I don't think people really understand why Kurt and Nirvana was such an important thing. Kurt represented every kid who was bullied, who was different, who was gay, who didn't want to conform. He wasn't a punk icon, he was all of us who didn't fit in. We didn't want to buy the best sport shoes, we didn't want to be heroes, we didn't want to be thanked for our service we just wanted to be. We just wanted to hang out with our friends, listen to records and play video games without being given endless shit. We were cool just being. Kurt Cobain is my hero for accidentally allowing us to just be who we are. Thank you Kurt.

Kurt was an LGBT supporter and a pro-choice advocate. Some of the money he makes goes to organizations that support pro-choice and he was sent death threats by "pro-lifers". Reminds me of what that British comedian said after hearing a man enters an abortion clinic with a gun on his hand "how can you be pro-life and shoot someone?"

I love how the sloppiness of Nirvana was literally part of what made them so good. Kurt messes with the lyrics, the bass cuts out, Krist hits himself on the head with his bass and runs off stage, and Kurt kicks him in the ass... What else? Who cares? It's a great performance anyway.

Dude that's just lazy, there's LOADS of great bands playing today. Get off your couch, throw away those rose-tinted glasses you're looking at the past in, and go see some gigs FFS. I grew up with this too (I was in my 20s during the 90s) so I'm no youngster. Believe it or not I saw Nirvana play, the one and only time they toured Australia, and rather disappointingly they were TERRIBLE. Kurt was so off his face he spent half the gig lying on his back with inane screeching noises coming from his guitar, and they tried to play too loud and overloaded the PA system TWICE. Dave was a monster on the drums but otherwise it was pretty average. There's heaps of great bands just killing it live today, the music industry has changed so much now that playing gigs is pretty much the only way a band can earn an income so they give it EVERYTHING. That and audio tech has improved so much now that pretty much every band you see sounds fantastic. Stop living in the past and go experience NOW.

As a 17 year old I’m 1991 when I first ran into Nirvana, the thing that struck me the most about their music was how they would mix these melodic verses with powerful choruses. It was like sweet and salty. It was like hot and cold. It was like smooth and crunchy. The contrast made each song so much better.

"In Bloom" is a perfect example of that. The chord progression in that song is unique. Not to mention that the guitar "solo", while being purposely abstract and probably intended to be noise instead of a solo, works and fits perfectly. He might not have been the ideal guitarist in terms of technicality or tightness, but I still feel like he put a lot of careful thought into the music he wrote.

@@danball3421 have you got the new Nevermind boxsets? That gig is included. I personally think the gig at Del Mar Fairgrounds their most on fire show they did during that period. The version of SLTS also is absolutely blistering and done at blinding speed and ferocity.

A legendary performance. I remember seeing this (probably) on a delayed telecast in Australia and had this recorded. Not sure if I still have the VHS tape, but at the time I replayed it pretty much every day for six plus months. It's a shame this video doesn't capture Dave Grohl at the microphone calling out "Hi Axl, hi Axl - where's Axl? Hi Axl!" because it was pure gold (along with Kurt's playing of Rape Me and Novoselic nearly taking his own head off. As far as performances go, this had everything.

Why was he calling out Axl Rose? Was there a beef between the bands back then? I'm not familiar with this.

@@chosen_remnant yes. Backstage Kurt made a joke like "Hey Axl will you be Frances's Godfather?" and he didn't respond and just pointed at Kurt & Courtney and mean mugged them. So Dave jokingly yelled "Hi Axl" a bunch of times after Krist stumbled off stage.

@@chosen_remnantwell, Nirvana refused to tour with Guns N’ Roses because Kurt believed they were sexist or whatever, so axl took it serious and started poking at Kurt and Courtney by saying stuff about their baby, and since they were both here at the vmas, that’s when Kurt tried to spit on axls piano but turns out it wasn’t his, it was Elton John’s and krist got into a fist fight with one of the band members.
