Understanding The Last Judgement - Seattle Talk

The traditional icon of the last judgement is a very complex image which is both the synthesis of Christian typology as well as an image of the eschatological finality of all things. It is basically an image of the structure of reality.
All the elements of the icon are analyzed in light of the structure of being and how we participate in its unfolding.
The image interpreted was painted by fr. Luke Dingman and can be purchased at Orthodox Images: www.orthodoximages.com/feasts_...
The talk was given as St-john Chrysostom Byzantine Catholic Church in Seattle.

    Brilliant! I was particularly struck by your description of Judgment in the eternal now -- accepting the host into oneself compresses time such that we are partaking in the birth, suffering, death, resurrection, ascent and return of Christ all at once. Luke 17:20-21 "The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you."

    Thank you for posting these talks. I find them immensely refreshing and invigorating. I spend so much of my time with my, "head in the clouds," that there is a sort of comfort seeing you trying to "get higher up." Mr. Pageau, I recently watched the movie "Mother,' and at the very least I would reccomend it to you. The film is absolutely BURSTING with symbolic and archetypal truths. I was honestly shaken by it. It got a terrible reception by the public, which I believe is in part due to the deteriorating relationship to the underlying transcendental reality that the story of the movie is so desperately trying to explore. I would love to hear how you think we can continue to bring the reality of the kingdom to those who have lost their sight. though I'm not a Christian per se, I do believe in transcendant experience, and I believe that it's our connection to the symbols, archetypes, gods, whatever you want to call them. that keeps us bound up with the principle that keeps us going - whatever that means. Again, thank you Jonathan. This guy appreciates you. :]

    This is the first time that I realize that the holy father Abraham is the symmetry to the holy mother Mary, being the ultimate human father, bringing forth the seed (pattern) that yields Christ's union with mankind, in the same way that the holy mother Mary is the ultimate human mother, bringing forth the flesh that yields Christ's union with mankind. With every new thing I learn about God's design for mankind's salvation, it becomes ever more beautiful in its fullness, completeness, and elegance. The beauty just doesn't end. Beautiful representation Jonathan!!! The perfect sacrifice is placed on the cross daily by all humanity within our individual relationship with our Creator. I am the thief on the right side, I am also the thief on the left side of my Creator. The character of each thief is being totally transformed into The Full Image of the mind of God, His full righteous character through His abundant love, His Passion for me within my relationship with Him. The perfect sacrifice (The Son of God) will do whatever it takes to bring the scattered remnants of me (the Left and the Right thief characteristics into the fullness of Himself. Complete, Whole Without Blemish. All Unrighteousness consumed by the Fire of His Passionate Love For Me. This is the final outcome of judgement for all mankind when all is said and done within each and every one of us; Because He Is The Perfect Sacrifice, The Only One Worthy Through Total Submission To The Will Of His Father’s LOVE For ALL Creation.

    I've been thinking about all the stories of sacrifice. It seems there is a story for nearly every permutation of possible sacrifice and they all foreshadow Christ. They weave together like an incredible web that's hard to untangle in fullness. Paraphrase: Abel and Cain. Brothers. Correct and incorrect sacrifice. Blessing and resentment. Cast out. Isaiah and Ishmael. Brothers. Seemingly incorrect sacrifice, turns to out to ve sacrifice. Blessing and resentment, but then redemption and blessing. Sacrifice of Isaac. Sacrifice of what is most valuable, but because the sacrifice is attempted, Isaac is saved. Joseph of Egypt. He's not sacrificed, in fact he's fawned over, which results in his sacrifice (opposite of Isaac). Joseph makes all the correct sacrifices, he's not blessed till the end. He becomes Prince of a foreign land. Lots of foreshadowing with testing his brothers, who find redemption. There's so many layers that come together in the end, I'm still processing it. Prodigal son. Correct sacrifice, incorrect sacrifice, like Ishmael the prodigal son returns and is blessed, but then his brother is resentful. Christ and Lucifer. Correct sacrifice, incorrect sacrifice. Blessing resentment. Cast out. Christ makes all the correct sacrifices, and doesn't get blessings. Most valuable sacrifice, which because it's made, he becomes Prince so the prodigal son (us) may return and find redemption. All the pieces come together. Nearly every single element in a story of sacrifice, points towards Christ, and is reflected in the story of Christ. I'd love to see your analysis on the stories of sacrifice if you haven't done one yet. The elements of correct sacrifice, forgiving each other our trespasses, and shouldering each others burdens are what being about heaven IMO. Incorrect sacrifices, resenting others their perceived trespasses, and not shouldering a load brings on weakness, nihilism, and hell.

