@@chelisey13 I think the show just took a more boring route with it. The whole point of the Lotus Hotel is that it's like a drug that you can't escape from. The movie did a pretty good job of selling the fact that the characters were basically high on the Lotus' magical effects and being sucked into the trap. In the show, they only miss the deadline because of a dull, exposition-heavy conversation with Hermes rather than actually getting addicted to the casino. And I don't like how Grover immediately thinks of the story of the Lotus flowers. It continues the show's disappointing trend of skipping over all the buildup and mystery by having the characters figure everything out too quickly.

@@Creek932 I actually prefer them figuring things out quickly over how it was done in the books because grover was basically prepared to navigate this world his whole life, it makes more sense that he does remember the story. Overall, I have to say that I truly enjoy this show, it is definitely a comfort watch, but I find that that is something I appreciate.

About the criticism and it being a kids show: Even if the ideas and plot and design are oriented at kids, the criticism seem to be mainly with the execution/implementation of the main plot. It being a kids show doesn't justify poor execution of e.g. a walk&talk.

Also had a quick thought on the pearls he could definitely end up losing one in the chaos of the underworld. Also think the part where their deadline already lapsed is such an interesting twist that even book readers didnt see coming. The oracle said he would find the bolt and return it not when it would be returned 😂. Classic Rick writing there.

On the topic of the solstice passing I want to quote this tweet I read: "The solstice deadline passing in the show shows also to deepen the foil between Luke and Percy's characters. Both failed their quest from the gods. One returned to camp and received pity and scorn (Luke). The other kept going and received glory and love (Percy)." I agree this episode was the worst so far. I read somewhere that in preparation for season 2 the showrunners and Rick and gonna fix mistakes/kinks that the first season has so I do think (like many other shows) season 1 might be a little rocky when adapting the source material to the small screen but I'm hopeful it'll get better... hopefully longer episodes...

So from the POV of someone who hasn't read the books I like that it had that exposition in this episode and i think this is the episode where I stopped thinking poorly of all the gods, like I can really see that the gods are really tying their best in some of these cases in very tough circumstances. Also the casino not being too exciting kind of shows even the best case scenario they weren't really going to get through their in time. On the other points the kids not showing any urgency was a bit confusing and the darkness at the end was a bit rough. Also more time to flesh out all the episodes would not go amiss as the world from what I've seen of the show has been very rich and interesting and could do with more time to explore. That being said I'm big into Greek mythology so they could literally spend an hour per episode just making references to things or humanizing different gods like they did here and I would lose my geeky mind.

I'll say it for everyone that's followed Uncle Rick since forever: All of the changes were done to make the entire series more cohesive from the beginning vs as the books did, because Rick has said multiple times before that he writr them differently now. So, while it's difficult, as with any book to movie/tv show adaptation. I'm also ok without everything being a show vs tell. Percy being told that time works differently by the God of time and space makes sense that he would be in a place where time passes differently. Also, certain things aren't going to be shown in a Disney kids show that were acceptable for the book. A deer killing people people isn't gonna happen, too close to a school shooting. The scene is dark, which is accurate for the being at night, we are just use to having the night fully lit. Tl;dr Rick approved all of the changes to the story for a reason. He was and is a very intentional in his writing. And while the original story works for the book, it doesn't work for a tv show on Disney. The movie seems to be made more for you, as it's action based. I truly can't listen to these takes, as the lotus isn't really important here

