For the archer situation there is the official explanation (which i think was confirmed by the author in an interview at some point) and a fan interpretation (which is popular, but conflicts a bit with established lore). Essentially Archer survived Gilgamesh's bombardment in the castle and survives in spirit form for 2 days (remember archer class servants can have independent action etc). In the end it also comes full circle with being a "hero" and being the idealised form of Shirou and Archer has his moment to save everyone, so there is a bit of a poetic end there. At the time fans were also speculating whether the counter force and Archer Emiya's role as Guardian could have him be re-summoned to present day Fuyuki to save the world. For plot convenience or not, Archer coming back with the "Shirou" hair-style and chat with Rin ties up the ending of their storyline nicely with Rin's promise to make Shirou learn to love himself. It's cute and makes for a uplifting conclusion to the dramatic final battle.

You may have noticed that Shirou's chant was different from Emiya's. This is because they have different mindsets, which impacts their inner world. One part of Gilgamesh's back story is that his best friend was one of the only people who could tie with him in battle (this is how they met and became friends). That person did this by creating mud (clay) copies of Gilgamesh's weapons. That's why Gil is so furious here. Shirou not only rips off, but surpasses, Enkidu's ability.

Actually the reason why Gil "throws" his weapons is a bad habit he got from fighting Enkidu since he used his mud to create projectile weapons. And no, UBW is not superior to Gate of Babylon, it is simply than once you are inside UBW all weapons are already there meanwhile Gil has to pull them out of his treasury making him slower than Shirou. Still wouldnt have been enough if it werent for Gil holding back a lot using only weapons that Shirou could be able to copy to show the Faker the difference with the real deal, instead of using his armor or utility NPs that could have allowed Gil to win easily You can see that when he pulls EA, not only is clearly frustrated (seems like "Try to copy THIS, mongrel" kind of though) but also that even on that situation he hesitates for a moment to pick it because of his pride. Add to that that is a mere mortal and you can understand why Gil never got serious until it was too late for him and despite all of that it was Archer who finished the job

@@masterblaster5186 I didn't mean to imply that Shirou was superior to Gilgamesh, only that he got further than Enkidu did that first time (in regards to the gap that had to be crossed). The reason for that doesn't matter (for this point; it is still good to know in general), only that this is the gravest insult in Gil's mind.

did you notice that at 8:45 gil wanted to draw ea, but then hesitate to do because he considers emiya not worthy enough, but then draws it anyway because his life is worth more than his pride. But in the end it was already to late because shirou didn´t hesitate and gil loses not because of a lack of power, but to his pride. I think that is the best way to end this fight, since its not some plot armor bullshit but a great exemple of his character issues.

@@Kuro_Neko420 That's because it's a Gilgamesh from a later point of his life, this is from the end of Epic of Gilgamesh where he has learnt his mistakes and becomes a better person, he's wiser and more knowledgeable which is why he fit into the Caster class. His Archer self of FSN is the younger version at the beginning of the tale of Epic of Gilgamesh, where he's arrogant and always belittles and underestimates his enemies. TL;DR Babylonia Gilgamesh and FSN Gilgamesh are different

Alright explanation time: let me just say it now Shirou is not powerful than gilgamesh if you're wondering, just like he said against other servants he will still lost, but since His reality marble is said to be the perfect counter to Gilgamesh Gate of Babylon, that's why he was able to keep up with him, now let me say this UBW is counter only to Gil's Gate of Babylon, which means that if Gil would chose to he can destroy UBW using EA but chooses not because his prideful and arrogant. Also for archer its said that he ears or drinks the blood of nearby animals so he can stay alive and decide to just dematerialize in order to not get killed

Even though I'm a big Gilgamesh fan, I actually like his defeat there, because it's totally circumstancial. Gilgamesh loses against Shirou because A) this particular incarnation of him simply has better-than-average fighting skills so Shirou can match him, B) he's too arrogant to simply unleash his full power on the spot, C) he still hesitates a split second before resorting to using Ea, wich would grant him instant victory and D), because Shirou has the ONE power that acts as a perfect counter to Gate of Babylon. His defeat is justifiable because it's not like other works where the protagonist suddenly becomes OP because plot/power of friendship/power of love, it's all about circumstances and it makes it believable that he would lose in these specific circumstances.

