this episode is quite possibly the best 30 mins of british comedy in the 80s. The entire start to finish has everything thats best in all of the 2 series of the show. Love the rush to the station with motorhead, love the neil and rik revision scene - even now this is hilarious. Vivian loosing his head. The University Challenge and other famous comic stars. Absolutely brilliant. BBC took risks and made bloody good TV then

Totally agree. Everything “came together” just right in this episode -especially the Motörhead and Kings Cross Station montage. Tight editing, plus the right blend of “psychology ... and extreme vilence”.

A well known fact worth repeating, the Young Ones had bands on the show because that changed the show from a sitcom to a variety show and so entitled to a bigger budget from the BBC.

Can you imagine being 14 when this was airing? The atmosphere at school the next day was just ELECTRIC! You just don't get the same shared experience these days ..

I love how the station scene is filmed with real people who are like "wtf is goin on"?..ha ha ha

The way Vyvyan stuffed the doughnut in his mouth still cracks me up. The whole series was - and still is - just . . . as Rik often said . . . "BRILLIANT!". The Young Ones took alternative comedy by storm.

It was weird watching this when it aired. That was my local train station and I used to see that lady at the kiosk every week when I used to get the train to college. I don't think that she had any idea what Ade Edmunson was up to there, lol

As soon as the band started, I said out loud "This show was Friggin' brilliant!" I actually watched the original broadcast when it aired because I was living in the U.K. at the time with the U.S. Air Force. So "The Young Ones", "Twenty Minutes into the Future" (Max Headroom Pilot), "Blackadder" first three seasons, "Spitting Image." I understand now why people think there is something wrong in my head sometimes because these were all my influences and I never realized how different a few years of my life really were. I still say the name Neal like Neal pronounces it "Neeeeeallll."

Vyvyan throwing the grenade screaming ACHTUNG is one of the best things ever.

I had all the episodes on VHS. The 80s were rad. The addition of guys like them added dry sarcasm from across the pond. Not all people got it or understood it. I loved all of it. 🇺🇸 🇬🇧✌😆

- This scene with Motorhead is one of the finest examples of why The Young Ones became a classic.

This ends just before a line that dropped me to the floor laughing when I was about 20. Rik pretends there's an entry for "World's stupidest bottom burp, Vyvyan, Britain", then Neil adds "It says Rik here". Killed me outright.

My favorite part of this is that the camera is on the wrong guitarist every time they solo.... :)

Slam door trains and words like, "spazmo" make me consider my mortality.

That train scene between Rik and Neil is my favourite scene of all the episodes of the Young Ones and there were many great scenes.

I heard it was to get extra funding for the show as it could beclassed as a "variety" show if it had musical performances.

I remember this aged 13. Just mind-blowing and utterly brilliant. Those indeed were the days…

My favourite episode. The Young Ones. Motorhead. Ace of Spades. Perfect.

Shows what a superb comedian Nigel Planer is too, always slightly underrated in the Young Ones but is superb in this .

Can't believe this video ends just before Rick's rant about Neil doing 'loads and loads of work' in preparation for University Challenge... Maybe my favourite bit in the whole series.

I remember having these on vhs in the house in the 90s as a kid my parents were cool enough to let me and my little mates watch them ✌️ still brilliant to this day brings back great memories.

So many years ago I'd forgotten about this. Suddenly Motorhead are giving it some noise. Outstanding.

I was a student in the UK, and had to order a flatmate to not watch 'food and drink' so I could see it. There was no internet, no VHS, and a repeat of it would be months later. If you wanted to share the vibe, you HAD to watch it live on TV.

Toxteth O'Grady! I still remember that name well from the first time this show was aired, the next day at school most of the pupils were recreating every scene all day, apart from the few who's parents wouldn't let them watch the show, the poor sods .

I was to young to watch this, But parents letting me stay up on the black and white TV in the 1980s still laugh my head off

Forgot just how incredible this episode was, when vyvyan kicked his head up the tracks! I laughed so hard it hurt the 1st time i saw this one.

I can remember watching this the Evening it was first Aired My Mates Parents wouldn't let them Watch it but My Parents Who i Dearly Miss Let me Record it on the VHS VIDEO recorder. Great times And i bought my First Motorhead Album when we visited The Isle of Man. Motorcycles Motorhead and being a biker has been a part of my life Since all due to The Young ones

When I first saw this episode back in the 80's it blew my mind to see Motorhead playing. I was already a fan, but they got no TV / radio exposure from what I remember, so seeing them on The Young Ones made my day.

Man I've loved Motorhead since 1983- the greatest metal band ever

It reminds me of my Uni days! I had to give an intro to freshers and after a short talk on 'This is the first time many of you have lived away from home, managed a budget, had access to sex, alcohol and drugs... please, don't do them all in the first weekend, pace yourself.' I went 'And now a short documentary... ladies and Gents, I give you the "young ones"'.

One of the best bands in history, appearing in one of the best tv shows in history. Just epic. This is one of my favourite episodes as well, and little did I know back then that some of the guest stars would later become some of my favourite film/tv personalities.

Groovy violent creative surreality. That's the way I like it baby. Stellar episode!

I remember watching this at ashington college halls of residence 😀 it was the only time the tv room was full .happy days .I always remember the one when Neil had a cold and was in the bin liner 😂😂 priceless !

Zooming in on the rhythm guitarist during the solo is pretty sweet

First saw this episode during a re-run on BBC Two in 1999. Became a Motorhead, Rik Mayall fan and Ade Edmonson fan and NEVER LOOKED BACK! \m/ Still can't believe Rik's gone, though. T_T Although I did hear that a memorial for him has been erected near the house where they filmed the show. RIP Rik, "The People's Poet" and the "Spokesperson of a Generaton" and all-round "Complete Bastard". XD

I remember the night that this was broadcast. My older brother came home n brought 2 mates with him as they had heard that Motörhead was going to be on. They couldn't believe that it was a 4 man line-up, Eddie Clarke had returned to help new-boy Phil Campbell out!

The idea to book Motörhead, was inspired. Pity the camera was never on the right guitar during the solo break. Still, lovely period footage of BR in the early 80s accompanied by Ace of Spades. Perfect telly

They used to play this and Bottom right after on YTV here in Canada on saturday late nights. First saw it when I was 12

the greatest episode of the greatest show right there folks.

I freak'n luv Vivian...especially when he gives people the 'up your's mate' sign. Well I'm dun. I'm off to stuff loads & loads of paper down the toilet.

This episode was peak - I remember literally rolling on the floor laughing at this one.

I like that the camera people had the bad sense to focus on the guitars playing rhythm during the solos. : D

They were looking for Fast Eddie who could play it by himself, alone....

They filmed large parts of the young ones in Bristol where I was born, it's interesting doing the 'spot the bits of bristol' game like the train station scene was filmed at Bristol temple meads train station!.

Still one of the best ever entertainment programmes evermade xxxxxxx
