It's really a good CPU for these reasons: 1. Older games. Because they use 1 thread. 2. Emulators. It's one of the best price/performance options for emulatots like CEMU, Dolphin, pcsx2 and older. Of course you can find better CPU for that but the price would double. 3. It doesn't suck in modern games, for its price at least. 4/8 cpus are not dead despite what some youtubers say.

I really love how far the smaller independent motherboard makers have come. They aren't perfect, but they seem really functional. I paired this base with a 240 GB m.2 SSD and RX 570 8GB. The base of the PC cost me less than the price of a Ryzen 5 2600 at the time (the cheapest price I could find was from Amazon!). No issues whatsoever for the 6-7 he has the machine. Other that hibernation not exactly working, no other issues whatsoever.

So basically this is a i7 2600k with no iGpu, more cache and quad channel memory support. But way cheaper. Its not that bad and for 5 dollar more you can get the v2 version ( Ivy Bridge based. So 22nm, less power consumption and a little better IPC ). Sure, for 60 dollars you can pick the E5-1650 with six cores but its double the price and for a really tight budget 30 dollars are a big thing. And, to be honest, I'd rather spend more on a motherboard with quad-channel memory support. Anyway great video as always! :)

Ivy Bridge BEAST: E5-1680V2 Bought this one recently and thought I had a real deal at $155. Now, $145! (plus shipping ex USA). Not a bad deal for an 8C/16T CPU with OC'íng at or above 4.5 Ghz. This is the pinnacle of Ivy Bridge. Just thought I would pass on the link. Running mine with ASUS P9X79Pro, which I bought over 6 months ago (for $20 locally...an even better deal, I admit). TechYesCity did a 3-part benchmark series on this CPU vs 2700x and 9900K; it did not disappoint. Not bad for an almost 7 year old CPU. Of course, this will require some hefty cooling. I went with a PCcooler GI-D66A off of AliExpress for $70+ shipping (12V, 4 pin PWM version). Had to reverse the shrouded fans to get the LED top plate oriented correctly; not difficult. This CPU cooler seems to perform very well versus top name brand big box air coolers. Very happy with that purchase, too. www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Xeon-E5-1680V2-SR1MJ-3-00-Ghz-8-Core-Processor-OEM/114154573061?epid=1539976682&hash=item1a94248d05:g:XOIAAOSwwoledH1L

Most important, you get lower power consumption on newer systems. But... Even for this build, I would try to get Ivy Bridge, that has lower PC because of 22nm process. This CPU has 130W TDP. Try to compare it to e3-1230v2 also for 40$. You cannot overclock it, but performance will be similiar to 4 Ghz Sandy Bridge, so you will lose only about 5% performance, but power consumption will be much lower. Ivy Bridge 4C/8T Xeons are only 69W TDP. With 3.7 Ghz, but on one step better generation, the performance is about the same, as on 4Ghz Sandy Bridge. So I don't recommend LGA2011 Sandy Bridge build, instead go socket 1155 with Ivy Bridge Xeons. Just look at that huge differance in power consumption when you compare it to Xeon e3-1230v2. www.servethehome.com/intel-xeon-e5-1620-sandy-bridge-ep-xeon-review-4c8t-36ghz/intel-xeon-e5-1620-power-consumption/ (not to mention, that Ivy bridge chipsets has already USB 3.0, so you don't have to pay extra for add-in card, that takes up one slot). You get performance similiar to i7-3770 by this (which is equivalent of e3-1240v2 xeon, but I think to pay 5-6$ extra for +100 mhz is not worth it, so it's better to take 1230v2 with 3.7Ghz turbo) As this system can draw 20-40$ more per year on electricity, than Ivy bridge e3-1230v2, (depends on how often you play or use CPU on 70-100% daily), I don't recommend this build as budget option. If you use it just 3 years, it will burn up to 100$ more on power. Just put more money on newer platform, it will return on power consumption.

You can see differance in performance between e5-1620 and e3-1230v2 here: cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Xeon-E3-1240-V2-vs-Intel-Xeon-E5-1620-0/m5484vsm2930 As you can see, both 1230v2 is about 2-3% faster in stock clocks, after overclock, 1620 will be like 3% faster. It's not worth it, because of 69W vs 130W TDP.