What's more is that he's not even moves from his position and before casting UBW barely shoting swords at him whitch allows Shirou to become better at using Archer's power,and even seeing EA gives him a huge advantage becuase he now knows he should not allow him to use this thing........whatever Gill wants to admit it or but the element of surprise was a huge factor for his wins (not that he can't win without them but still) i believe he would be much less arrogant if his enemies would know about his abilities he would need to use tacticks in a fight too. Anyway this method of victory against him might not be the best,but it's the best presented to us today i believe.....becuase it's the consistant with his character unlike in my opinion the way he lost against Saber whitch kinda ruins the consept of him being the strongest heroic spirit on this war,and Sakura is......basically Nasu understand that Gilgamesh is kinda too much for Heavens Feel (tho Sakura are basically the one kills all the antagonists exept Argra himself)

No, it works on all target. It's just that it was specifically designed to bind divine beings, so extra effective against those with divinity. Chains of Heaven's also gets stronger against stronger enemies, as it's powered/supported by Alaya/Counter Force.

He just saw the memories of the time Archer died which is when he tells himself not to feel pity. They never actually state he got any stronger EDIT: Checked Answer and read the scene again and he did get all the memories and feelings, my b. No mention of Shirou getting stronger though, just skills and memories.

Archer didn't really die on that moments, he just faked his death for this moment. hope it helps

​@@Preto_da_Terra No he did not get summoned as a counter guardian, he did not dissapeared to begin with. Counter guardians purpose are last line of defense to make sure human race survive. If Archer did not showed up here with Rin's command seal Saber would have destroyed the grail even if it means taking down Rin with it.

Fun fact, throughout that fight, Gilgamesh never moved from his spot until he got disarmed that is why he said what he said and took a step back when Shirou went in for a final slash

Studio Deens despite how terrible they are, they might have depicted the fight more accurately but Ufotable took it up a level and did a more character accurate depiction and Gilgamesh never moved a single step, not until the end, which really suits his character and shows the difference

Shirou played all his cards perfectly. He used UBW to counter GoB barrage, constantly taunted Gil to keep him triggered (by his own existence too), and not letting him thinking clearly, and got upper hand in close combat by using history of used weapon combined with Archers expertise and buffing himself with magic to cover gap in physical strength.

I mean ALL Archers has this skill,because it's a class skill after all it's just varies in rank(EMIYA's rank is B whitch allows him to stay in this world for 2 days without master as long as he has magical energy and Gilgameshes is A+ whitch allows him to act without master at all) but that doesn't mean only archers has this skill (for example Rider has C rank whitch allows her to stay for 1 day without a master) so this skill isn't rare at all......

archer still alive because the class skill called "Independent Action" (almost every archer have this skill) which mean they can remain independent even when rejecting the Magical Energy supply from one's Master. Many things they dont explain like parameter, class skill, personal skill, noble phantasm.

Due to it he could exist as a physical person without the need of a master for a long time. However for Noble Phantasms he would require external mana. That's why kotomine had the bodies in the church basement. Emiya however has the skill at B rank. In normal logic that would mean that after sustaining fatal wounds from Gilgamesh, he should have disappeared. Rin even lost the command spells. However he had plot armor on his side and that helped him survive till he shot Gilgamesh. No other reason. Just pure writing stupidity.