If he is ok with changing the story in a way to make it better, then who else is better qualified to do so than the actual creator of the story? The original story wasn't perfect, and had plenty of plot points that needed to be cleared up. I also don't think the show is perfect. But there is a difference between a critique based on the lore of the world that is established vs personal opinion. While I could go scene by scene and comment by comment, why waste my time any further at this point. So you love the reaction and agree? Also it wasn't until the rewatch with you that I noticed the problem with the casino. The actors ability was enough to distract me from the problem with the casino. There was a rollercoaster you can see outside going around it but no one mentions it and it was very low energy. Like another 15 minutes could've solved that without changing much else. Yes the show started with Annabeth being sometimes more unsympathetic as her book-counterpart, but that is because we needed the time spend with Luke (again runtime-problem), but she hast had the biggest transformation so far of the maintrio going from a stand-offish, know-it-all, aloof, traumatized soldier-like girl, that blindly adores the gods to a friend that stands up against the gods for Percy, jokes with and confindes in him and trusts him more that the gods/her mother, while still being smart and strategic. I think people tend to forget how rude she could be at the beginning of the book too, letting their Image of Annabeth from later books overshadow her flaws in the first one. And while she knows a lot - just like said last episode - she doesn't know it all and thinks she is better that the gods (e. g. thinking she can steal Hermes keys with out him noticing, her thinking she can solve the throne trap or Alecto: was she saying that Annabeth is the best demi-god etc? Yes, but she was using Annabeths pride, too, to get to her. One of the points of Annabeth imo ist that she shouldn't have to be the strong soldier, but should be allowed to be just a little girl, who cares for her friends). She is putting up a facade to not get hurt and is giving Percy a hard time because she learned that love hast to be earned. Her identifying Medusa/Cutting them going to the Achery for her was fine imo, because with them being hunted it really wouldn't make sense (problem here is the lacking tension again, show us them running to the Arch and let Annabeths weakness be shown in the Casino, since we already cut out her fear of spiders. And don't make her know every myth out there, that kills the tension from the book anyway). They should empathizes on the Trios Hunger/tiredness more, too (again: Rise the stakes! Show us Zeus anger thought the weather, let us figure out some things by ourself, don't let them guess every villian or them introducing themself. It's Like the show is afraid of tension and suspense because they wan't to make it a kids Show! With the topics in the Story a Show for 12-13 years old would work better imo. Percy Jackson in a visual medium is always going to be more "violent" than the book: I would deal with that thought a PG-13-rating and not "toning down the story" because a.) kids, b.) Not enough run-time and c.) budget/expensive CGI (Percy saving Annabeth in the Tunnel of Love). If action is too expensive: Make Grover wear long trousers, we don't need to see his legs every episode and make the action scenes longer in exchange. I know Rick Riordan desperatly wants this to be a children show (age 8+ maybe), I'm not sure if the story isn't to dark for that ... And don't make things just to bei different from the movie! While I do agree that the actress for Anbabeths line delivery wasn't the best for a few times, I don't think it's that bad and I can live with that in the first season because she really shines in other moments, fits well with the trio and has a good banter with Scobells Percy (the Tunnel of Love scene was amazing for a 12 year old!). I actuallly really Like her character arc. I also think it sometimes IS the script giving her far too dialog-heavy, unnatural sounding, info-dumping dialog without flash-backs etc. to help (show don't tell!!!) like the Harry Potter movies did well. The whole trio/show looses some of it's spark in those scenes, they should try a voice-over/narratation from Percy for that. I also think that: We aren't used to seeing black female strong (and she is strong!), smart, somewhat stoic characters on television often. I think If she was white and blonde some would have less problems with her behaivour and see more of her vurnuable site (which isn't racist per See it is just us learning what to expect from certain Media characters). There are studies in how we perceive characters in media and we often start with a stereotype in our head, adjusting the characters behaivor etc. to that stereotype to avoid kognitive dissonanz (the "cute blond princesses" sass is charming, while it is rude/angry for the "strong black woman"), so I like that they start with the "strong black girl" stereotype slowly destroying the walls she has build around herself to project herself from getting hurt. It could actuallly lead to a very good portrayal of a three-dimensional black female character, that learns to loosen/open up, letting others in and allowing herself to be the 12-year old kid with feelings that she is and not a unbothered soldier that reacts a certain way because of her trauma. The idea of Percy showing her "real love" (platonic and romantic later on) that he got from his mother is very cute if you ask me and works. Their hug being a perfekt example of showing that she does care and needs human connections, she is just afraid to allow/show that (the panic in her eyes after she has hugged Percy? Perfect!). People may disagree with me, but like that she started so stand-off-ish, it makes the change more noticable and shows how we are formed by trauma/wrong ideas about our "worth" by our parents (umconditional love for Percy vs. glory/sacrafice/being strong and perfect, without a real Connection for Annabeth). I think there ist one think the show is lacking in generall: fun! Let them be 12-year old ADHD-kids! Let them joke more, laught together, talk about stuff that isn't Info-dumping or character background-Information! That's how we bond with the Harry Potter-Trio: who doesn't love it when Harry sneaks Up on Draco/Hermoine/Ron and starts the snow fight? The books is pretty funny too! The Problem here? Not enough run-time so I really need Disney to get it together! That sounds like i'm not liking the show, but I really enjoyed every episode so far -really loved 3+5 (I just really like the trio). Just think it could be better and honestly: Where the hell ist the Budget???

