In this tutorial I go over the basic layer modes I use the most and demonstrate how they work and when to use them.

This was soooo helpful. So many beginner tutorials will use multiply and overlay layers without ever explaining what they actually do. Thank your clear explanations with excellent examples. It's a fantastic piece too!
Excellent. Yours is the first video about blending modes which actually shows for what purpose the modes can be used. Most other videos are just demonstations where the author randomly clicks through the blending layer modes and hope that that will produce a 'tutorial'.
"With multiply you multiply." Oh now I get it.
Another helpful video, so much content in such a short period of time, keep up the great work!
You have a wonderful way of explaining the process. Just subbed!
Wicked painting and insightful video. Thanks man.
This is literally the most helpful thing ever thank uuuu
OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH you helped me out with shading 😭🙏🏾
Thank you so much for all of your super informative and well explained videos. And for not being greedy wanting to sell something, just sharing art and knowledge with the world and creating opportunities for people. My brother bought me an iPad Pro probably over a year ago now to get into digital art and make use of my capabilities. And I've tried at different times, drawing as well as trying to learn, and never quite felt able to really be able to do what I want until finding your videos. Now it's time to find out where I can take this!
Thanks Austin, you are quick on these! I can tell I still have a ton to learn about Procreate and it's different uses. Whew!
Thank you so much for the wonderful tutorial video. I’m new to iPad Pro my self, I’ve only had it for 3 months now and I love digital art but didn’t know it can do these things. I was wondering if you can do a video of layers and how to cut image and add to another background
Most useful and clear explanation of Procreate blending modes anywhere. Thank you!
Thanks for the video. I wasn't 100% clear on all of these modes.

Daniel Sallee I didn’t even know they existed haha.
Thank you for explaining this!!! You are the best!! Step by step and able to follow and understand!!
i been using overlay all the way wrong. thanks so much!
great video! It helped me a lot to understand layer modes better. It would be nice if you do explain the other layer modes, which you had skipped. More tips how to make layer modes more useful could also be great.
Good stuff man, thanks for posting
very useful information. thank you. also, great painting!
This was fantastic!!! Thank you so much! Very thorough.
Thanks so much I was wondering how to use these so thanks 🙏
Thank you soo much for the helpful video!
super insightful. Thank you
Very helpful.
I must not have the same procreate is this on the iPad pro I don’t have all these layers any suggestions
Super helpful, thanks !
Thank you so much!!!
Awesome, thank you so much 😊
Great video.
Hi, a question about layer. All of suddent, one layer is totally dark after I unintentionally touched something,my work is totally lost. Do you have any ideq if this could be restored? Thanks!
I was wondering for shading, how do you decide which color to add with the gray? Is it always grey mixed with blue and set to multiply? Or can it be gray mixed with any color? Thanks

OhMyBooda don't think of your shadows as grey. Think of them as a darker cooler color of the object your adding shadow to. You don't always have to use multiply, it just simplifies things.

I see, much appreciated!
You answered questions that I had on previous videos here. So I'm sorry I bothered you with those. I've been using Multiply like it was the only layer option for years.:(
Great video... I’m still totally lost! Haha But I subscribed awhile ago and have watch a lot of your videos
Can someone help me? When I change the blend mode from Normal to anything else it doesn’t work. Nothing appears on the canvas, I can only see the “paint” on the layer miniature. How do I fix this?
I don't understand how you did the shadows with multiply.
Greta video. Helped a lot. Tha is for the upload
When you say “it multiplies the pixels”, what do you mean? What do you multiply? Hues? Brightness? RGB values?
THANK YOU!
You would be the first that I know of to actually make a painting tutorial for Gumroad (but, I haven't really been looking around that much in KZread). And what better painting can that be but none other than Indiana Jones. This is an awesome painting and I'm sure lots of us folks with Procreate would benefit from it. Give it a thought?
Thank you
what mode in Photoshop could be like the strong light mode
What program do you use

austin batchelor thanks a lot great video btw, love the channel
Blend modes dont look like this anymore in version 5.2.2 , I really like how they grouped them by effect. Now they are all over the place. Good tutorial anyways
Could you update this video due to all new updates procreated has launched lately?
Austin, what app do you use to make these awesome videos?
@austinbatchelor430

procreate
There's any way that I can NOT blend at all the layers? I just downloaded the app, and I'm trying to draw. But it's been very hard, because, even when a layer it's above other, they blend.

Mateus Maia that’s really weird...I didn’t come across that problem. It might be because your opacity is low?
@mateusmaia5117

@@march9177 actually yes! The problem was solved. I was using a pincel with low opacity, and that's why this weird thing was happening.
This was excellent, thank you so much
You had me at *burp*
Almost the same as in Photoshop! If I only had an iPad pro...

i use it with my ipad air! i think it’s compatible with a lot of ipads, i got mine like 4 years ago. there’s also procreate pocket for iphones
i commend you on your knowledge of layers in procreate, but the way you try to explain it to us is quite confusing.... instead of cramming it all into one video, losing us in the process, as your switching back and forth, can you simplify what you're trying to teach us by making tutorials that cover the different aspects of layers one video at a time? it would be so appreciated. by the way, you're a good artist!
I only undershand the multiply and for the rest brain not braining.
Good video but please stop saying “ok” after every other sentence.
Thank you
