University encampments for Gaza, and Keir Starmer's Tory-shaped elephant in the room | Podcast #51

On this week's episode, Ed gives us the lowdown from the student encampment at Cambridge University in protest against Israel's attacks on Gaza.
Then, we get into the story that's sticking to Keir Starmer like glue: how can Labour be a party of the left while they accept defections from the furthest right factions of the Tory party?

I think the "Poppers" weirdness you tend to encounter with vendors comes down to the fact that they're not supposed to be advertised or sold for human consumption. It's a bit like the whole MCAT/mephedrone being sold as "plant fertiliser" situation that carried on for a while, before they eventually just banned it entirely one April. Not that I remember... I think poppers are supposed to be used as some kind of "room odouriser", but I have no idea what the manufacturers mean by that and I'm sure noone else buying them does either. If you are someone who enjoys flirting with the bizarre edges and loopholes of the UK legal system's drugs laws, I would personally highly recommend seeking out a cannabis prescription. I've had one since 2018. As disgustingly Tory as it is, if you happen to have a couple hundred quid per month spare for some medical fees and an ounce of weed, suddenly it's just fine to be a stoner. Private medicine where you can effectively opt out of drug laws! What a stupid country. I'd honestly get yourself some weed and poppers to take the edge off the hypocrisy. "Odourise" your rooms a bit and chill out.

They never act weird round my area, you can buy them easily from my newsagents, both of them , and from the cheap homeware stuff shops ! Maybe they get weird when someone acts like they never use them or know what they are. Tho that said, the (I think maybe gay) son of my Asian newsagent did ask me what they were when I bought some and I had to try and give an honest but polite answer 😅

Because we are in a very deep propaganda bubble that began 23 years ago, to cover up the fact that the 9/11 hijackers were calling for an end to the support for Israel... Bush told people instead that "they hate us for our freedom". At the time, these were just "Arab terrorists", but younger people weren't responding so well to such overt racism, esp so soon after the dismantling of the Apartheid in South Africa showed people that terrorism does end when you stop denying people their rights and fair treatment etc, there was a risk that people would apply the same thinking about the black African terrorists to the Arab terrorists, especially if Israel's brutal treatment of Palestinians was going to make us a target... so the Arab terrorist was re-cast as the Islamic terrorist, because "Islam isn't a race", and so, Islamophobia was born. Net&Yahoo was actually a main driver of this, he basically just picked up his old talking points from the 80s, about how the Palestinian resistance groups were just proxies of the Soviet Union, who hated democracy because they were communists, trained and funded by Russia, and started saying they were proxies of Iran who hated democracy because they are Islamist. With Israel being seen as being at the forefront of this "coming clash of civilisations", people who didn't buy into the islamophobic indoctrination, would start being labelled as "antisemitic", which is a proxy for being on the wrong side in battle between democracy and Islam, and removed from positions of influence and power. It's the same psychology that was present in Germany in the 1930s where people were accused of being "anti-German" to the exact same effect, except this has spread far beyond a single country. The rejection of the word "islamophobia" is because "phobia" is an irrational fear, and there is wide spread acceptance that the fear is not irrational, but warranted... support for the collective punishment in Gaza is because this psychology makes people think that they have to hurt and kill a lot of "them" to "send a message", because the only way you can stop people who "hate us" from trying to hurt us, is to show "them" that if they hurt any of "our people", we can hurt all of "their people". If you haven't watched "the labour files" documentaries, I recommend, as this is based on leaks showing this happening within the Labour party, with cooperation from the BBC et al. "Never again" is closer than people realise... control over the use of force is almost entirely captured by the islamophobes.

To answer the question, Catholics accept all baptisms done in the name of the Trinity (after all, John the Baptist was not himself baptised). Being baptised, and requesting last rites is more than enough for a priest to administer the sacrament

If the Labour Government has an outright simple majority then they will be able to do whatever they want without any scrutiny or supervision whatsoever. Not sure how I feel about that personally, you have to have a hell of a lot of trust in a party if they gain that sort of power. The other important thing to note there is that if the Labour party do have such an absolutely historic majority, and fail to capitalise on it in meaningful ways then they'll never be in office again.

Personally, I won't be voting for any of the big parties, but if Starmer gets a big majority, I wouldn't expect him to do anything good with it. I think the only thing that might make him do something is fear of the consequences of not doing so. People are getting angry because the mask has slipped on the nature of the people who rule over us, so all bets are off!