    Thank you so much for sharing this early, this was fascinating. This is a bit off topic, so I understand if you do not address it here, but I think my comment was lost in the shuffle of a previous video. In previous videos, when you talk about Santa Claus existing, I think I understand what you mean. Obviously he has attributes, an effect on the world, some sort of ontology. He does, in fact, exist. My question is, do you think that Santa Claus exists in the sense that he has conscious experience? Or is he an unconscious being? When you make the jump from Santa to angels, and from angels to God, I feel like that is an important thing to clarify, as God surely has to be conscious in some way.

  • @JonathanPageau

    @JonathanPageau

    5 жыл бұрын

    I believe principalities have a form of consciousness and they have a form of will. We can understand this by analogy in how the consciousness of a nation could be said to culminate into its leaders, so a king must have a form of consciousness which is the consciousness of his kingdom. A king or a chief is the manner in which a group of people becomes conscious, but this can also be true of an invisible purpose. It is harder to see or to imagine when we think of the invisible principalities, the pure patterns, which guide and hold the world together, but the analogy is helpful to get a glimpse of that.

  • @MatthiasPendragon

    @MatthiasPendragon

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@JonathanPageau That makes sense. So if a nation gains conciousness (or maybe is "brought together") by a king, then God as the cosmic king, gives the universe (or rather, the people in it) consciousness. It isn't that people give God consciousness, but rather that he is both the source and the fufillment of all the patterns we see, including our awareness. Hopefully that isn't inane rambling, I'm still trying to get my head around the language and concepts.

    This is all quite interesting and I really apprechiate your insights on the matter, you are a true expert in things like that, but by having seen all your videos, there is one question that comes to my mind every time. Who were those guys that made those images in the first place? Well, I mean there is an obvious consistency in the symbolic language for thousands of years and I guess the symbols were also older than the bibel itself, so there must be some kind of an ongoing tradition by which this kind of knowledge was transmitted to a whole lot of people. Considering that in those images there is also quite a lot of profund psychological wisdom codified makes it even more mysterious, at least for me. See, in order to be able to transmit this kind of knowledge in such a symbolic way, you not only have to understand it, but you also must be able to turn in back into this kind of "green language" to transmit it further through time, if you know what I mean. Where are those people and why they never became a part of our present culture since they obviously knew a whole lot more for a way longer period of time compared to any other person at any given time in history and even modern psychology only slowly approach concepts presented in this ancient symbols. Where did they come from, where did they go? I have a hard time to imagin some kind of priest dictating a skilled craftsman what he should paint or build since those images are so detailed that the creator itself must be the one who had this knowledge already and a simple priest, speaking in front of the curch all day simply does not fit here as the primary source. What do you think?

And they craft the proces it self in the end of the iconostas(one monk reding from a book and two man working in the wood):)). the craftsmen did not know how to write but while they where making the iconostatis(3-4 years)they lived with the monks(as the monk do) every day and easly get the stuf that was read to them. see..:))) perfect balance between rigth fate and rigth practise

    I don’t think they were consciously created by people who completely understood what these images represent, rather the symbols are part of a large collection of stories that were passed down generation by generation through the oral tradition which separated the wheat from the chaff over time. When everything is passed down orally over a long period of time certain things are obviously forgotten, so over time only the most profound and insightful stories and symbols are the ones that are remembered and built upon. So the whole symbolic structure began like a block of marble, a large, more dissonant collection of stories and symbols, that was slowly carved out and eventually fine tuned over many generations of distillation and refinement as the stories are retold, reimagined, or forgotten countless times over. In this way I think the apparent genius of them is not due to any individual participants understanding of the whole picture but the participation of several generations which together have forged, I would say largely unconsciously, a coherent symbolic structure. In other words their complexity isn’t due to an elite, enlightened group of people that have since disappeared but the result of thousands of years of slow development in the consciousness of each generation. By the time the structure and stories were written down they had already reached a high level of complexity, and the newly accessible medium of the written word and iconography opened up more frontier for further refinement.

