I was born as a de facto male sort of something, in other words intersex. In addition to male parts I have female bits. Even though most of those female bits were removed over my life time. The one female bit that couldn't be removed was that part between my ears. So I spent the majority of my life trying to be a male, I've even been married for most of my adult life. Fortunately my spouse accepts me for who I am because she saw first hand the pain I suffered from all the surgeries and the chemotherapy from a form of testicular/ovarian cancer. She has seen me cry and cry in pain. Not just physical pain but emotional pain too. I really embrace the TED speech with all my spirit.

Can someone help me out? I don't understand why we continue to gender traits like this? Surely we all want to work towards a gender blind society rather than people with more traditionally feminine characteristics identifying as women and vice versa? Does this not solidify gender stereotypes and potentially opress people more?

Reading the thoughts from the replies has been interesting. I don't fully approach Killermann's notions, however they are needed at this time. Why? We need more awareness, more compassion. more laughter. more love. Trolling on here about hating men is limitting. I suggest you read his book and then come back with your discussion. I love makeup and hair and "feminine" things so much and I was assigned female at birth. but I dont feel like a girl I feel like I am more of a boy or neither. and I have short hair and I have a "man mind set" as some people like to say. but in general I am such a mix of feminine and masculine that some people get confused. so everyone just decides to call me she and act like I am a girl because that's what I was assigned and because it's easier for them because they would be confused. but they don't understand that just changing they way they treat me will make my life better and won't negatively effect their lives at all. I just wish from a young age people were taught about gender and respecting other people.

I was not expecting poetry. That and the message in it, would have been enough proof, but then there's the mention of _The Lion King_ and the wisdom of Socrates throw in at the end there, adding to the evidence of an awesome person. Very nicely done, Sam Killermann.

I absolutely adore this. Not only because he goes on to prove how a lot of societies are scared of difference and what it "may" bring. But what will actually come of freedom of thought about this sort of stuff? Change, equality, creativeness? Or some people not understanding- but we don't know because society hasn't allowed creative thinking or freedom of individuality. While I am happy with what parts I've been born with, I'm also happy to know that it does not define a person. A person shouldn't be limited to such that makes up who they are just by if they've got a penis or a vagina. Those are just minor things in which play a part of the reproductive system and shouldn't interfere much of their own thoughts and realizations. We're all humans, we're all different and I think it's about damn time we accept everyone's differences for what it is, instead of what it is not.

Good on you for sticking with this discussion for as long as you did.

I could try to revoice this to my classmates during philosophy class, but apparently, it's not as easy to be taken seriously when you're a 15 year old girl, and a self proclaimed feminist.

How is this making the world a better place? How is confusing children into thinking they were born with the wrong genitalia helping the world? This speaker is intellectually assassinating the minds of children. Somehow this speaker is trying to make self-expression a topic about gender. When the two are barely related. The speaker builds his argument for gender expression based on his own assumptions of what is feminine or masculine. When in reality it is not gender expression; rather it is only identity(Biologically male or female) and expression. Identity and expression are barely related to each-other. Two different topics that he tries to merge as one based on how he has stereotyped men and women to act or express themselves. The speakers close-mindedness is why he confuses gender with a topic barely related to gender; expression. It harms children by confusing them about whether they were born in the right bodies or not. An you wonder why suicide rates are high for people that are confused about their gender. This is cruelty, and not making the world a better place. It's making it a confusing place for children, thinking God has accidentally given them the wrong bodies. Repent and trust in Jesus Christ so that you can see the truth instead of believing the lies/confusion about gender.

I'm so happy she has, so I have been doing as much research to understand all the complexities. So that I may be conscious of the things she goes through & others. Gender fluidity is not about making boys girly or making girls masculine. That's just as bad as enforcing gender stereotypes. Not everyone is extremely masculine or extremly feminine. The pressure to conform to society's version of gender often means sacrificing abilities and strengths.

Very good speech in terms of neutrality. It's good that it made clear distinction between facts and ideals, because it's a big problem people have when they argue on gender. Humans in their imperfection will judge each other regardless of what the societal norms are, and no amount of changing society or idealism will ever fix that. What will help it, though, is furthering human knowledge and understanding of it. And this does that well.

This was really good. It helped me understand gender so so much better and clearer.

This just hits on so many points and is oh so fabulous. A definite great way of explaining what needs to be said.

Bright, funny, and well done. Made me question which parts of me are masculine and feminine.

It's not black and white, it's a damn rainbow! You don't know where one color starts and the other ends, they're fluid, but can't exist w/out the other. :D I'm keen on checking out this book as well.

So why is a sex change called gender reassignment surgery if gender is a nonphysical thing? I have a trans male friend and a trans female friend and I just have a hard time relating to the problems they encounter regarding their gender. I just have a hard time wrapping my head around it; probably in part because I never cared to understand gender because I never identified gender. I never thought to myself, "I am a man. I identify as a man. Therefore I dress and act like a man." It's always, "I have a penis. He has a penis. She doesn't." I don't know what it means to think "I am a woman, even though I have a penis" because I never understood woman to mean anything but a biological female. I guess gender just seems like a redundant concept to me because I never thought "You are a woman, therefore this is your role."

How about "This is the role you choose to play, therefore you are a man/woman"? Also, here in the U.S., we call it SRS, or Sex Reassignment Surgery, which is more accurate.

This is a simple and short introduction to expanding our thoughts on gender. It is meant for people who have little to no exposure of the topic which is why its so simplified.

This is great! I'm a transsexual myself and I'm really considering showing this to my friends so they can understand better. Everybody in the world should see this.

as justlikeabee said, do it anyway, there is a good chance that sharing these ideas can save someone's life.