@@skychieftain about the part where he got stab by gil, there is a discussion that say he did get killed during that time, but as his role as humanity guardian, the world either resummon him or preserve him long enough for him to fulfill his role as the guardian... Though this is just a theory😆, so there is a lot to debate on this

Thats both wrong and right. Yes he can only use stuff hes seen, not everything archer had. But at the same time Shirou has seen quite a few of Archers memories from being close to him and he can also use anything he's seen in memories. Plus he's been in Archers unlimited blade works and can use any sword he's seen inside there. So he does have quite a few of Archer's weapons.

it made me tear up when i first watched the archer scene at the end. When his hair is like shiros and he changes from calling her Rin like archer... and calls her Tohsaka like shirou does.

In the VN, Archer’s death was a lot less clear cut with rubble collapsing onto him after Gilgamesh’s barrage so him coming back was plausible. In the Anime, they were a lot more subtle, and decided to depict Archer disappearing with the particle effects used to show a servant going invisible, which tbh is pretty hard to catch and only something I realized after a few observant viewers pointed it out

I dont know how many people know this, but I was only informed of it recently, the theme in that battle that is going in the background is the theme of his father Kiritsugu Emiya from the game rather than Emiya Shiro's

Basically, acher just went invisible after getting shot at by Gills swords, which made an illusion of death.

There's an extra episode called Sunny Day. Its an alternate ending for UBW.

For the final episode, make sure you watch the post credits! There is also an alternate ending on the blu ray that shows the "good" visual novel ending of this route

Just a reminder that from 17 to probably his thirties, Shirou grew 20 centimeters. Reinforcement is one hell of a drug.

Why archer was there even if he hadn’t a master anymore? Answer: in the visual novel there is a part in menu called “status” in which you can see abilities and noble phantasm of every servant, archer has a skill called “independent action B” (B is the rank of the skill that are ranked from A to E), thanks to this skill the servant can survive more than other servants without a master. Sorry for my bad English though.

I'm just glad I happened to see this. That localization of the Incantation is so much better than the original one. Sometimes localization can strip away a lot of subtlety. I went and looked up the literal translation of the Japanese after and it's so much better.

Gilgamesh is the strongest servant in the Fate series (Only if you exclude FGO) and the author said he would've single handedly won any holy grail war if he wanted too and is essentially the servant killer for his overwhelming power so it's fitting that in nearly every route he's defeated in he's beaten by someome who's not a servant

That Rho Aias wasn't casted by Shirou. Archer (the Emiya one) works different than other servants because of the pact with counter force. Anyway lore in Fate is really deep and complicated but long story short, Archer keeps his memories unlike other servants. Gilgamesh "killed" Archer (summoned for the grail war) but he came back with the power of counter force. He helped Shirou beat Gilgamesh and saved Rin.

The counter force didn’t do anything here. The Archer EMIYA here is the same one that Rin summoned. Gilgamesh’s attack from earlier critically damaged EMIYA’s core, which is fatal, but EMIYA went into spirit form to conserve mana and with the help of Independent Action, he was able to survive until the end to help Rin and Shirou.

Yes the Rho Aias was Archer but if the Counter Force summoned him he would have zero autonomy, including the ability to speak. He wouldn't make moral decisions like choosing to save Shirou or Shinji. Since the most direct and practical tactic would be to kill the vessel and any other Master in the vicinity, the Counter Force would have him do that. He most likely faked his death at the Einzbern mansion and waited for the right moment to make his cool entrance.

Archer reappeared either of the two reasons here: 1.) He survived Gilgamesh's attack, stayed hidden after that. 2.) He reappeared as the Guardian (not as a Servant) that made a pact with the Counter force.

