Mushrooms left out in the sun for one hour will absorb a great deal of Vitamin D that they do not have naturally. So dry any mushrooms out first then preserve however you like.

They are not absorbing vitamin D, they are synthesizing it
I did it last year after I watched your video!!! I have been harvesting and harvesting! My friend to soak the logs 24hrs after a good harvest and they will quickly grow mushrooms again. That worked!
My sister grows those, i supply the white oak limbs and she innoculates the logs and keeps them damp under plastic to hold the moisture in better, you can get a vacuum pump with a lid sealer for storing freeze dried foods in mason jars and reuse the lids many times works great.
Mushroom growing is on my wish list!!!
Nice Shiitake!! THEYRE SO BIG & GORGEOUS!!! I grow mushrooms outside too, and after I harvest them, I cut them up, or when it's lions mane, I tear them into small pieces, and THEN I set them out in the sun for a minimum of 4 hours. I do this because just like humans, mushrooms can absorb sunlight and convert it into vitamin D ! Besides humans, mushrooms are the only other things that can do that vitamin D trick! HOW COOL IS THAT!!! And WHO DOESN'T need MORE Vitamin D from food??!!! On days when I run out of daylight, or on cloudy days, (even tho people say the vitamin D can still be made on cloudy days) I set the mushroom pieces under a UV-B light so they can convert their vitamin D that way. (Btw- IF you do this MAKE SURE you NEVER, NEVER EVER !!! look into the UV-B light!! It's REALLY BAD for your eyes! Just sayin...) Then I finish the drying of the mushrooms for storage. This way, when it's time to cook them, or tincture them, they are already LOADED with extra Vitamin D !! I only WISH I could have a freeze dryer! It's just not ever going to be in my budget. (Like, literally- EVER.) But that's ok, I have a dehydrator, and I have the hot Texas sun to help dry my mushrooms & herbs! The Texas sun is even warm enough in the Winter to dry the small pieces of mushrooms quite quickly. I'm soooo looking forward to the upcoming cooler weather & growing my lions mane this Fall & Winter!!! (It's still weather in the 90's right now over here!) Growing mushrooms really give me good motivation to go see what's new out in the Winter garden! And it's funny, mushrooms even LIKE the frosts & short-term freezes we get! So when everything else is cringing from the cold, the lions mane, oysters, and shiitake I've got are all thriving! BTW Continuously consuming powdered lions mane in capsules, as well as tinctures at the same time, has REALLY helped my slight memory issues!! I do have to take it every day, otherwise the good effects fade away. But I just wanted to share with everyone that it's been an incredible herbal remedy that has been working for me for more than a year now. I don't have a diagnosis of any memory problems, or anything along those lines. But I WAS getting quite forgetful. Basically those first signs that nobody wants to have! Taking the lions mane has definitely helped! So if those first signs are happening to you, or someone you know, I highly recommend going to an herbalist, or a Naturepath, or a Functional Doctor and talk about how much your dosage of lions mane should be. I mean, it's worth a shot, right?!! And besides being fun and interesting crop to grow, they're SO EASY to grow in just a pile of woodchips, or on a grow block too! So I also highly recommend growing them!! 👍 LET'S ALL GROW MUSHROOMS!!! 🍄♥️🍄♥️🍄♥️🍄♥️🍄♥️🍄♥️🍄
Beautiful!! Congrats on a successful inoculation and harvest!
If you don’t have a freeze drier could you use a dehydrator instead? I’m amazed how big they are! 😊Kate x
You are a godsend:) I've been heaping up old wood to do this very thing👍
I'm not a huge fan of mushrooms but will eat them when cooked into something. My family loves them and my 18 year old is interested in learning how to grow mushrooms. That is something is focusing on right now.
Very nice. I used to have 50 logs, I would force flush 6 logs every week. I would have mushrooms every week from spring to fall. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Sis, your voice is so soothing, definitely made for speaking gigs like being a KZreadr 😃. Just wanted you to know that not only are your videos amazing, you have a calming nature that I love! Been watching your fire cider videos and gotta make another batch as gave my son the last sip this am 😳. Behind on keeping a stockpile. ❤ seeing you and your mom ( lost mine in 2010😢) together, so special! ❤ all y’all, Kristy in Missouri zone 6b 😃🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
For a second, I thought there were turtles on top of the logs!

You are not the only one lol.Well what do you expect when she's going on about mushrooms.
That is so incredibly smart of you guys(i mean lovely ladies).Seriously tho that great that your inventory comes from free foraging.Very clever.
I Love watching you and your mom I'm excited and happy for you, and your Whittaker mushroom
I just recently found out from another KZread channel called plant cell technology that you can grow shitake mushrooms on sawdust or cardboard!
I want to grow mushrooms on our property but I’m a little scared yet. .. soon I’m sure… we just caught our 1st swarm a few days ago… we’ve never had bees before either but so far so good. Watching your videos is an inspiration… y’all have showed me so many things that I never would have thought of … thank you so much
Those shiitake mushrooms are massive. Nom nom nom, they look delicious. Thanks mother earth and thanks for sharing kaylee ❤🧡💛💚💙💜💟
Btw....happy to say I'm a happy excited blessed owner of a FD...right now freeze drying beef liver for a friend💃💃💃🥰🥰🥰
I just got my new t-shirt this morning!! It is beautiful and the most comfortable thing I have worn in forever!!
🍄tasty & healthy!
I would give anything for a freeze dryer…..but I’m 74 and my husband is 76. I finally got him to try freeze dried bananas and strawberries. He read all the info on the package I got. I’m just not sure that if it would be a good move because of our age and his health. He has non Hodgkins Lymphoma…I’m just afraid we’re too old to get into this now. What is your opinion? I’m big on prepping but not sure that’s an expense we can justify. Love you girl! You’re such a gift to so many of us!! ❤❤❤

