Unleashing The Power: Excess 14 Competitive Catamaran, Unbeatable Price!

Is the Excess 14 going to be a competitor to the Nautitec 44 open? or are they blazing forward with a catamaran that has loads of volume boasts good cruising speeds and is at an affordable price for a catamaran in this size range? I will admit to taking a shine to the Excess 14.

I have helped deliver a few Excess catamarans and I generally think they are great. The mainsail being low slung is very powerful and we had the 11 doing 14 knots across the channel in comfort. There are a couple of issues that I think need addressing 1) safety redundancy is lacking behind the helm seats. Those backrests will eventually fail and there is no secondary safety line to stop you falling backwards over the sugar scoop. 2) The davits are too low to hold a dinghy in anything other than benign conditions. Other than that, no matter how relatively affordable the Excess range is, I still think it is a big ask to expect anyone who can afford to spend this amount of money on a boat to be happy with the very cheapest of plastic shower hoses that look and feel like they belong in a budget caravan. The interior in my opinion feels cheap and I guess it comes down to whether someone who can afford to spend several hundred thousand Euros on a boat will also be happy living with “cheap” quality fittings.

I love the layout of the excess 11, but I agree on the cheap feeling. If only it was built better without saildrives.

Perfectly agree with the points you mentioned. They sail well, don't they? The hull deign left me with this impression. Thanks!

It is good to hear from someone who has actually sailed one of these. I would be interested in some stats on how they point to wind or, run-down wind etc. I know what you mean about the dingy davits I was a little surprised at how low they were but maybe they will change that in the future to something more practical.

@@SVTONICBoatWives all my trips were assisting with deliveries from Les Sables/La Rochelle to U.K. Like all production cats they don’t like beating and they shake and bounce in a moderate sea. From about 20/25 degrees forward of a beam reach in a decent breeze they start to really move. The most impressive thing to me was the power in the mainsail. On the day of the Fastnet race we were absolutely flying across the channel, faster than I have ever been in any other sailing boat and that was in an Excess 11! It was quite the experience sailing downwind into the Solent as the racing boats were tacking out.

I really like the flexibility of the extra space in the master cabin. If you have smaller children, you might not want them across the boat in the other hull...

A very interesting cat! I was impressed with the visibility on the cockpit since many put cabinets that prevent you from seeing around. On the other hand, so many glass area might turn the cabin into an oven so black out curtains would be a must - for me. I'd use the roof real state for solar since, as I'm quite "Snow White" I'm not into burning under the sun :) I like the hull height, so there's not much water into the face. The bridges are quite exposed (love Gunboats internal helm) but since there's one on each hull, one can try to escape from the Sun. From the promo scenes at the beginning it seems to sail nicely. The low boom is something that contributes for its balance, I believe. Some cats have it on the third floor, almost, this must have a price on the hull... For a couple, a self tacking jib would be nice. From the internal finishings I'd say it's probably on a nice price x value combination. The nav station solutio is very clever. I missed space for a repeater/plotter but since you can place an iPad and use a notebook, that'll do. Engine room space is also good. BUT what I found a bit strange - don't know if it's become "normal" nowadays, was the exposed sandwiched balsa and infused foam floor on the port front locker/"skipper's cabin". It looked like one of the sandwich slices was missing :) Maybe it wasn't totally finished, I don't know. Must confess it left me with an "El cheapo" feeling, you know? Except for that, a very interesting boat that looks like it sails well and, with a better finish might gain some of Lagoon's consumers. Thanks for another nice "boat showing"! See you on the next! Fair winds!

Thanks for the nice video review most people tend to skip through to the bits they want to see. The finish in the skipper cabin/locker is a money-saving thing for the owner believe it or not on a lot of these production boats you pay extra for paint/gel coat finish on the inside.

Very nice tour again, well done. I like the approach of modular options such as the workshop, which if you have the room for one can be invaluable. If into Catamarans looks possible to get it fairly easily into exactly what the buyer wants, though there is something niggling me that I can’t exactly put my finger on, such that I think the tour of that 40 footer Cat that really surprised me- sorry I forget the name as you know me, I’m all about Monohulls. I think it’s along the lines of lots of vulnerable things about the place on deck to trip over, but lots of good interior stuff in good places for handholds probably more than compensates. I like the lower boom as well, and expect if ordering one, the niggling thing I couldn’t quite put my finger on, could be got to the bottom of and sorted out. Still, as Catamarans really do hate me, I don’t suppose I’ll ever get to the bottom of that. 🤣🤣🤣 Best Wishes, Fair Winds, and Safe Travels. Bob.🤔🌟🌟🌟⛵️❤️

I hope you don't have nightmares about catamarans Bob because I have two more to upload, but they do get better:). I think the boat you were thinking of is the Nautiteac 40 a nice catamaran and so we have her bigger sister to look at the 44 which will be great to compare this and that side by side.

@@SVTONICBoatWives It’s only being on one that worries me tbh, and that doesn’t look likely to happen, unless dropping off some Rum to Frik and Pietru of Sailing Sisu if I ever get the chance- those two do seem to get on ok with their Leopard 45 too, so some people definitely don’t get as badly affected as I do on them which is good.Yes it was that Nautitech 40 that really made a big impression on me, and it will be really interesting to compare the 44 to it. @@SVTONICBoatWives I think to make your channel more unique and stand out from the other channels then get your child perspective in it too! Everyone has a channel comparing the specs but few have touched on things things which is family life aboard. Which boats are kid safe, kid proof and have areas and rooms they could enjoy like put up posters, store toys or have room to play. Other things like ovens that could support such pans and crockery an if the boat has better grills. Invite a non-sailing friend to see the boats and have them tell you which one would they enjoy visiting and which one would scare them away. Maybe get the perspective of a senior citizen and find out which boat feels the most safe to be on and move about. The problem I see is that most commentators glaze over these issues to repeat the basic stats. I can get the basic stats within a few minutes of watching a video. Tell me more then that s. Let me know if I am a tall person and/or have a tall friend or relative will they bump their head below. Give me headroom! Everyone has someone in their circle who needs to lose a few pounds, let us know how comfortable they can manage in the boat below and the weight capacity of the flybridge. Let me know which boat would be safe to have my pets on and be the least likely to be a chew toy! Hey and if there is inadequacies in the boat that can be fixed then there is no crime to suggest some product plugs to fix it as long as you do not compromise obligation to your viewers that you are not basing it solely on sponsorship and you are offering more than one alternative! I think your channel could really expand if you think about trying out some of these ideas. You have a unique way of speaking which I hope you increase.
