Unleashing Destruction: The Sd.Kfz 251 Wurfrahmen 40

Hi all....Welcome to my 1/35 Sd.Kfz 251/1 II Wurfrahmen 40 build from Dragon.
History:
For the German army during WW2 the Sd.Kfz.251 was seen as a real improvement for infantry mobility, and added weight to the doctrine of using motorized infantry to accompany the tanks. It was also a well-known propaganda tool in the newsreels, which led most of the Germans into thinking that the bulk of the German infantry was carried by these armoured vehicles. But the reality could not be farther from the truth. Due to its cost and slow production, these vehicles were only allocated to some Panzergrenadier platoons, almost specialized elites within the infantry, and only attached to the best-equipped Panzerdivisions. By September 1939, only the 1st Panzerdivision was partially equipped with these vehicles. By the start of the Western campaign, in May 1940, perhaps five Panzerdivisions were also partially equipped.
The famous rocket-launcher version or 251/1 II (also dubbed “ground Stuka” or ''Stuka on foot''), used massive 320 mm incendiary 280 mm HE, 300 mm HE rockets, which had the same devastating effect as a 500 kg bomb dropped by the Stuka dive bomber.
Take the journey with me to find out what the Dragon Sd.Kfz 251 Wurfrahmen 40 has to offer over other manufacturers of this vehicle type.
This build was quite challenging with many fine detailed parts.
I built the Tamiya version many years ago and it was a much simpler kit to assemble.
Overall the detail in the dragon kit is worth the extra effort it took to complete.

Thanks Colin, great to hear feedback on the video. If you get the version with the crew, be prepared to do some modification to get the sitting crew to fit. Not something I included in my video, but you can see when I add them during the assembly how much I had to grind off of each so they would fit. And once they do sit in the seats, you then find they are sitting to tall and the roof wont fit 🫡. A bit of a pain in arse. But at least its not my arse that's been ground away to nothing 😂

Many thanks in relation to the figures, I thought they looked excellent and fitted perfectly in the 251. Now I know I will have a job to do on them. Keep up the excellent work. @@afv-studio

You can’t really beat Dragon’s Sd.Kfz.251 kits. I’ve got most of them and AFV’s as well. The main difference I think is Dragon’s sometimes vague instructions which can be a bit annoying 😂 and the AFV kits come with rubber band tracks which I would replace anyway with their own brand individual link tracks that is also bloody annoying! PS. Don’t always follow the build instruction order, so just a lot of pre-planning and test dry fitting so you don’t get backed into a corner. Nice work though mate.

Thanks Mike. Yes Dragon instructions are probably some of the worst out there, so it is important to study them well before starting, and plan the way you are going to build rather than the way it might suggest. They have realised now though that modellers prefer single link tracks and are reissuing with suitable own brand links. That's something I dont often see with Tamiya and others. Tamiya will produce a new kit with link and length tracks (M18), but all their older kits will still have the rubber band. Even their M10 Achilles had rubber band so they could save by supplying it with some old M4 lower hull parts. 🥴 Dragon are like '' Lets give it new tracks, throw in a metal barrel, add some 3D printed parts and extra photo etch. Hey lets even bundle one of our figure sets into the re-box.''

Hallo.

Thank you for your comment. The steering wheel was painted but in an attempt to keep the video to around 25 minuets long this was omitted. I agree , even though it could have been repaint outside after summer 43 the inside would likely have remained grey. My main reason at the time using 7028 ,44 was to create a variation in tone between what will be the outside colour and the inside and was purely aesthetic reason. Indeed now you mention it the grey interior option would have worked very well for this purpose. These Dragon kits can be purchased for less if you buy a number of different kits on a single order from Hong Kong. This one was only £38 I do think the new reissue Dragon kits are pretty good value even at the imported price of about £60. All now have single link tracks (these were even fully articulated) Most have metal gun barrels You get a respectable amount of photo etch They are now including 3D printed parts and throwing in one of their boxed figure sets (4-5 figures) with each kit. If that is not enough the bundled infantry figures come with the Gen2 'weapon an kit' sets which are much better than the previous. You will be seeing more of them here.... So watch this space.