When archer talk about his past on episode 19, he said that he was making a contract with The World. He was sent to many different timeline to protect humanity. So the one that appears on this episode is not archer as a servant for holy grail war, but as a counter guardian. He was sent because what gilgamesh is trying to do threatens mankind.

well i read a comment before at a site that Archer wasnt actually killed by Gilgamesh but rather Archer went into his spiritual form at that timing and he kept himself alive through the small mana that he have and used it at the end well i need clarification for this though

archer is part of gaia's counter force, so he can basiclly just be messing arround as he wishes, and gilgamesh did haste when figting shiro, thats the reason he died

In the novel, the reason Rin wants to make another pact with Archer and she cries when she says "But... that means" is because Archer won't keep his memories of this Grail War when he leaves. In the novel she (and I think Saber) knows that he'll go back to being a Guardian and will not remember what happened there and how by the end he accepted himself again, so he will just go back to the future hating himself again and wanting to end his own existence as someone who is doomed to just cleans up for humanity for eternity and will never achieve his own salvation. About Fate, it was originally a visual novel where the player could make choices and alter the events. Hence, it has 3 different routes and major endings based on those choices. On anime, it spawned 3 different versions, Stay Night, the 2006 show with Saber being the focus, Unlimited Blade Works, popularly known as the "Rin route" on the novel, and finally, there's Heaven's Feel, the "Sakura Route". Heaven's Feel was made into a movie with 3 parts, and it ties up a lot of things that weren't answered or shown previously. Like, what Zouken (the guy that controls insects) and Sakura were up to in these 10 years and they have a major participation this time. Sasaki Kojirou wasn't the true Assassin, but a familiar summoned by Medea, but on Heaven's Feel the True Assassin shows up. Also, Kirei is a major character like in Zero. More importantly, Rider also becomes one of the main stars, after getting so quickly shafted in both Stay Night and Unlimited Blade Works. So please, finish the last missing links with Heaven's Feel! Don't wait too long or you might forget important stuff!

The what if scenario of "what if shirou didn't cut off Gil's arm and let him cast Ea" happened in the Prisma verse where I think the most powerful non-servant Shirou fought Gil(♀️) with charged Ea

Man, i love how even though Gilgamesh is one of the most overpowered characters in this series, he gets countered by Shiro who's not even all that strong, lmaoo

Chains of Heaven doesnt work on human, it will be a normal chains on human.. but when it used to God or Demigod being or any Divinity, its super effective, also explain why it works so well against Heracles/Berserker

archer is a guardian he can still interfere in the grail war

The chains you were talking about is called "Enkidu" and theres a reason why he doesnt use it in the fight with Shirou. It only works and can only chain entities that has some divine essence, Gilgamesh used those chains because Berserker has a divine essence thats why it worked on him, the stronger a person's divinity the stronger the chain restrains them, but Shirou is just a mere human, he obviously doesn't have a drop of divinity in him, so Shirou is immune to the chains. Also the one he used to catch shirou when gil was getting sucked is just a regular golden chain Also the reason Archer "lived" through the end is because of his existence as A Counter-Guardian, he was able to intervene and help Archer give help to Shirou and the gang one last time.

Chains was created against divine creatures, but they can be used on anyone. And no, Archer simply faked his own death before. As CG he`d killed everyone in the area.

Do you really think golden chains from a king wouldn’t be able to restrain a little boy? They were clearly working when he was pulling shirou into the portal. Then archer shot him.

He can appear again and again because he is the guardian not ordinary servant like others. Araya(Earth) can summon him for cleanse anything against humanity survive such as disaster, war, epidemic etc. by anytime(past, present and future).

Archer class servants have the Independent Action Class Skill which allows them to function without a Master for a set period of time. Beyond that, you guys know enough about Emiya Shirou by now to know that he doesn’t know when to give up. Combine the 2 days of time that Independent Action: Rank B grants him with the determination of the man who unironically pursued the ideal of being a superhero to the grave and beyond and you have your explanation as to why Archer is still lurking around to the bitter end. Besides, Thosaka needed him. He could hardly leave just yet, could he? She’d be mad at him. So when you saw him fade away in the caste, he just went into spirit form to conserve as much mana as possible. Enough to do what he does here in the final fight.

Let's go final!