Stumbled across the Hackney town hall pro Palestine encampment on Friday (Ab so lute Lee Leathered) after attending a party on a mates canal boat - after marveling at the enormous beautiful Palestine 🇵🇸 flag I noticed peeps were sat around a table feeling the righteous tingles of justice tickle my huevos I politely asked to join, what ensued was possibly the funniest hour long conversation of my life as one after another of hackneys late night citizenry came to pay a visit to the encampment. Each one unknowingly and unintentionally smashing every pc term in the protesters playbook. Props to the american bloke who sat on his iphone 15 promax tweeting and tutting because of the ‘noise’ face like a smacked arse wouldnt cut it sunshine (I’d bet a ton his dad bought the flag…) Not so much to my new 57 year old Italian Hackneyite friend Pasquale who got us kicked out when he forgot to use the term Zinonists and instead said ‘The Jews’ even less props to me (mr geordie who looks like he just got off the boat from Norway) who accidentally said ‘our land’ when meaning to say ‘public land’… 🤦🏼‍♂️ and then for being so drunk that I then said what my head said which was “whoops dont double down it…” either way I’d like a badge of honour please @dianeabbott for defending Hackneys finest from ‘a wokes’ ;) what a palava #haveabana #freegaza 🍉🍉🍉🍉

I have this hypothesis that the time we feel worst about the weather stuff is when the rate of change of the length of the day is the fastest (i.e. close to the equinox). I have no evidence for this at all, but I feel like our brains deal worse with the length of the day changing rapidly than they do with just longer or shorter days.

On the plane crash/final rights topic... if the plane went down in a body of water, could the priest baptise you, then administer the rights? Does it matter if it's salt water or fresh, or would you have to land in a large repository of holy water? There's enough uncertainty here that it might be time for another Council of Nicaea to sort these out.

26:38 Some extra info, the 2 people in the cockpit policy was not implemented after another high profile accident where this is highly suspected to have happened in 2013 on LAM Mozambique Airlines Flight 470, so 2 years before Flight 9525 but the crash didn’t get the worldwide media coverage of Flight 9525, possibly because it happened in a third world country. In case someone sees a crew member typing the code into the door, the pilot in the cockpit can disable the door remotely hence the Captain (in the case of Flight 9525 couldn’t get back in). Also in 1994 the captain of an Aeroflot Airbus A310 allowed his children into the cockpit to sit in the captain’s chair. One of the children nudged the control column enough to disengage the autopilot and that started a sequence of events that led to an accident.

Starmer has spat in my face as a voter, saying he values the headbanger vote more with this move. Having a party covering so many views makes it pointless. I really hope he’s lost more votes from reasonable left wingers than gained right wing headbangers. They already have Reform. I despise what he has done with the party and him.

My partner does Pagaents and, don't get me wrong, I was very sceptical. There are still lots of pageants out there which are bad and still very judgemental towards woman and are based on looks. I would encourage you guys to do more research though on modern pageants as I can tell you guys have a negative opinion, as I did. However, from watching pageants, finding out more about them through my partner and now her running one, I've seen how modern pageants are extremely positive. Modern pageants (the forward thinking ones, the number of which are growing) are based on confidence and your advocacy. Advocacies are some of the main parts of pageants, for which they raise thousands of pounds for charity and bringing about awareness of a wide range of issues (social, environmental etc). My partner runs an environmental-themed pageant, and she has had candidates who have been given a platform by the pageant to be able to get onto the youth COP Council, which she likely would not have been able to do without the platform, and much more. There are still swimwear rounds, but the emphasis on these are far less about the male gaze and more now about body positivity and women embracing their bodies. We are seeing a far greater range of age and size, which I think reinforces the idea that women of all backgrounds are feeling more comfortable that they can be candidates without fear of old judgements involved in pageants. Lots of people still see pageants as they once were so don't blame you guys (and there are still pageants which sadly lean into this) but many are bucking the trend and trying to put pageants back into the hands of women, and for positive means.

I think Elphicke’s defection does speak to Tory & floating voters. Many ordinary people don’t follow politics as deeply and are also less tribal so can understand. Think most people now see the decay everywhere, the lies and sleaze and just want some competence now. Poulter speaking out on NHS 1st & then Elphicke on Govt incompetence resonates when people can’t get to see GP or dentist or police etc. Somehow she gives Tory voters permission to vote Lab! Plus Sunak’s not popular & Starmer is trusted so this is helpful to Lab. On Elphicke, her previous views & comments have been awful. However she’s not on Lab policy benches, not standing & won’t be around for long anyway with summer recess & GE. Relationships are complex and we know from Charlie’s record that he likely won’t have been great with her either. Jess Phillips explained pattern well on LBC Goodall show. Also Tories have turned very vicious towards her & it must be a tough time for her. Apparently she’s done some good work on social housing in past and maybe it’s easy to get lost in group-think sat next to Gullis & that crew!

Going on about a MP who isn't even standing for re-election morning, noon, and night only serves to help the Tories. True that average ppl dont give a fuck but since politics is 99% symbolic gesture and 1% actual policy, accepting someone with her history and beliefs into the party is a useful indicator of how principled the government in waiting is going to be. And while people might *think* they value pragmatism over principles, they may begin to realise that’s exactly the attitude that’s brought the country to its knees