So many opinions and facts being thrown around. I don't really know where I stand. I want people to be accepting. I want people to be themselves and be happy. There are problems with both sides presented. Traditional thinking and new age thinking are both flawed. Maybe we should present both options to kids and let them play with whatever toy or wear whatever color they like. Whatever will fix the suffering of confusion and feeling out of place will do. It should be addressed.

The modern Dr. Seuss. I was wondering if he was doing that on purpose. So glad it was part of it. :D

How exactly did he disparage traditional masculinity? If you can make that argument, then we can easily say traditional femininity was attacked as well. In any case, he seemed to be neutral regarding each end of the spectrum (or spectrums as he put it).

i have watched 100rds of videos and talked to so many on what gender identity is and all i can gather is your all taking something so simple and turning it into something so complicated that it has lost its meaning entirely and your now trying to redefine it all, for no reason. basically everyone is saying that male and female roles are wrong and no one should be confined to stereotype roles of birth, true. but from there, all these labels to define and categorize every single degree of expression of someone self identity is just overkill ridiculous self indulgence. if we just fight to kill the stereotype roles and make it norm to be and act and do as you please that makes you happy and in no way hurts or effects others negatively. these labels make no sense and just hurt everything. if your going to hate on me then move on, if your going to offer real advice then i will be grateful to listen and learn. thank you.

That's part of the reason why gender neutral bathrooms are not a good idea. No urinals? Come on. Look, solo rooms make sense for gender neutral but not communal. There are just too many problems and inconveniences for both males and females. Why accommodate for a few and shaft the many?

Not gonna lie, this kinda opened my eyes, because I always thought I was a girl and I grew up thinking I was a girl. Yet, I did boy like things. I wrestled with my cousins, I played video games with my brother, and I played Magic the Gathering with my father. All things a girl wouldn't normally do. Yet, I did. I remember one day in the 4th grade, another classmate (female) came up to me and asked me why I played more with boys than I did girls. I didn't find their type of play as fun and I wasn't really comfortable with it. From that day, I questioned if whether or not I was truly female. This speech helped me realize that it's okay to not follow a specific stereotype you appear to be to others. Do what makes you happy.

I think I don't quite get it yet. Shouldn't there be no genders at all instead of many many different ones? If gender defines an outline that we have to fit in (play by the script) but we feel bad while doing it because not everybody alligns with that script, that's destructive and bad for the personal development. That's why we move away from just male and female, right? I don't have to be manly all the time, like the speaker said, just because I have a penis. But if we have many different genders defined, don't we still define the roles people should fit in? Shouldn't we theoretically have a unique gender for everybody then that changes all the time depending on the development of the individual or just abolish gender alltogether?

This is a great Tedx talk. As someone who has recently (past ten years) experienced teachers teaching the stereotypical boy/girl. And I’ve always been against it. Everyone should be in my opinion.

You know the more vitriolic you get the more evidence you provide to support my assumptions about your stature. And as for suffering from the Dunning-Kruger effect, you actually made me laugh. I don't think a college scholarship chemistry student would qualify as unskilled. Internet trolls on the other hand probably would.

How many labels do we need before we start making up new ones to distract from the support of actual people who suffer from gender dysphoria? When does it start just being a game for teenagers on tumblr wanting a new trivial label for themselves?

If some 14 year old on tumblr wants to identify as a demigender otherkin because he has a vivid imagination, that distracts from actual trans people who suffer from gender dysphoria. Now you tell me, how many nonbinary genders do we need? More than 3-4 is just vanity for childish people who want to feel special. In many cases they aren't trans, they're just imaginative young people who get wrapped up in certain tumblr communities, and do not need the same medical attention and sympathy of actual trans people who suffer and need to be taken seriously. Think about people other than yourself, and realize that just because you are trans doesn't give you the final say on this matter.

Otherkin is not a gender, it is irrelevant to the discussion. And that's cool and all, and you're welcome to your own (albeit wrong) opinion on the topic, but consider this. A lot of people grow into their identities, many people do not have a singular aha moment and then reroute their life accordingly. Many nonbinary identities are useful for people to ease themselves into a gender/sexuality that feels more correct for them, as navigating gender identity is not always an easy task. Also, more than 90% of people who transition are happier post transition, and a large chunk of the people who aren't have their displeasure related entirely to interpersonal relationships, ranging from verbal harassment, to threats, to abuse and violence. When you try to make boxes of acceptable and unacceptable gender identities, you play directly into the hands of an innefective and often malicious group of medical and societal gatekeepers, who constantly look for reasons to deny transgender people (yes, even those who have intense dysphoria) medical treatment. Pre-transition dysphoria should not be a medical requirement for transitioning, because medical boards constantly put up new hurdles for what dysphoria entails. These include what people want out of their bodies and fashion choices. There are countless instances of trans women being denied medically nessecary treatments because they refuse to wear a certain amount of makeup or wear dresses/skirt, and they are called off as "fakers". This isn't because of nonbinary identities, this is because of the people behind the rules themselves, and the only way more nonbinary identities will ever hurt me, is through proxy of those rule makers. Your points aren't the worst I've seen, but your target is far off.

SleepyDreamland +SleepyDreamland Trans women and men are not denied medical treatment because they do not qualify as looking like their expected role. They are denied medical treatment because they are not trans; they do not have sex dysphoria. Why medically transition if you are comfortable in and with your body? In my country you must have sex dysphoria to medically transition because that is what makes up transsexualism. I fail to see these so called 'nonbinary' identities anything other than gender nonconforming people. There are actual nonbinary people out there who suffer physical dysphoria, which I fully support and believe needs medical recognition, but these gender nonconforming people are not nonbinary. They are gender nonconforming, using a nonbinary identity, who believe they are not either gender or both because they are both masculine and feminine.
