I am a new knitter and this was so clear. You are a gem! Thank you Debbie.
Roxy here from South African. Your video finally got me to sort out my gauge. Thanks so much
Thank you for sharing this video. Now, I finally understand how important it is to knit the gauge first before starting a project. 😊
Thank you very much for your wonderful tutorial. I know the importance of knitting a swatch, but I am always too inpatient and start my project without one. I am now converted. I think it was something in your delivery that converted me.
December 2022: I decided to "get into" knitting...being burned out on quilting, decoupage & kumihimo! Bought some needles and a few skeins of yarn...watched a few KZread videos...saw that gauge was mentioned (whatever that is), and cranked out a few scarves and ear warmer headbands for Xmas. Using the knitting loom too. Easy peasy!!! Then I start looking around to do a sleeveless vest for myself...and I can't get away from gauge. It's like the plague! I watch a bunch more videos - and now I start thinking that I might run back to quilting. Atleast I don't have to test make a quilt 3 or 4 times to get the size right. Then I find your video on gauge. Excellent explanation...and I understand the method and reasoning perfectly...thank you. I'm still not crazy about having to knit a bunch of stuff, given my SLOW pace, just to get the right size...but I get it. And don't even get me started on regular knitting versus continental. What a disaster! I'm going to see if you have a video on that when I'm done here. Thanks!
Thank you for such an informative video. Truuly speaking I never understood the concept of gauge well. You cleared it for me and helped me get a better understanding if it.
Good morning Creative, thank you so much for helping me to understand the gauge width and length. Thank you so much for your teaching and sharing this. ❤❤
This is the first time I can actually say that I fully understand gauge! Thank you for your video- It was so thorough and helpful. BTW, I love your books :)
This was super helpful in understanding not only how to knit a gauge swatch, but how to adjust your gauge to make the project work. (It turns out I knit much tighter than most gauges call for, so I'll almost always need bigger needles...) Thank you so much for your clear explanation.
This is the first time I have ever been able to understand gauge!! Thank you!!
Excellent explanation...clear and to the point. I had no idea that being 1/2 stitch off could make such a difference! Thanks so much.
Excellent tutorial. Really made it a lot easier to understand the mysterious "gauge" in patterns! Thank you.
Excellent video! The first one I watched told me how to knit and count rows/stitches but did not show what to do if your gauge was off! This one, in contrast, was a comprehensive video with excellent delivery - you have a new subscriber! Many thanks.
Thanks so much for demystifying gauge and taking the fear of OMG what do I do now! This has been so helpful. Can't wait to start my new sock project without fear!
Finally, someone explains gauge so that it is understandable! Thank you!
Your video is really helpful. Finally I understand what is gauge....thanks 😊
This was such a huge help. Thank you! There are many videos on gauge but this is the first one that actually explained what to do when your gauge is different than what the pattern calls for.
Thank You Very Much 💕 I really understood what gauge is !
Thank you so much for your video and explanation of how to do the gauge swatch. It explained it so well!

Thanks so much Sandra - we're glad you thought so!
Very well explained! So good to know that stitch gauge is more important than row gauge. My row gauge was perfect and my stitch gauge way off after 2 swatches. I was stumped. Not anymore! Thanks so much!
Great explanation of gauge in knitting.
I made a swatch. The rows were accurate. The length was bigger by an inch or so. Thank you for telling me to change needles and that the number of rows is not as necessary as the width. I knew this but you reinforced my thinking.
Best explanation of gauge I’ve ever seen. 🏆 Thank you for not using metrics.
Thank you for explaining how to make a gauge before starting project in knitting, will try it.
Super helpful! I can't wait to implement these techniques for my upcoming project! :)
Wonderful and clear advice! Thank you!
Thank you very much, finally I understand it ! Great explanation! I love what you said in the end , yeah I have been thinking to go to dentist for a while and didn't go so far ,so you encouraged me to make an appointment! 🤗
I agree with Rebecca. First time I've understood gauge. You explained it so well!
Excellent explanation about gauge. I finally get it!! Thanks for making this video😀
Great explanation! Finally someone explained it well. Now it makes sense. Thanks you
Thank you very much for the tutorial! I had no idea what it was before watching and now I completely understand it! :)
It was the easiest explanation ever!THANK YOU!
Loved your tutorial. It has helped me so much with swatches. I never swatched before and luckily for me my knitwear turned out fine as they were mostly for kids. I now want to make sweater for my sister who has sent me some expensive yarn. I didn't want to take chances. I am glad I found your video. Thanks.
Thank you I fully understand how to make gauge. You are awesome teacher.

