Antisemitism is bad. However, we should also call out people that call basically anything antisemitism. For example, there were Jewish students that made a documentary criticizing Israel, and it was called antisemitic. For more information, there is a video on KZread called "College Jewish Group THREATENED For Screening Film Critical Of Israel."

The same fervor that they are giving to protecting the Jewish community needs to be consistently given to the Palestinians who are facing genocide at this very moment. Consistency is everything. @@scottjohnson8687 It should also be mentioned that Harvard receives federal funding, and any school that receives federal funding cannot condone targeted harassment against protected classes on campus. That is why universities in the South don’t have university sanctioned white supremacist groups despite their being many who wouldn’t hesitate to join among their student populations. So even if Sunny wanted to make this about the constitution, she would hit a brick wall when reminded of the fact the Supreme Court allows the government to impose guidelines and restrictions to universities who accept federal funds. She needs to read Title VI which says “No person in the United States shall, on the ground of race, color, or national origin, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”

This conversation was about code of conduct, not law. Sunny brought up law to excuse their behavior. It is mudding the case at hand. Sunny is spot on that free speech is protected de facto. The same handwringing is rarely done when the Ku Klux Klan talks about whites being a superior race. We also have to reckon with the fact hat many of these protests are expressly regarding a geopolitical issue, and the cruel actions of a internationally supported government, and not a race.

You're right, you can protest in the USA, but if a student was calling for the genocide of Black people or Muslims there would be consequences whether that be suspension or expulsion, and for some reason that protection is not extended to Jews. As a German, I need to explain a few things: first of all, there are daily protests against the actions of the Israely government in Gaza in many German cities, protected by german police, they are not forbidden. That's a myth, please inform yourself better. Videos of these protest can be found easily on KZread or Instagram, for example. What is outlawed in Germany, everywhere and at these protests, is hatespeech. Against jews, against muslims, against people pf color, against LGBTQ, against minorities in general. People who would say in Germany what Harvard students have publicly said would be arrested and would find themselves swiftly in front of a judge. And rightfully so. Germany has learned, from its history, that voilence starts with language, and that threats, hate and hateful speech, lead to worse things. Which is why that language, verbalized or in symbolic form like swastikas, is a crime in Germany. That might not be the American way, but it is one of the reasons, that many young Israelis, who don't like their Trumpian government, move to Berlin, not Washington.

Sunny's limited experience as lawyer has no relevance to the arguments being made here. First amendment is not upheld at campuses in practice. This has been well documented and is expressed explicitly in the policies of many campuses. We all know that the rules have been enforced differentially and none of this handwringing has occurs when someone from the wrong group says something (people canceled over saying merit in scientific work matters).

To say that if it happened to any other group there would be uproar is honestly disgusting because it shows that she’s either uninformed (which is sad because holds such a large platform) or deliberately obtuse. I went to college with a guy who would persistently chase black people calling them an inferior race. He was fine. So if you want to make the argument that these things shouldn’t happen, that’s valid, but don’t make statements that it’s different because they’re Jewish. Black people, MUSLIM people, and Asian people experience this as well.

There can’t be targeted harassment against protected classes in schools that receive federal funding since the days of desegregation. Sunny is wrong, by her logic white supremacist groups have a right to protest the existence of black people on their campus, that obviously isn’t the case because no college campus in America has university sanctioned white supremacist groups.

She is an attorney which is why it's rather strange that her response to Sarah and Alyssa's argument that a private institution is not bound by the 1st amendment was to cite Brandenburg V. Ohio a case in which the court ruled that Ohio (which is clearly not a private institution. I think we can all agree that the state of Ohio is clearly a government entity.) had to follow the first amendment and allow disgusting evil speech. I will say I have greatly appreciated Sunny's focus on international law, holding Israel accountable for how it conducts war, and reminding the audience of the humanity of so many in Gaza. But her legal argument in this instance made no sense to me and seemed to clearly lack relevance...

This is so gross. Of course the speech is reprehensible but the question is, 'Does it go against the code of conduct'. That is a LEGAL question, not a MORAL question. The hearing just wants to make it sound like a moral question not a legal question.

This was a prime example of what happens when emotion overrides logic. It’s clear that Alyssa’s emotions on this subject over rode her even being able to hear the logic that Sunny was explaining. The fact Alyssa basically said that the college’s code of conduct should be able to go beyond the US constitution is enough to show she was letting her emotions override her talking points, because we have listened to her in many other topics put her logic first - mainly being when she is talking out against fellow republicans who get caught up in the Jan 6 Insurrection rhetoric.

Except that's not what Alyssa said. It's how Sunny (wrongly) interpreted Alyssa's argument. Alyssa is completely right when it comes to the University Codes of Conduct. Expelling or taking disciplinary action against a student who calls on genocide on campus does not violate the First Amendment because the First Amendment puts limits on the ability of the government to limit speech, not on businesses or other institutions. Alyssa never asked the colleges to go against the constitution. Sunny herself was defending the "Freedom of Association" and saying "It's consequences not cancel culture" when people were getting fired from their jobs for saying the smallest 'offensive' things... I guess she changes the way she interprets the law depending on the political argument she wants to make :(

Alyssa using that good old rhetorical tactic to reframe what was said from directing hatful speech at someone (thus becoming actionable) with committing physical violence on someone, reducto ad absurdum. She could have simply made the point that Harvard is a private institution and not bound by the first amendment, which protects speech from gov’t action. Harvard also can make the choice to follow the law as their code of conduct, which it seems they have done.
