Universal Motion Controller - UMC: Create your own giant RC servos

Ғылым және технология

Thank you to JLCPCB for sponsoring this project, Order yours at jlcpcb.com.
At first I created this UMC in order to control my 3D printed servo I made a while back. I soon realised I could create a modular system that could be used in a great veriaty of applications, which would be very usefull for a lot of people.
The UMC allows you to turn almost any geared brushed motor of about 500 watt, 12V into a radio controlled servo. You could for example turn a windscreen wiper motor into a servo. Windscreen wiper motors are strong, affordable, and pretty easy to get by most of the time if you know where to look. If this is not an option for you, you could simply order a motor with a gear reduction attached to it. If you want to use a specific motor for your project you could also create your own gear reduction, perhaps by the use of 3D-printing, like I did with my 3D-printable servo project (project can be found here: hackaday.io/project/162855-3d...)

    Congratulations, you are the best servo and torque craftsman in the world. And this project helps me to build a device for a disabled person. Blessings for having this talent and sharing it.

    Pretty cool application. The internet has its good and bad points , being able to design your own PCB and have it manufactured/ outsourced is excellent and channels like yours where people share their talents and ideas

    this servo looks amazing. When I finish my 3d printer, my first project will be a servo similar to that one. Greetings from Chile.

    Cool. Is it possible to make one unit can do several servos at once? (For example: 6)

    How does this compare to an Odrive?

  • @BrianBrocken

    @BrianBrocken

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hello Eric I designed this UMC so that it’s possible to turn a regular brushed motor directly in an rc servo with the help of a potentiometer. All the other functions the odrive has like the possibility to control brushless motors and connect different kind of position feedback to it, the UMC has not.

    Hello, the resistance value of the potentiometer is 10K ohm, more info about the servo itself can be found on hackaday (needs to be updated). hackaday.io/project/162855-3d-printable-high-torque-servogear-reduction

    I would exchange the potentiometer with an 49E hall sensor. Much more precise, last forever, and no additional electronics!
