FWIW, in good tune and with well adjusted brakes, you can hit 60mph on the flat with these. If that truck does not have air assist brakes, I'd pull the belt off the compressor, as that robs a good portion of the available horsepower. You will also want to do a good valve adjustment on that engine as any variation in valve clearance can reduce power output. In good tune, the exhaust note on these trucks is amazing with their small displacement high revving 6 cylinder!

Good call!!! I was ready to swap to a higher compression head and sounds like there’s things I could do to increase performance as it is.

Carb kits and most parts you will need are readily available from Expedition Imports in California.

These rigs are so much fun. I've been wrenching on these for 15 years or so. It looks like you have a pretty solid truck there as well! The koffer trucks werent used as heavily as the flatbed trucks, so the bodies are typically in a lot better condition. The '61 404 doka in my profile pic started life as a 2 door radio truck as well.

2.2L M180. The 2.8L was the M130. Pretty rare in a Unimog unless you swap one in from a 1970s 280 sedan.

Yes I think the M130 was an upgrade for the civilian market and rescue vehicles, when the M180 was outdated

I'm in the process of rescuing my grandfathers 1957 404 unimog, it's a flat bed with a hardcab. Currently, it runs okay, but there are some cracs in the exahsut manifold, the fuel system leaks, aaaaand the breaks are not there at all. Hoping to get those issues fixed up, as other than those it's in reaaally good condition :P

No, it is a M180/II engine, almost all Unimog 404 had gas engine driven (Except some 40 or so for the Portuguese army were Diesel). 64.200 Unimog 404 have been build from 1955 to 1980. Mine is from 1955 (short wheel base). Later 404s from the 1970ies had the 110HP M130 engine, mostly not the army version but those for the fire depts. Max. wading depth is 800mm. The yellow sign says: Switch off main battery switch while working on the electrical system. The black one explains the battery heating switch in the battery compartment. It's not called ground control or so, it is called Funkkoffer (a radio and communication vehicle).

I have here sister here so any questions, just ask. For reference it is quit temperamental on choke. When you have it pulled out as you done on the test with the filter pump it would never run right. Procedure is to wait till it runs stable, push the choke half way and then you can use the throttle. I would advise to do a Petronics swap do.

The painted white square with one hash above, marked with the solid dot and numbers is the NATO symbol for 2nd battery, 121st Field Artillery Battalion, maybe the Belgian army unit that owned it? Due to that symbol it was probably the fire direction section, they would operate radios and maintain charts and maps in the back for accurate firing of howitzers.

Yup! Most Mercedes models have self bleeding cooling systems , so there was nowhere else to put it. the top of the engine is about 10 inches below that

The one right in front of the wheel? It's a gauge that tells you which direction the wheels are pointed. Seems unnecessary but if you are driving through a river and the tires are underwater it could be useful

The Mog is begging to be restored. Take most of the rust off with wire wheel or sandblast . Reprime ,repaint and undercoat rustproof everything . Ride it properly and don't destroy it and pass it on to your kids when you die . Oh please don't do the deep water thing too much remember that's what boats are for . The water will get stuck in hard to drain place and cause body to rust faster .

Yup! I’ll clean it up and see if I can see where it seeping from. Might need to pull it apart and put all new gaskets. Is it hard?

Me too. :( I was forced to part with this 'Mog after losing my storage space. I had it running a tad better than it was in this video, but still not really road worthy. I've since bought a house, there will absolutely 100% be a follow-up, it's just a matter of when.