    @@Schixotica Ah, of course! Totally forgot about some kind of study done to figure out how to transmit knowledge through time the most reliable way and they found that if you have a story that resembles archetypical figures, the story itself changes in details and content, names and places over time, but the archtypical symbolism in its structure stays the same, even if the story cross cultures. That make sense, like if you say the wheat seperates from the chaff over time and those stories remain which retained the most consistent symbolism that have the strongest impact on people, like a self preserving mechanism. And it also make sense that those stories get refined over time to come even closer to the perfect archetypical appearence. Thank you for reminding me there!

    Jonathon- A passage which has always struck me from Revelations- "And I saw a great beast rise up out of the sea, and upon its heads were written the names of blasphemy. " Could you give a quick interpretation of this? Is the beast with blasphemy on its head a representation of a demonic inverted order? The fact that it rises from the sea, is that representative of an imposter-type hierarchical order? And the multiple heads with written names of blasphemy? That one's got me a little stumped.

  • @JonathanPageau

    @JonathanPageau

    5 жыл бұрын

    I think you have the right direction. The names of blasphemy on the heads of the serpent out of the sea is an image of that inverted order which takes form just before or even as the rising floods come. The multiple heads in this case is the absence of unity, so it is multiplicity manifesting in a way that attempts flip things around, make multiplicity itself the top of the hierarchy, an upside down pyramid and so the names can only be the names of blasphemy which is to desacralize the sacred, the "abomination in the holy place". Democracy is a form of this.

    Nice one, thanks Jonathon. If it is the same abomination that is mentioned in Daniel, 'Daniel 7:19-20 - Then I would know the truth of the fourth beast, which was diverse from all the others, exceeding dreadful, whose teeth were of iron, and his nails of brass;' then the inversion of the 'nobility' of the metals, from the dream of Nebuchadnezzar, would be in tune with that, Iron on top, brass in the middle, etc.

    What I don't understand. Explain the Iron on top, brass in the middle, etc part. I get what you and Jon are saying about the beast coming out of the sea, and all that, but how did you correlate that with Daniels 7:19-20. I'm out of study for a few years now.

    In Nebuchadnezzar's dream there is a statue which is a symbol of heirarchy. It has a head of gold, then below that silver, then down to the baser metals ending in iron. The beast in Daniel seems to be an inversion of that order, just as the multiplicity at the top of the beast in revelations is a reflection of inverted heirarchy.

    I could never figure that one out, sorry! As for "heaven", the final image in Revelations is a new heaven and a new earth, a cosmic structure with a city and a garden in the center of all of this. This is an existence which involves the bodily as well as the heavenly, it is not a denial of the body and of the earth.

    That question will haunt me now! RE: Heaven - if I follow correctly, you mean to say at 30:10 that 'heaven' as afterlife for your soul when you die - separate from the eschatological image of new heaven and earth (paradise) and bodily resurrection - is a misunderstanding of the Christian doctrine? I think you need to do a video on the afterlife and bodily reincarnation...

    In Catholic theology we have purgatory as in Revelation nothing impure can enter the kingdom of God. In his First Letter to the Corinthians 3:10-15, St. Paul says that a Christian life can have its foundation only in Jesus Christ, but that on that foundation, the life we go on to live may be more or less worthy, as it’s constructed of works that conform more or less perfectly to Christ, or not at all. Much of what we do is unworthy of our Christian vocation and so, won’t survive judgment. Employing the important biblical typology of fire, Paul says that, “If anyone’s work will remain, which he has built up, he will receive a reward; if anyone’s work will be burned up, he will suffer loss. He himself, however, will be saved, but, in this manner: as through fire” 1 Corinthians 3:14-15. So in the Orthodox icon it's showing no fire at the Last Judgement only snakes and ladders. In regards to left handed yes it's a sign of disorder as the Catholic priests and nuns used to slap people with left hand writing but didn't slap my hand hard enough because I am still left handed. Left handed people are clumsy but I was pretty good at sports. But I am considered Ambidextrous people who have the ability to use both hands with equal dexterity. Coming from the Latin word ambidexter, which means “right-handed on both sides,” ambidextrous describes someone who can use either hand to write, swing a bat or catch a ball. Now that I think about I was contemplating whether to join the Catholic priesthood in my younger years and I bet the Bishop would have said Use your right hand for the Catholic Mass ritual as the right side is God. Right hand of the Father.