The absence of the whole plot with the pearls and the change with them being too late and failing the quest are kind of grating to me. Finding the pearls was such a huge part of the book and I don't think that their trip so far has been engaging enough to replace it. In the book, time doesn't move more quickly, it just doesn't pass like it does outside. Someone can enter in the 1970s and still be there, unchanged, in the 2020s. Here, they weren't distracted by the casino at all. Their time was taken up with looking for Hermes and talking to him. Even with Grover, he wasn't distracted by the casino, but by the possibility of finding Pan. There wasn't anything special about the casino, except for the time thing. If that hadn't been added, they would have literally left only minutes after they went in. And didn't Percy have about two weeks for the trip in the book, instead of just five days? We've seen so many good adaptations lately that it's severely disappointing to me that this one is so lacking. To me, at least.

All of you are so desperate for a good adaption after the movies, that you will settle for anything that has a modicum of improvement. Because Rick is so heavily involved in it's creation, you know that there's no chance you are getting another adaptation in the future. Rick isnt infallible. Rick isnt perfect. And this is Rick's first time truly HELPING adapt a TV show from his books. He isn't listed as showrunner or director, so he damn sure isn't making this show alone, despite his influence. There are an endless amount of possibilities as to how this show could've been adapted, even with Rick's help, but under a different teams of creators and even under a different company. Only reason I remembered it cause we have later characters mention it and is used as plot point and cause of the movie. I don't care for perl changes, it will make everything more dramatic for the finale. Saw from people who've seen the whole show already that last two episodes are amazing so I can't wait. Also saw report on runtime for first 2 episodes and it's already in top 10 shows, I really really hope we get new season, writers will have a chance to fix issues from s1 plus Disney will hopefully see that people care for this IP and give it more

Yet GoT managed to bring its far more comprehensive books, with a lower budget, to life in its early seasons. Yall want this show to be good so bad that you're deluding yourself. This book could've been adapted into a show by a much more adequate degrees. As terrible as the movies were, at least the Lotus Casino was fun. To the point were fans were crying for Poker Face to be included leading up to this episode. Rick himself even commented on the matter. If the movies could give this scene energy the show could've too. We have two adaptations of the Lightning Thief now. You do realize that under different writers and directors there is an endless amount of possibilities of how a book can be adapted right? You're settling for this version because you're desperate. Now that Rick has heavily involved himself there is no chance at a future, better adaptation. And every fan like you knows that. That's why you're grasping for what you can get.

The books are made for preteens. Therefore the show adaptation is also going to be made for kids ... That's not to say that adults CAN'T like it and relate to it. I know a BUNCH of people who read the books when they were 18+.... And they do seem to be enjoying this show adaptation as well. But it ultimately is a children's show, yeah. It does deal with SOME deep topics but again it's a show for kids and a book series for kids. 🤷‍♀️ It's okay if you watch it or read it and relate to it... but it's also fine if it doesn't interest you because you're not the target demographic.

