in the winter. Tap water is $5 USD, drinking water is 6 USD to fill my 70 gallon drinking water tank. Propane for hot water is about $50 every 2 years. Usually that is much higher but I don't cook, that really is just for hot water. Vet visits for my dogs... I just had a very sick beagle and for a biopsy, full bloodwork panel, exam, surgery to remove a thing from her eye,... it was $100 USD. Neuter for my Schnauzer was $35.00. The pharmacies here (big pharmacies) have a doctor on site with a single exam room and a waiting room that would seat about 4 people... it's about $3 to see a doctor. You don't go to them for heart attacks, you would go to a hospital. But for bladder infections, colds, school physicals, etc., it's $3 to $5, usually closer to $3 USD. The doctors are often times women who stopped practicing medicine to raise their kids, so they work in these clinics for a few hours weekly to stay in the game. New medical school graduates also tend to work in these clinics for the extra cash. I have not used them often since my friends and previous employers are doctors here but the times I have used them or my friends, we have all had fantastic medical care. I certainly have no complaints. My city is huge, massive. It's well over a million people. If I want to take a taxi from one side of the city to the other, it's about $12 during rush hour traffic. Taco stands... a huge taco that honestly, I can only eat one but guys might be able to eat 3, perhaps, are usually about 1 or 2 USD each. A housekeeper for the entire day (including meal prep) is about $10 USD, I pay double that, I pay $20/day. They work hard and deserve the money. Minimum wage here is about $7 USD per DAY! The pizza delivery guys know me well. If I order a pizza a college kid comes out here in the hot desert sun on a motorcycle so I tip well, usually 30%. If the pizza is $10 and I give them 3 USD, that is huge here. $7 daily is minimum wage, I tip $3... they remember. I happen to get fantastic service. ;o) I love Mexico. I love the culture, the people, and the prices. ;o)

Society can throw shi* at you. You need to take whats good for u and ignore the rest. Why do you think that 52 year old lady opted for such a surgery? Its not society, but we are selves are to be blamed. Our desires put us in troubles most of the time.

I’ve read conflicting information. Some of it says he is no longer a doctor. Other information suggests he is still practicing. Is it possible that his name is a common one, and it’s a different surgeon people are finding online?

First: Thank God you paid attention to your intuition 🙏 & left before this incompetent, careless, so-called, surgeon, lay hands on you..I bet these other unfortunate women had some form of apprehension, & gut feeling something wasn't right but, pushed their own intuitive voices aside & trusted this reckless man..He needs too be stopped from performing any procedures on women! I'm sure some women went to this man without knowing his history, of course that's not a good decision! God bless this sister for working so hard to prevent other women from dying at the hands of this maniac, & may God reward her with comfort & peace from the never-ending grief from losing a sister!!!!

I really hope people spread the word about him because I know that "justice" in Mexico is corrupt and they're not gonna stop his practice. People need to know that this man is a murderer.

It's NOT the doctors that are the problem, it's the immodest attire of girls in their youth.
