ANYONE Can Run a 100 Mile

Спорт

In this video I discuss how any runner can complete their first 100 miler, or any ultramarathon, with dedication, a good mindset, and a passion for adventure and bettering themselves. No gimmicks, no nonsense, just putting in the miles and enjoying the journey along the way.

Consistency is the #1 way you can get to the finish line of your first 100. I used to push big mile weeks but now I just balance consistent 50-60 mile weeks so I can live life too. I just finished my 10th ultra of 100 miles or longer and am the happiest I have ever been.

It's funny because I'm actually doing the opposite now just to see what it's like. I'm usually a 50 to 60 miles a week runner, but I'm upping the training volume to see if I can get some wins this year. However, lower overall volume allows me to spend more time with my family, make videos, and never be burnt out when a random race pops up and I get an itch to go run it for fun. Like you said, consistency is key

I have DNF’d my first 3 100 milers. I learned a ton from those DNFs. I will be mostly working on my mental game this year to tackle my next attempt. My running mentor always says that every ultra distance is the distance between your ears.

Im planning a 50mile race at the end of the year. By that time I will be running slightly over 2 years. For me just the mindset to wanting to achieve this is a big win on its own.

The mindset is crucial. If you're not having fun or getting satisfaction out of the process it's so tough to keep motivated. I'll sometimes drop the weekly mileage down significantly and do something else if I start feeling burnout or lack of motivation

This really resonated with me - I particularly like the consistency is more important than volume idea.

Awesome video. I’ve got my first marathon planned in August and then looking at slowly extending the mileage and excited mainly to take things off road

great approach to this type of challenges. I'm preparing for my first 100 miles run in August. I found the focus on slow runs to be of great benefit. The runs become slower but you can focus more on your stride and the surrounding. It's also liberating to focus less on speed and more on distance.

I’m a person who did distance track and cross country in high school. I didn’t run in my early 20s but fell in love with it again in my late 20s. I’m 32 now, and I do 5ks and 10ks quite often, but I’m interested in upping the mileage to half marathons then full marathons. Maybe an ultra is in my more distant future, but your video is incredibly inspiring and encouraging!! Makes me feel like anything is possible. Thank you!

0:22 SO TRUE. I'm so glad you mentioned that. I truly cannot stand every running channel that I have seen so far "pitching" all these items... with the hopes of "MAKING YOU" run faster. simply not true.

I have my first organised 50 mile in late March 2024 with a view to doing two organised 100 milers in 2025. I suspect that sometime after the 50 mile I will do a 100k self supported. I thought this video was great. It resonated a lot with me on what I think about approaching these endurance events. You just need to want to do it and put the time in. Your message cuts through a lot of the (for want of a better word) "nonsense" that you need to strictly follow approach A or plan B. Just have confidence in yourself, word hard, follow 80/20, do strength training, and get it done!

Considering doing the Tampa 100 this November for my first ultra. Currently running 3-4 times per week @ 3 to 7 miles per run. I need to implement a more structured plan. Helpful video, thanks!!

We have a local race called Steel City. Its a charity 12 hour race around a local park. You do as many loops as possible (2.5 miles each about). We use it as a jumping off point to show people that they can go quite a distance. I got some heat exhaustion/sickness a few hours in and had to take a break, then developed foot problems at 42 miles about and just called it there. I think there's 2 big hurtles not directly related to fitness to overcome in any ultra: Nutrition and chafing/blistering. Its so easy to fall behind on nutrition and not realize it, and chafing can get out of control quickly. I still don't have a great solution to deal with chafing on 20 mile+ road runs.

Just signed up for my first 100 - the Forgotten Florida. In 2024, I ran a 50 miler and the Grand Canyon R3 at a very slow pace. I'm excited and nervous. I do have a question - in my 50 mile training, it emphasized back to back long runs almost every weekend. After last year's heavy load, I had bad issues with runner's knee that I'm still trying to get over. I've been reading about Camille Herron's approach to training and yours, and I'm starting to realize a lower load is possible. Would love your thoughts on training load and total weekly mileage leading up to a 100. Thanks for all the great content!
