    The shimmering tails on the amp reverb gave it away, but I honestly preferred the Dream 65 for every example...it's so clean and powerful dry, and so dingy and gritty when overdriven.

    I think one of the best uses for something like this would be running it through the effects loops of an amp or into a power amp and a cab. That would be my use. I love my Mesa mark iv but it doesn’t quite have a fender clean sound, but a lot of the saturation of tube sound for me comes from big clean headroom with a pushed power amp, so I’ll imagine that brings this pedal to life

    A sounds fantastic, but I feel like you can hear a little bit of the room in B and that’s the giveaway for me. Feels like you can’t go wrong with either it’s just whether you want convenience or the actual feeling of the amp in the room pushing air.

    I think a big factor is whether or not your sound guy/venue will even let you have an amp on stage/run it at a decent volume. And if you travel a lot, especially flying, and you think both examples sound great, then the Dream is a no brainer!

    I know this is an old thread, but as I get more into the UAD ecosystem, I keep digging these up. Great comparison and really shows just how good the UAD version is. But, I guessed it right LOL!. There two things that listening to this with decent cans revealed to my old ears: One is cleaner to me, but only by a hair. Two, the reverbs. The second one just had more of that springy kinda vibe happening, I think they call it "drip"??? I dunno. But again, fantastic comp, I can easily see myself picking one of these up soon.

    I listened to the clean sounds, and thought A was the pedal, B was the amp. I liked the amp a lot more, but the pedal did sound very nice. I don't know how to describe this, but the treble and bass of the amp sounded more "unified", more like two parts of a whole. The pedal's treble and bass sounded more "seperate", more like two discreet entities that didn't have an effect on each other. I don't know if that's a good way to describe what I heard and felt; maybe calling the amp more "organic" sounding would be a better use of words. BTW, I just finished up using a Dream '65 in an Off-Broadway show. When the show ended I bought it from the production company, and I look forward to experimenting with it at home; maybe even on gigs someday.

    @@RiggsTaylor absolutely. A/B tests are always tricky. They both sounds great on their own. So its not about good/bad or right/wrong. For the first time ever I’m ready to try this UA out. The only unit (to my ears) that actually sounds like the real thing and with out this strange digital vibe the others always have. 😀

    I just kept thinking how much punchier A sounded and I was convinced that A was the amp. Now I don't know what to think. I've been on the fence about picking up the Dream 65, cause I tend to prefer amps over "gadgets" but this thing sounds really good.

    I liked the B better because it wasn't as pushy and thich and rich as the A - the B had more breath in its attack (and I don't think it is due to the difference in reverb)... but that darn pedal sure is good! hard to tell how the comparison would fare in a mix environment - I suspect the fullness of the A might take up too much dynamic space - but the B might turn out to be proportionally difficult too clean up.... difficult stuff...

    Clean I actually preferred the pedal - I ordered the dream right away - but destorted the Amp sounds 10 times better. The pedal sounded very digital and unpleasant with higher distortion. That's what digital pedals still can't get right. ;-

  • @RiggsTaylor

    @RiggsTaylor

    Interesting! It’s definitely tighter sounding, maybe a bit brighter, but that could be dialed out I think. The brightness can help in a band mix though. I usually have to add a bit more treble than I would opt for in an isolated guitar track.

    The fuzz part and reverb gave it away, can't blame UA since fuzz is very hard to take for any amp pedal.

    @RiggsTaylor

    Agree. Fuzz and spring reverb are really hard to get right, but honestly I think UA captures the feeling/vibe as well as any modeler I’ve played. I think the Kemper does a better job with pedals, but that doesn’t mean it sounds as accurate. Regardless, not bad for under $400!

  • @JediMasterRick2

    Wow. I’m shocked. I was sure A was the amp the whole way through because I thought it sounded better and took the fuzz better. I just got a Dream this week. I love it. I only have that and a Rat for overdrive. I’m selling my MX5 from Headrush because the Dream has an excellent clean sound and it’s so easy to use. No need to mess with Hz and whatever. Only thing I suggest is an eq pedal which I’m getting because when you play loud through a PA it get very pitched. I think they should patch it. An eq pedal after it should do the trick.

    I'm cheating with the tc electric 65 deluxe amp in a box. I have a cab modeling device that I go into and after the tc, it has 9 cab simulations, then I have an Ibenez tube screamer I have a vibrato pedal before that, if I want vibrato. I had all that other stuff before I purchased the tc electronic 65 deluxe and it makes the tc sound spectacular. I still might get the dream at a later date, it sounds great and I like that it's stereo but for now I'm really happy.

    By the way the dream sounds amazing in your demo. I noticed the difference in the clean sounds. The amp is just a tad smoother sound but once you start adding pedals it was almost impossible to tell them apart. I had the 65 deluxe reverb reissue, I sold it about 10 years ago.
