It shows (to me anyway) that good art stands up to a live performance. If your "hit" includes 500 people playing in an orchestra and 120 back ground vocals re-mixed 3 times, your live performance will NEVER sound like this one did. Just awesome.

I think, THINK, it might be to do with him being self-conscious that one of his legs was shorter than the other. Notice how when he's not singing, he steps away and constantly moves at an angle, as opposed to standing up straight? It's also why Matt moves over at the end, it's not just to use a different mic, it's to draw attention away from Rivers. If you watch their performance of Say It Ain't So on Letterman circa '95, Rivers has a leg brace on from an operation to correct the length. He's very self-consicous about, so again, Matt is doing a lot of exaggerated movements that he doesn't always do. I only conclude this because I don't think he started changing the way he held his guitar years later, I think it occured pretty much during the tenure of this 'original' (most well-known) line-up, pre-'97.

All the guitar tones and awesome riffage make it quite unique. I think it's all the digital processing that goes into making tracks sound tight and clean nowadays. I do appreciate the tone they've got here, real dirty and gritty sounding almost like classic rock or southern rock.
