🔬 Unique microtome | Amateur Microscopy

Ғылым және технология

This is a somewhat unique looking table microtome. It functions quite well and uses standard razor blades. In this video I have a closer look at it.

Inspired by your channel, just wondering if this microtome can be used to cut some hard materials, such as fur or hair fiber?

This would not be a problem, if it is supported. I think it will be difficult though, to put the cut hair or fur flat on the slide. It is like a small disk.

Thanks a lot for the reply. May I contact you for the details, if it could cut hair nicely, l really want to have one.

In English we tend to use the term “pine needle” rather than leaf. Is there a difference in common usage in German? Online translations suggest keifernadel for pine needle and blatt for leaf. I can’t complain though, as your English is better than my (almost nonexistent) German! And as always, thank you for your fun and inspiring videos!

In German you say Tannennadel (which is also needle). I know that with the needle, but in my prepared slide box, they also call it pine leaf. Technically it is a leaf. I have to admit that I myself was thinking about how to call it properly, and then simply decided to stick to the label on the slide.

Tips from my old advisor: keep the elderberry pith with the sample wet. Use a fine camel hair paint brush to move the sections so as not to damage them.

I think microtomes are one of the most overpriced tools, histology microtomes are just a lever with a screw that is turned by a step down gear mechanism in increments with each rotation yet they cost about the same as a sedan.