The expense is quite big, I agree! But if you CAN swing it, and if you're definitely a person who would continue to use it, the nutritional value you'll get from the things you dry would be worth it! I can't afford one, but golly, if I could, I would be taking advantage of it every chance I got! Meanwhile I just use a dehydrator, and the sun for drying mushrooms.

@heatherdplans37 Ohhhh My Gosh!!! That's just so awesome to hear about your parents!! I hope the mushrooms also add a decade or 2 to their time with you!!! 👍♥️🍄♥️
Now, I want to grow some Shitake mushroom s becuz they are so good. I cant believe how huge you grew them. Thanks for the encouragement ❤
Sweet sweet sweet❤❤❤
Thanks for he book recommendation. We are about to close on 4.5 acres that is mostly wooded and I found turkey tails. Can’t wait to see what else I find. I plan on inoculating shiitake, lions main, and other mushrooms. 🤗🤗
So interesting!! Especially the medicinal info
Your apothecary is beautiful 🌺 Awesome!! I love freeze drying crimini mushrooms. I watched Roots & Refuge do a huge inoculation of shrooms.

You learned me something, guess you can teach a old dog new tricks
That is awesome. I tried to grow Morel mushroom but it was a fail. In the past i have found Morels and Chicken of the Woods. I need to try again. Thank you for sharing.
You are very fortunate to have the climate for growing mushrooms. I was from CT but now in TX. Those poor thing would shrivel with the heat. But they are the tastiest :)

I'm in Central Texas, (just west of Austin) and I grow lots of different mushrooms outside, in my garden beds, all during the Fall, Winter, and even into the Spring! It's super fun!! You should give it a try! The mushrooms even LIKE the short-term freezes we get, and they grow even bigger then! It's pretty fabulous!
Congratulations on your mushrooms 🍄.
Awesome and amazing video 📹...love it 😀 ❤
Just a start, may take a few to take hold and grow a good crop. You are doing good kaylee, keep it up...

We had so many varieties of mushrooms growing in the woods this year but I don't know any of them and have not purchased any books on them. Can't wait to go on your journey with you!
Super excited💃....im going to a shitaki mushroom inoculation Sunday near me❤
Awesome 👍🏻 👍🏻
Spors, and seaMan spors too ;)
I love the flavor of mushrooms but have never been able to handle the texture. Btw, did you know that you can upgrade your freeze dryer to a 5 tray?

It looks like you have a basket full of turtles
I was wondering if the Harvest Right people ever sponsor an individual that is disabled & can't afford to buy a freeze dryer, even if it was one of their small units, I'd be thrilled. Unfortunately I have several medical lifetime health issues that have made life a little bit harder then most. & I'd be willing to get a Dr's letter stating that I have all the health issues that I do have, To top the list is Multiple Sclerosis. It never hurts to ask a Company to get some help & if you wouldn't feel right going to them & asking them to help me, I'd understand, but if that were the case if you could give me a name of someone who I could speak with about a sponsorship that would be most helpful & I'd be most Thankful.
When you say1-2 fruiting bodies a week - do you mean 1-2 whole mushrooms 2x a week or servings? If servings what size serving would that be? Please & Thank You😊
P.s. a little bigger than anticipated, but that is fine, the next time you are ready to take another order, I will get a size (maybe 2) smaller 😂
I just got my harvest right freeze dryer would love to know what leanth of times for some of the stuff u freeze dry thnks
Where did you get the cutting board and knife?
spore print one of those girls and keep it in the fregarator. micology ant that hard . you tube it but get your spore print asap
I have pylocybin seeds
Could you tincture the mushrooms?
Why you get the 5 tray replacement for your machine?
Do you put an oxygen absorber in the jars?
Also, how do you make oil of oregano

Unless you have an allergy to bee stings you should be fine. Yellow Jackets are the AHs of the bee family and as long as you aren't outside with anything they want (meat mostly) you should be fine. The rest mostly ignore you.
My SHITaki didnt take...pisses me off Kalie. Lol

I read that sometimes it takes multiple years for shiitake to "take". So maybe don't give up? Like, maybe just go soak your logs! (Hey, that sounds funny!) Or soak your woodchips, or your grow block, or whatever way you're doing it! And then just wait for the even cooler weather to set in... Pffffthhh!! 👅💦 "Go soak your log!" Sounds like something a teenager would say as a derogatory remark! ha! 🤭

Hmm, would like to know how and when you inoculated your logs.
So you do not need to freeze before you freeze dry?