But it doesn't treat me like one for reading it. An even better example would be the Percy movies! I felt they were acceptable "Young Adult" fare. Yet watching this show has a completely different tone, like that of old Saturday morning school dramas like Saved by the Bell, but aimed directly at kids not in High School yet. It's Disney. I understand that they do that kind of thing.

@@funkyd3321 I mean I'm 27. I read the books when I was around 12. I never said that adults can't enjoy the show... because I DON'T hold that opinion. As a 27-year-old, I'm enjoying the show. I do generally like darker stuff with more adult material but since I KNOW the source material... I'm liking it. I'm taking it for what it is and fully acknowledging that it is indeed a children's show and so of course it doesn't delve as deep into the darker topics as other shows that I've watched do. It's fine as a kids show. Not necessarily amazing or groundbreaking but it's alright. It's better than the movie adaptation, IMO, and that's really all I was expecting going in. It's fine if you liked the movie. They were much more actiony than the show... There have been a couple of reviews on KZread who have enjoyed the more fast-paced action of the movies... But I dislike the movies for other reasons than the pacing and action. 🤷‍♀️ As I said it's FINE if you aren't connecting with it as an adult... You definitely are not alone in that. But they're absolutely ARE plenty of adults who are enjoying it and who have read the source material as adults. So it's not exclusively for children... As clearly some adults are enjoying it, the show and the books. But the Target demographic is children... So obviously children are going to connect MORE with it and relate more to it and potentially enjoy it more than adults will. It's cool that you enjoy One Piece though I know a bunch of adults who also enjoy it. I have never been hooked in by what I know of the story... That's why different genres exist... Because different people find different things interesting... I've ALWAYS been very drawn to supernatural stories of gods and demons and magic and fantasy... That's not everybody's cup of tea.

@@AnxietyRat I think the books were darker than the show. They mellowed the show so much. There's some gritty stuff in the books, especially in the later parts. They already excluded some things like softening Gabe's character. They'll probably also avoid the subject of Gabe hitting Sally as was discovered by Percy at the end of the first book. Sally straight-up murdered Gabe with Medusa's head, so let's see if they will include that or keep it out as well.

The ramp is absolutely unnecessary and I wished they use all these unnecessary shots for more actions in the casino. In the books they just walked out and that's all. They could have Hermes call up a valet or something after they exit if they really want to do the fast travel car thing.

First book one, she isn't stoic, she makes a lot of jokes mostly making fun of percy, she goes red when she sees luke, she's afraid of spiders, she loves architecture a lot, she's also smart, brave and cares a lot about her friends. Now show Annabeth she's smart, brave, kinda likes architecture and cares about her friends. Now can you spot the difference, firstly like 90 percent of women characters nowadays she doesn't have any negative traits, they also don't really talk about her dreams. So yeah i don't see how she's better then the book version. Unfortunately she's just another "strong femele protagonist" but with a little more heart. Sry for the long essey😂

I've read all the books and have been a fan of this series since it came out, and Nerdy is right. The pacing and writing, even sometimes the editing, of the show is OFF. It's either not snappy enough when it needs to be or too snappy when it shouldn't be. For example, his fight with Miss Dodds was WAY too quick and edited oddly. While the fight with the Minotaur was drawn out and shot in a way that took the tension out of the scene. This episode too, he's right about the casino. There are ways to make those scenes snappy, by adding in area shots and showing the people around them having fun and being high on the flowers, but they just didn't and that's an issue.

@sonicsean34 Exactly, that should have been MUCH quicker, like 30 to 40 seconds less of that scene, and his mom should have been nearly frantic with how she was talking, same as Grover. Percy being confused and slow would make sense, but for the tension to be there, the other two needed to act like there was more of a threat. Then she should have sent him away like she did and he got further before she started fighting. That way they could have inter cut her fighting and him running back the entire time instead of just having him standing there, watching. Him freezing and staring should have been reserved for her "death".