Excellent video! And, yes, like others have said, I LOVE your books! Just happened to discover your video this morning. I was wondering how I could "find" you after reading your books. BINGO!!! :) Looking forward to discovering more videos by you! :
Thank you kindly for your detailed video and excellent explanations. I will do my first swatch now. Again t.y ;)
Wow I just understood about the gauge....tq🥰🥰🥰
Thank you
Where can I buy a plastic gauge template like yours?
Keep doing what you are doing ?
thanl you i finally understood how to make a gauge 🤔❤
Finally I get it 😄
Excellent tut!! Wish I had found you when I started knitting a few yrs ago!! Thx... dukeofpurl on Ravelry
Aha! Thank you!!
Thank you for explaining gauge
What if you want to change the recommended yarn but keep the needle size? Please help me
Thank you for the explanation, now I understand why it is so important to do a gauge swatch. However, I am just starting a sweater on circular needles do I have to do the gauge swatch on the circular needles or can I do it on straight needles?
@cbugstudio
6 жыл бұрын
A gauge swatch done on straight needles should be close enough! Happy knitting!
Thanks for the video! Now I finally understand gauge! If you use thinner needles than recommended to get gauge, how will it affect the needle size of the ribbing you should use?
@cbugstudio
5 жыл бұрын
Hi Karen - if you decrease the size of needles for stockinette, you should also decrease the needles for the ribbed portion proportionally, i.e. if the pattern calls for knitting the stockinette portion with size 8 needles and rib with size 6 but you have to move down to size 7 for the stockinette to make the gauge work out, you'd move down to size 5 for the rib portion. Hope this helped!

@@cbugstudio Oh thank you so much for the advice! It all makes sense now! Can't wait to start knitting my sweater! ♡☆
thank u
Tusen takk (:
How do you gauge when pattern calls for two diff sizes of needles?
What do we do when a pattern doesn't specify a knitting gauge ? I take the one on the skein paper?
Thank you for your explanation! I have always struggled with guage!
Do you always knit a gauge in stockinette? Or do you do it in the pattern? If I make the pattern I find it hard to count the stitches.
This is awesome. I really like your video because you show what to do if it isn't what you need. I also appreciate that you discuss width vs height gauge. I WOULD, however, appreciate you using metric size needles because they're universal. I have no idea what a size 9 is. Aren't those arbitrary sizes different depending on what country you're in? Thanks!
@Alexin1derland
6 жыл бұрын
Oh, and I only mention the needles size because I'm not sure if going from a 9 to a 7 is a big difference or not. I can see the difference between, say 4.25cm and 4.5 cm in my head because it's based on regularly used increments.
@cbugstudio
6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your feedback Alexandra! A size 9 needle is 5.5 mm.
I'm about to tackle the Skully pattern in the book...another hint, don't use black lol!
I'm lucky using Japanese patterns on non dk yarn I'd just double stitch counts checking with measurement ruler. Dunno if that works 😕
this is really confusing. but what happens when you wet block it?
💖💖💖
How else can I obtain gauge? I want to knit a sweater but altering the actual pattern is intimidating.
I knit 2-3 gauge with a #3 and always thesame needle and my gauge is identical to the gauge asked. When I will take the same yarn weight and the same needle size, am I obliged to always done an other gauge??
@cbugstudio
5 жыл бұрын
You only have to change gauges if the pattern calls for it. If you get gauge following the ball band instructions, continue to do so! I hope this answered your question!
Well I want to use a larger yarn for a smaller needle
Help! My gauge with a size 10 wasn't right, so I went to a size 8, then 7, and finally a size 6.... I get the same size stitches on all of these needles (worsted wt).... anyone else ever heard of this??? One person tole me that in her experience changing the needle size did not change the gauge; it just changes the thickness of the fabric... .which is what I found.
I don’t understand how to knit second shoulder after knitting one shoulder doi ve to take another niddle an a yarn. I am a buggier
Do you knit socks ? Can you do a video in socks and shoes how to read the pattern too
"Thanks
What about crochet?
One assumes that you are talking in US sizes and this should be stated at the start of the video.
"Thanks"
Alright, alright......I'll make a new swatch until I get gauge. You're right. I don't want a sweater that doesn't fit.
This is so stressful because it takes me like 2 hours to knit a piece big enough