    Pray about it and listen to the answer. You should know by now that real Christians are found in all denominations. There are as many Christians in name only among Catholics as there are among Protestans or other religious groups. I'm Orthodox and will not change it. But see if your church gives you the fullness of experience or if it's just a hobby club.

    Jonathan, it is always best to refer to Our Lord as Lord Jesus, it's more personal. Referring to Him as "Christ" is referring to Him by a title (Christ-Krystos-Messiah-Anointed One). It makes Him an impersonal abstraction. Lord Jesus needs to be made immediate and personal. People need Him. If this is not the focus , people will not be drawn. Steve

    No you don’t get it. In Middle Eastern and Japanese cultures, and traditional cultures throughout the world, the casual use of first names is discouraged. Also, St Paul teaches that the name of Jesus/Yasu//Yeshua/Iesous/Iesu is the Name above every name. It is treated the same as YHWH, with reverence. This is why Orthodox speak of Christ/Messiah/Al Masih or the King when we refer to Him. We are showing proper respect.

    Christ sits within the upper matriarchal circle of the Ankh, the upper half of the Christian cross. Represented by the snake in many creation myths, the living cycle has a trinity of a beginning (head), a middle and end (tail). As above so below, the sexes were created in the image of God's cyclical nature where Mother is the head and opening to all beginnings and Father holds the tail to all endings (through which the sowing of seeds allow for the next great matriarchal rebirth).The joining of the two (symbolized by the Ouroborus or ritualized with the marriage ring) is the ecstatic union needed in assuring the creation and continuation of new life cycles. To speak of the present day God as "Our Father" is simply an admission to our collective positioning within the bigger cycle. As all Mother's have direct experience with the creator quality of birthing, so is the direct experience of rebirthing the divinity within (baptism) belong to that which is matriarchal. (John 3, verse 3-8) . In spiritualy matriarchal times, illumination could be seen as wearing the false beard (ancient Egyptian funerary death mask) as the supreme balanced state of self knowing; high cyclical awareness of both our upper matriarchal half and the lower patriarchal half (compared with a mini lower body replica, an "as above so below" tail end beard extension); in full recognition of her civilizational Underworld; her inevitable cyclical destiny. To carry the Ankh was perhaps to symbolically carry that upper and lower understanding. As the upper matriarchal womb symbolised the fertile birthing of civilization, below, the now Christian cross is carried to place emphasis on the lower "End Times" Father principle of the great cycle. Ganesha, the elephant headed Hindu diety, displays a cyclical head to trunk symbolism and points to the Mother head of his matriarchal elephant society. A whole temple was dedicated to the ancient Egyptian goddess Hathor, who is the matriarchal "Uterus" personified. kzread.info/dash/bejne/fGShktyDg6ise5M.html

    🚨🐍🚨 [5:19] O people of the scripture, our messenger has come to you, to explain things to you, after a period of time without messengers, lest you say, "We did not receive any preacher or warner." A preacher and warner has now come to you. GOD is Omnipotent.* [5:15] O people of the scripture, our messenger has come to you to proclaim for you many things you have concealed in the scripture, and to pardon many other transgressions you have committed. A beacon has come to you from GOD, and a profound scripture. [5:16] With it, GOD guides those who seek His approval. He guides them to the paths of peace, leads them out of darkness into the light by His leave, and guides them in a straight path. [5:17] Pagans indeed are those who say that GOD is the Messiah, the son of Mary. Say, "Who could oppose GOD if He willed to annihilate the Messiah, son of Mary, and his mother, and everyone on earth?" To GOD belongs the sovereignty of the heavens and the earth, and everything between them. He creates whatever He wills. GOD is Omnipotent.
