The Union Pacific’s Challenger No 3985 is going to be restored.
Union Pacific donated Challenger No. 3985 to the non-profit Railroading Heritage of Midwest America (RRHMA) who plans to restore it back to operating condition.

One cannot help from being overwhelmed by just looking at these majestic old work horses that graced the landscape from sea to shining sea,from purple mtn.majesty,to amber Waves of grain. They will not be forgotten 🇺🇸🙏🇺🇸
Everyone is so focused on 3985 being restored, but the fact that 5511 is also planned for restoration to operate is awesome to me . Pretty sure she's the only surviving steam locomotive with Young's valve gear.

UP 3985 came to Louisville in the late 1980s or early 1990s. I saw it on display. It was huge and sat there in the yard “breathing.” The next day it departed late and came blasting through my neighborhood so fast that it was past you before you could get a good look at it. I was thrilled! It was on its way from Louisville to Huntington, WV.

Fun fact, 3985 is running with 4014’s tender. It was not converted to oil in time for the 150th anniversary of the golden spike, so they used 3985’s tender and will continue to do so.
@ethanmorel2746

They’ll return 4014’s original tender once they convert it to burn oil. Then 3985 will get its tender back.

What a wonderful video young lady. Once it's restored they should have a triple header 4014, 844, and 3985 that would be a beautiful and amazing sight to see just one time!!!! I do wish U.P. could have done the renovation tho but it's good it's getting restored tho.
I chased the challenger through Northern California in 1993. Impressive machine.
Can't wait to see her on the line again
👍Thank you. Your reporting style was spot on. you asked the right questions, gave very nice talk on some back story's. Great Job.
2:51 She STILL has 4014’s tender! You think they would’ve converted that over to oil by now and given Challenger hers back! In any case, roll Challenger roll!
im a 3985 railfan but im not from USA im just a canadian railfaner but i still like UP No.3985 and UP No.844 also No.4014
It's sad after the bigboy took the spotlight and all the glory the challenger got kicked to the curb. Can see donating the other equipment but ditching the challenger as well is nothing but shameful.

I some what agree but the engine has so many problems when they got it going the the 80s they kind of cut corners and did not properly fix some things and for some reason UP still will not fix it which is bs
@HustleMuscleGhias

I think it boils down to budgetary reasons. They have a fixed budget to run their steam program on and between 844 and 4014 they do not have enough money to do the necessary repairs to do a full overhaul of 3985 on the same scale that 844 and 3985 and operate all three as they would like to do. As we all know, 844 was stripped down a number of years ago and had everything fixed and I assume the same was done to 4014. In a brief conversation that I had with a member of the steam team on 844's Tennessee Tour and I was told that the plan for 3985 was for it have the same level of rebuild that 844 had when 4014 was completed. All things considering, it could have been worse - they could have been halfway through with the rebuild and pulled the plug and THEN donated years after the fact as in the infamous case of Norfolk and Western 1218 and have the real possibility that there might be parts that are lost forever.

These steamers aren’t cheap to maintain, and with 3985’s “largest locomotive” gimmick passed on to the 4014 she’s not as special as she once was. Coupled with needing extensive repairs, I understand why UP sidelined her. But they did right by the old girl in donating her to some place where it’ll get it’s well deserved tlc
Look up what's in Ogden Utah at the old Depot. Nice video. I believe they have one Simalar on static display among other wonderful historical machines.

Why wasn’t Thirty-Nine, Eighty-Five built with roller bearings? They were being used successfully on other locomotives by that time.

I'm assuming he already accomplished what he set out to do and is extricating himself using the easiest means available in that confined space. I recommend putting some cardboard on top of the ballast first. It makes it much easier to slide, and it's slightly more comfortable.

And it looks much nicer. Shame all of that heritage is lost, though. However, I would suspect that GE had something to do with its demise. When GE was getting into the production diesel locomotive, I would guess they would not have want a competitor a mile down the road from their main offices and they did “own” the town. Whatever the reason American Locomotive never made it successfully into the diesel era and the the town has pretty much washed their hands of what could have been a heritage they could have capitalized on... There is almost nothing left to show Alco was ever there. That said, it would be really something if either a Big Boy or Challenger would pass through the town of their origin.
