Universal Audio OX Stomp: Bring Dynamic Speaker Modeling Anywhere

Univeral Audio released their OX Reactive Amp Attenuator to critical acclaim, built on their state-of-the-art Dynamic Speaker Modeling technology. Now, with the OX Stomp, they’ve honed these breakthroughs to provide a powerful, versatile speaker emulator in the convenient form of a stompbox. Boasting an array of speaker and cab combinations, mic position options, and extensive rig arrangements, UA’s OX Stomp might just be the key to ditching your amp altogether. Mitch Gallagher and Nick Bowcott joined forces to show you just what it can do. Check it out!
NOTE: In this video, Mitch uses the term “IR” to describe the OX Stomp’s speaker emulation. The OX Stomp actually uses physical modeling - they call it “Dynamic Speaker Modeling” - to achieve their amazing results. As opposed to using a static impulse response (IR), Universal Audio has dynamically modeled every single detail of the speaker and cabinet’s performance for ultra-realistic sound quality and feel.

    Just one thing to note - You refer to IR's a few times. This doesn't use IR's. Its physically modelled. Its a completely different technology. Effectively the same as a guitar 'Profiler' such as Kemper/ToneX (which are like virtual snapshots) vs a guitar 'modeller' such as the Helix, which is algorithmic based. So IR's are profile based as they are static and cannot truly emulate all speaker conditions (hence why IR library's can be significantly large). UA are the first as far as i know to do algorithmic speaker processing and imho you can really tell the difference in sound and feel.

    Hi; UA told me, on their own KZread vid, use a (2)-1/4” > whichever female phones receptacle & that’s their ‘cans solution #1’. I’m betting a 4x mini mixer (zoom?) will also give us a cans jack. For tracking, they said (1)-1/4” > cabs female receptor & track in on the (other) mono output. But, aye, I’d rather have had them cram even a 1/8” cans output.

    So, while this all seems really cool, I can't figure out the why! If I have a modeler, they all have IRs built in. Most have the reverbs, etc, too. Preamp pedals have IRs built in. The only plus of the OG Ox is the load box for converting a real amp to line level recording and / or lower sage/recording volume. I guess what I'm saying is that the only thing that I might find useful would be a pedal sized OX with the load box and these features.

  • @sordel5866

    @sordel5866

    Well, you might think the Ox Stomp sounds better, or is more controllable, than what you have in a modeller. Also you might want to take the workload off your modeller's CPU. Then again, you may have an amp you like but be using it occasionally in larger venues where you need it "mic'd" to Front Of House. But I agree that for the difference this will make in practical application it won't be worth it for most guitarists.

    Many of the modelers use IRs that are static snapshots of a sound, whereas OX Stomp uses physical modeling to create dynamic emulation speaker cabs, microphones and room to and you can hear the increased dynamics plus you get more control with a wide range of cabinets, multiple mics and effects to dial in your sound. So if this makes your modeler sound better and gives you more control then it may be useful.

    This unit is right in my wheelhouse because I use two different switchable sansamp preamps into additional pedals via a switcher without a cabinet emulated output.... This solves that problem without having to do so with more awkward and lower quality alternatives that aren't pedalboard based typically. I like things as modular as possible so I can swap things out with minimal negatives - this hits that goal square in the nose. I am not locked in a preamp with a unit like this for instance. Nor do I have to pay for attenuation I don't need or will actually use. Just run this into whatever the situation dicates... Done

    @@digitalchris6681 what’s the difference between an IR and dynamic cab?

  • @digitalchris6681

    @digitalchris6681

    10 ай бұрын

    @@DanBires an IR is just a static equaliser (ie applies a fixed bass and treble cut to match the cab frequency response at an arbitrary volume) although you can tweak the Torpedo response a bit by changing mics etc (they call this "dynaIR but in reality it ain't dyna-anything). The exact UA method is lost in the mysteries of commercial copyright, but is best considered as a number of IRs, each taken at a different cab volume; so, as you turn up your amp, the UA seamlessly morphs from one IR to another. So you play quiet and you get the cab/speaker behaving itself; but play loud, and the cab/speaker emulates cone resonance; play very loud and it emulates come breakup.

    @@digitalchris6681 " (they call this "dynaIR but in reality it ain't dyna-anything)" they call it DynIR because you can move the mics around (whihc the OX stuff doesn't seem to do) and also use the speaker overload parameter. So it is dynamic, but in a different way.

    What they call "rig" isn't a rig, it's only what comes after the poweramp : cab/mic, etc... A rig should also have what comes before : amp, pedals... They should have called it something else (like "cab/mic IR" or something). If you keep the exact same chain and settings but just change their "rig", it wont' magically get you from a high gain metal tone to a crunchy funk tone or a dreamy clean... The only way to do that would be to have MIDI switching between all these devices (synergy module and OX stomp pedal).
