@@WolfeMomma you probably won't ever see this comment, but I hope you can help me. How does one pronounce the name "Eochaidh?" I have pronounced it twenty different ways and I am well known in my town, but I have no idea how to actually pronounce my name. Here is what I wrote on your Boys Names Vid; "I'm from Ulster, many years ago. recently I got a Hungarian Vizsla puppy for my son and called the puppy Connor. A good old Ulster name - I understand it means lover of hounds. I really enjoyed you channel. Ireland is one people, one nation, one heritage." No famous Burns?? What about the actor Burn Gorman, who played the assassin on GOT from Kings Landing who killed Lord Commander Mormont of the Night's watch and drank wine from his skull?? Back on Gin Alley, he was FOOKIN' LEGEND!! BTW if you're explaining Irish names, I've always wanted a clear answer on why I got saddled w/ an extra "L" (on the end of the name Neill)? Everyone in US assumes it's a typo! I know it's not as extreme as the name spelling problems these people have, I'd still be grateful if u can help clear that up ,-- it bugs me

For your information "groot" is Dutch for large, but it's not pronounced as you did. Double o in Dutch is pronounced (usually and in this case) as a long o and gr is pronounced with a guteral g. Then there is the word "reus", where the r is a rolling r and eu is kind of pronounced as "uh". I'm actually not sure what word you tried to pronounce since it sounded a bit like "greus" or something. Reus means giant and groot means large.

There's no K in the Irish language or Y so those names are definitely spelt wrong. Ockey is spellt Eochaidh or Eochaí in Irish. Ardcill would be spelt with a C. Burne is an English spelling too. Slevin is wrong too as V is only used for imported words in Irish. There are two Ns in Donn. Cuan is a name on its own too without the Donn.

Obviously, the world is discovering the beauty and uniqueness of traditional Irish names. The problem is naming a child where they'd have to be cursed with spelling and pronouncing them to everybody not familiar with Irish. I like Jarlath, as it is or sometimes "Jar-lat", Setanta and Senan, and Eanna (Ay-uh-nuh)and Donncha (Donn-nah-kah) for boys and Cathal (cah-hul). Aodhan, Aidan is now too popular as are Cian,(key-in), Conor, and Darragh, or Dara which means oak. For girls, I love Saoirse which means freedom. (Seer-sheh) and Aoiffe, EE-feh.