If you are looking for a video idea, I always wondered about using a Sandy Bridge/Ivy Bridge based system for Windows 98. I have a few PCI graphics cards: Savage 4, TNT2 M64, FX 5500 and some PCI sound cards: Vortex2, Audigy2, SB Live, Solo-1. I was always curious to see if it would work without proper motherboard drivers to run retro games. I've noticed, unfortunately, a lot of the socket 370 boards I attempt to use from the closet end up becoming unstable after a couple weeks, likely due to bad caps. I imagine if there were more modern alternatives it could keep 9x retro going even longer. Recapping all those boards is a job for this summer when I can open the windows. :)

While I'm building basically one with the same specs as Phil's would be a good time to try it with those older OSs. Win98 ran fine when I tried it on a random quadcore; how different is the i7/xeon instruction set?

It was either the Q8300 (core2quad, started life as a Dell) or the E5300 (core2duo, Asus board). Already installed, on some random HD while testing something else. This was probably before I upgraded RAM to 8GB on both; it's been a while. I'll have to try it again, since one of the Asus P5B boards got retired (design flaw in Southbridge wiring kills the capacitors that handle USB) and that would be a good job for it. Hmm. Didn't exhibit the fall-over-if-over-512mb RAM bug, apparently (which seems to actually be hardware triggering Windows, not Win98 per se -- I had 1GB in my old Win98 box, but 4 RAM slots made a difference back then). I've always regretted what I didn't hoard... sooner or later something pops up demanding exactly that part you didn't keep!

Found a Lenovo Thinkstation board (probably made by Tyan) with some nice features like SAS ports, extra slots, and big RAM support; I doubt that board will overclock but it's still plenty fast. Won't be a gaming box but should work very well to upgrade the last of my everyday quad-cores (mostly it's the fileserver but also does heavy graphics editing, and could use more horsepower). XP/XP64 support was a big plus! Am using a very similar HSF (labeled for HP) on both -- and the i7 reports an idle temp around 25C !! Goes to show that bigger and fancier ain't always better.

This and other CPUs you are presenting are often quite old and if the heatspreader is not soldered you have to change the paste at some point. I do repair old consoles in my freetime as a hobby and they need this procedure everytime because just changing the paste on top won`t help with the consoles overheating issues much. And a TCSunbow X3 480GB SSD (optionally add a HDD or go up to 1TB for ~£35 more) Total price approx. £400/$500/€450. The main problem with the build is how expensive SFX PSUs are, but you don't have many other good options for something that's this portable, at least not for a PC with a discrete graphics card. An mATX build could have a cheaper case and PSU, but would be much more difficult to fit in a bag (the SG05 wouldn't be very easy to fit in small bags due to its height, but much easier than an mATX case, and I think the SG05 is a good compromise of size and cooling, as it can fit a full-size dual-slot graphics card and even some small CPU tower coolers)

Majority of tech industry capital value is now in the secondary open market broker channel not the AMD, Intel primary market on the mass laundering of v2/v3/v4 components by Intel DCG bundled freebie into sales package as close incentive; all 1.5 trillion of them. v1, v2, then too bad v3+ can't OC on voltage regulation. Intel really destroyed hand me down value of Xeon v3+ at this generation totally locking them down. I've pressed Intel to open the PC control hub (chip set) market via license agreement for back in time Xeon in order to bring the boards to a close as current features without having to scavenge back in time or rely on a non eol part that isn't quite appropriate for use. Really like this channel. Moving secondary kit fit for use puts money into the hands of the channel so they can buy something news keeps industry innovating, pays for re-engagement of the primary x86 CPU market post Intel monopoly by industrial responsible society for democratic capitalism, moving forward. what happens if you use a dual cpu socket motherboard for 2 x 1620 then overclock to 4.2 for a total of 8cores/16 threads? will that work?

What are the known problems of using newer CPUs with older platforms? I know chipset drivers can be problematic and there are probably EFI-only platforms out there now, but the only thing I can think of CPU-wise was that AMD removed a few instructions, namely most of 3DNow!, but it hardly matters because there is no software the depends on 3DNow! and anything that supports it at all would benefit more from a generally faster CPU.

Hey Mr. Phil can you please use the "Tank Battle (CPU)" benchmark in War Thunder instead of static one since the static one only shows the performance of the GPU? Also it seems that Xeon E5-1620 drains more power on that motherboard then my i7-2600K in asus P8Z77-V LX mobo at same 4.2 GHz clock which is strange since they are virtually the same CPU.

All orders from Aliexpress are very slow, I don't know why but orders from eBay are really fast now. I got my items in 15-25 days.

I really enjoy your videos. Can you please make a video on how to assemble a modern day PC. I know I sound stupid but you really make me want to build a Xeon computer
