"Unknown Paradise" | Forgotten Florida | 100 Mile Ultra Marathon

Спорт

As my previous race videos have shown, Florida has much more to offer than it’s beaches and “Florida Man” stories. The Forgotten Florida trail race is an experience into what a vast majority of Florida has to offer, and RD Sean “Run Bum” Blanton put together one amazing course. Highlighting the beautiful Florida trail, wide open farmlands, and jungle-like forests, the race takes runners through an incredible point-to-point journey that should be on every trail runners bucket list.
As for me, I ran this race 4 weeks after setting the course record for the Just Survive 125 mile Ultra. I was feeling up to the challenge and wanted to test myself (and also build up a Badwater resume). Unfortunately, I was battling a knee injury that prevented me from achieving my target time, but I was still able to finish with a decent time and have one hell of a good time experiencing this amazing course! Please join me once again on another 100 mile journey, I hope you enjoy it and are inspired to do something amazing.

    Thanks, watching the video back I was on the fence about including so much of me talking about it, but ultimately it was a big part of the journey so it felt disingenuous not to include. I'm back training and can't wait to heal up 100% and tackle the next race.

    This has to be one of the best ultra running channels out there. I can't believe how many races you cram in. Your fitness, mental toughness and the way you present the race on video, are on another level. Keep up the great work, as soon as the knee/ back/ feet will allow 💪👍🏻🏃‍♂️🙂

    I had experienced some pain during a previous race the month before which I thought was an LCL or patellar strain. I thought I was close to 100%, but around mile 20 or 25 I noticed a bit of discomfort and knew it'd be a rough remainder of the race. I didn't think I was doing any additional damage until around mile 80 or 90, and that's when I started to worry about doing serious damage. I was prepared to take a few months off running because I was worried a strain turned into a tear, but now 3 weeks post race I'm back to running pain free, so I think I got really lucky. To really get into detail, I think it was a tibialis anterior strain which caused my gait to change, and to put stress on my knee, which caused the LCL and petellar tendon issues. I think this was due to (a) doing so many races in so few months, and (b) racing aggressively and pushing myself to my limits so often. I'm happy this happened because I can now plan my future races more intelligently and choose which ones I want to race hard and which ones I want to race easy

    Hey man loving these videos massive well done on smashing all these ultras out! Have you ever ran distances like this in more minimalist footwear or sandals, any thoughts on that kind of footwear for these distances? Thank you love from UK

  • @FeetFirstAthletics

    @FeetFirstAthletics

    Жыл бұрын

    Funny you mention that, I am actually training in minimalistic sandals (Luna's and Earth runners) due to the injury I mentioned in this video. Long story short I went for a few small runs after this race and noticed no pain in sandals. In shoes? Knee and shin pain. Aside from some tired calves I feel great, and I think the transition to sandals is going well due to using zero drop shoes for the last 18 months and wearing minimalistic sandals pretty much every I go aside from work. I did a 12 mile run and 20 mile hike using my Luna's and they felt great, so I'm planning on running some future races in them, maybe even one at the end of March for a race I have in the Georgia mountains. I also have a few races coming up in summer where I'm definitely using them.

    Hey there. Thanks for your great video. I just signed up for the 2024 race. What would be your recommendation for weekly miles when training for a 100? I’ve been hearing between 50-75 with more focus of “time on feet” than total miles. Thanks 🙏

  • @FeetFirstAthletics

    @FeetFirstAthletics

    Жыл бұрын

    Apologies for the late response. That's exactly what I'd recommend, I usually average 60 miles per week and max out around 80. I'll usually do a 4 week training block like 60/70/55/30 with the 30 mile week being recovery. I don't do over 3 "heavy" weeks in a row because I start to notice too much fatigue and lack of performance. Sometimes I'll dven do 2 very heavy weeks following by a recovery week if I need it. The most important thing is consistency. I'd rather average 40 or 50 miles per week over the course of 3 months as opposed to averaging 70 and needing to take a week off completely every few weeks. Time on feet is also important because late during a race you're legs will be aching, and the extra time on feet from the slower runs prepares you for that. Power walking is also a huge benefit. I can power walk 14 minute miles deep into a race whereas I could only do 17-18 minute miles when I started. I suggest doing some walk run intervals of 5 minutes run/1 minute walk to get your legs prepared for the constant starting/stopping and transitioning from run to walk. The physical act of starting/stopping can actually be pretty fatiguing on your muscles. Hope that helps, please reach out with any more questions, and good luck!
