University of Montana Shorts Showcase: Lost Birds

Фильм және анимация

"Lost Bird" is Lynn-Wood Fields short film about an assimilated Native American woman searching for both her mother and her culture while coming "home" to her reservation after 30 years away. This short film successfully proved to Native American author Debra Magpie Earling that Fields was the right filmmaker to make a feature film from Earling's novel Perma Red.

"Lost Bird" is a term used to describe Native adoptees who suffer from the damage caused by loss of tribal identity and growing up “different” in an inhospitable world. The Indian Adoption Project was a federal program of the 60s that took thousands of Navaho children from their homes and placed them in Catholic residential institutions and Mormon farms. As many as one third of Indian children were separated from their families between 1941 and 1967, according to a 1976 report by the Association on American Indian Affairs.
