Unimog Barn Find. part 2 - Getting to drive it!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Hey everyone!
Now that the Mog is running. it's time to drive it!
We went through all the important bits underneath, and then took if for an Off-road test drive, in the back-yard!
We eventually got a bit carried away, and just had some off-road fun... Oh well.
If you want to follow this build from the start, Here is a link to the First video:
• Unimog Barn-Find. part...
I have also made a playlist, for the whole build. you can find that here:

    what a hoot this old UniMog has turned out to be, i have a friend who was with the German military stationed in Shilo ,Manitoba and use to visit there and see their Unimogs running around the base performing various tasks and we measured it the drivers feet in the Unimog were at the same height as my head in my Volvo 240, I love all the work in the first video it reminded me of my farm ag equipment days and building tractors for a living back from 1979-1985 good times , love all this old stuff and i know from friends in Germany you can still get most parts you need for them and that is what makes them so attractive to, it doesn't have to be pretty , it just has to work so you can have fun, my uncle on the farm use to say farm tires never give you mileage, they give you longevity,😂 you got a subscriber

    I think all your managing to accomplish is to turn your tires into chocolate donuts. My friend managed to get one of those buried up to its axles in muck and we really didn't have anything to pull it out so we borrowed the neighbor's John Deere 990r tractor with tracks and we got it out with the J.D.

    Dear TAF. I think to hear that the engine is still not running right and has not all the usual "power" output. Not only because it starts bad and smokes, but there are knocks to hear where they don't belong. Maybe at least 1 injection nozzle isn't spraying right but drips a bit. Please kindly allow me to suggest that you check all injection nozzles. Also the glow plugs of course. I'm eagerly looking forward to watch the next part. Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and health to all of you.

    Yes, you are right, i'm also very certain that the injectors are bad. they look like they are the original ones. and have likely never been serviced. and combined with it having stood still for many years, that have very likely lost a lot of spring pressure, and are probably leaking aswell. But don't worry, it's on the list of things to fix 👍

    Unimog is a unique vehicle. I got to spend a couple of hours in one of the new ones at the test facility in Germany. They will pretty much go anywhere. The idea to bring them to the US around 2001 just didn't work out. Unless you just had to go off road or deal with deep snow, they were a little too pricey.

    Really cool to see guys who exactly know what they are doing! Also the engine work! For tyres I recommend Continental/ Mitas 320/70R20 AC70T, they fit on the original 9inch rims . I also run them and the traction is unbelievable, I can drive some stuff in 2WD now which i couldn´t before, even with 4WD! On the video it looks like you already got the nice original -10mm offset rims, but it also seems you got the narrow axles, so spacers or different rims might be needed for the Mitas 320/70R20 AC70T. (if you want to go that direction) Good Luck with your projects!

    Great vehicle, great work! Do you do your own copper bending? It looks great. I think that the air brake unloader you got is not an original WABCO item, but a cheap copy. Hopefully it will last. I also think that the diff. lock was air controlled. Another good thing will be to check the old air compressor for oil carry over. If it does, it will slowly destroy the entire air system. My 0.02$: Any screw or nut you tighten (unless it is used for grounding), always make sure there is a drop of oil or grease on the threads. About 20 years ago I read a study published by Volvo's heavy vehicle division, in which the importance of this was explained, not only in favor of reopening in the future, but also better tightening of the assembly with decreasing force values on the metal. Take care!

  • @KJOff-Road

    @KJOff-Road

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thank you very much! Yes, i actually bend the copper by hand. i do like to make them look nice. Makes for an over-all cleaner look. And yes, the valve is a cheap one. i took the chance, as it is a very simple valve. so it will most likely be ok. and it's easy to replace, should it break. And yes, the lockers are Air-activated. We will be showing that in the next video 👍 We did also check the compressor. and its all good 👍 And yes, i have long ago made it a habit to lubricate all the threads. It dose indeed help reach the correct torque. Thank you for your interest!