I'll try to explain the fight. Fate is based (was based) on a compatibility system, I mean. The game of rock, paper and scissors. UBW is a natural counter to GoB as it fires its projectiles much faster than GoB. With this, shirou already had an advantage. His 2nd advantage was projection, Shirou could copy the weapons that Gilgamesh would throw, with this Shirou would counter what Gilgamesh would throw from his GoB. The projection also allows to copy the skills and parameters of the user of the copied weapon, when you see Heavens Feel you will understand what I mean. Shirou's 3rd advantage was the constant contact with Archer, it's called Spiritual Evocation. Shirou gained experience and certain memories from Archer. And the last advantage of him, the arrogance of Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh didn't take Shirou seriously at first allowing Shirou to cast UBW. When Gilgamesh is into UBW he can no longer win in any way. In the VN the fight is very well explained, Shirou was subduing Gilgamesh with melee while UBW was being used in the background countering Gob. Gilgamesh is mediocre in melee and Shirou had the advantage that UBW allows him to copy the abilities of the wielders of the copied weapons. Gilgamesh tried to pull Ea out without hesitation but Shirou cut off his arm, Gilgamesh running away from Shirou tried to grab Ea again but Shirou was already reaching for him. In the end, the grail finished saving Gilgamesh. Ufotable didn't adapt the fight very well and made Gilgamesh look less pitiful making him "hesitate" to bring out Ea. And also that Ufotable made the grail save Shirou from Gilgamesh.

He did hesitate though in the anime, but if Gilgamesh fought better in the vn. I guess the studio made him slightly weaker to get him killed off, i think Caster Gilgamesh would fight way better. Also Proto Gilgamesh is a better melee fighter and almost killed Proto Saber, one that is stronger than Dark Saber. Meaning Proto Gilgamesh can kill Dark Saber and other servants.

@@dantes4780 Then Archer`d killed everyone in that area and he clearly wouldn`t talk to Rin in the end. Guardians at missions are just machines, mission only. And there are several characters even not among Heroic Spirits that can take down Servant if it`ll be needed.

u guys should watch Fate Grand Order Babylonia, it may be a whole different story and timeline but you will like it!!

You should check out Fate Stay Night UBW ova sunny side up I think that was what it was called. It is a alternate ending where Saber lives after nuking the grail

Shiro has the most broken skill ever: Plot armor

Lol 8:04 "No nothing" that's because he's an archer who's only suppose to use his bows and arrows that being the gate of babylon and it's weapons. Only reason Archer Emiya can use swords in hand to hand like he does is because he's not a proper servant but a counter guardian

Archer said it himself,he can stay some days without mana plus he killed some animals to sustain mana

I don't remember anyone saying he killed animals to stay alive, anime or VN. what's the source on the animal part? It's definitely not in the VN since I just played through ubw myself.

@@BradleyMcCloud animal is the safest theory. Archer needed mana and he won't kill humans nor does he have anyone to mana transfer with so it is safe to assume that he got some amount of mana through animals. Moreover he was present in the forest,wasn't he?

@@BradleyMcCloud not the animals, but spirits in forest near castle. But then again, it was stated on interview with author, IIRC. But in general, he faked his own death and was able to hold till the end because of Independence Action skill of Archer class Servants.

my favorite explanation is that Archer did die when Gilgamesh attacked him in the castle and his life as a servant ended but as guardian of the world he was present to protect humanity as his contract with Gaia dictated

Answers: Archer leaves faking his death and uses his last energy in that scene. The reason Shiro can't copy that EA is because that weapon is actually the history of Gilgamesh as the first hero. So the weapon that makes that power attack is not a weapon. Extra: The reason Gilgamesh did not get EA and has that hand almost give up moment, was because he should only use EA on those he dim worst it.

Shirou can`t trace weapons that are not from Earth. Ea simply existed before it was established. Probably first "sword" in existence.

Gilgamesh doesn't use chains, because they are only effective on gods and demigods and get really weak against 100% mortals.
