Kaworu was the equivalent of Lucifer. He did not want to obey the divine order, but like any angel, he felt compelled to, so he asked to die, as struggling against your birth programming is excruciating. That makes me question if some of the angels, particularly the one who attacked the Magi and the ones who entered Asuka and Shinji's minds, could actually be attempting communication, albeit unsuccessfully because of their Eldritch nature. I mean, Rei tried as well (Yui knew she didn't belong here anymore because she actually liked the synchro she acquired). But she managed to get ambitious. We humans are truly scaredy cats. They had two angels in their possession (one of them Lilith, who fools the Angels for them to not find Adam) and yet they refused communication.

@@Breviparopus That doesn't make sense? I think the terminology you are looking for is that Kowaru has no sex. He isn't human, or a mammal or even an organism from earth so of course he doesn't have a sex - or at least a sex that falls under anything humans would understand. He absolutely does have gender though. Think about it. An alien being comes to earth, sees our customs and decides how to present and act. That is an alien performing what we call gender. Calling himself a boy, using the Japanese version of male pronouns and taking on the appearance of a boy. Kowaru definitely understands him self as a masculine yet delicate boy and because of that he must be a boy. Also we can't assume that he has a male body since he is an alien and he could just put on the appearance of a male body, it's not like anyone ever dissects him and goes " OMG THIS ALIEN HAS HUMAN ANATOMY AKIN TO A HUMAN MALE!". All of the facts considered, it doesn't really matter what labels we use to describe his character. Gay, bisexual, pansexual, queer, even transgender, it doesn't matter because the human experience is nuanced and could never be captured simply in words although I do think it is a misunderstanding to consider Kowaru a "genderless being in a male body". Unless you think that the entity Kowaru is non binary/agender and exists in a male form because of orders he was given. Which certainly would be a unique perspective but we see Kowaru on his own still performing as male so it makes the most sense to assume that he does somewhat perceive himself as a male.

This video is made entirely under the weird assumption that Kaworu is a socially inept idiot, which is false. Despite the fact that Kaworu has proven to be knowledgeable and emotionally intelligent, you maintain the unsupported idea that he is ignorant and naive. You even bring up that he is an idealized version of Shinji, but then you add that he is an “awkward, out of touch” idealized version. I find that really odd because an ideal human isn’t awkward and out of touch, and Kaworu isn’t awkward and out of touch either. From the moment we first see Kaworu, he is well informed and appreciative of Lilin culture. He loves singing and believes it to be the greatest achievement of Lilin civilization. He is highly aware of human psychology, as he is able to read Shinji perfectly and offer helpful advice. No human in the series was capable of giving Shinji the kind of advice Kaworu did because Kaworu wasn’t entirely human. He was able to speak of the human condition as an outsider, and he didn’t need to relate his own experiences and risk vulnerability like the human characters. I also think it’s important to acknowledge that Kaworu is a fan of Shinji. Which makes sense if you argue that Kaworu is an idealized version of Shinji. He knows about Shinji from Seele, and he thinks highly of him. He is fascinated by him. It wouldn’t have been the same with any other human. To me, their conversations never felt off or awkward. They just felt like conversations between people from two different backgrounds or cultures. Which is what I think Shinji and Kaworu’s relationship is all about, cementing the idea that humanity is united despite our differences. At the end of the day, while both Rei and Kaworu are angels, they are unlike any of the other angels, and they maintain important aspects of humanity like empathy and even the capability to LOVE. Early in the episode, when Kaworu meets Shinji at the gates, Shinji mentions needing to go home, and it immediately cuts to Kaworu smiling because of the mention of a home. He then tells Shinji that the fact he has a home will lead to his happiness. Right then, we become aware of Kaworu’s goal: a place where he belongs. Presumably, Kaworu has been indoctrinated his whole life by Seele with the idea that he is to reunite with Adam’s body and eradicate humanity because angels are the true successors to Earth. Kaworu feels that he can only fit in with angels and even tells Rei that they are the same. But because of his interactions and love for Shinji, Kaworu becomes burdened by his destiny and questions if humanity really needs to die. The line “You certainly go to extremes to avoid making first contact. Are you afraid of intimacy with others?” isn’t the first time that Kaworu is realizing Shinji’s problems and attempting to help him. It holds a different significance, which is to highlight Kaworu’s coming attempts at intimacy. He makes very emotionally intelligent statements about how it’s important for humans to connect in order to forget about their loneliness. Kaworu knows Shinji is lonely and initiates the intimacy that Shinji is so afraid to initiate by resting his hand on Shinji’s. You can’t claim that it’s an act of solidarity while also claiming that Kaworu isn’t speaking to Shinji on the same level, and it’s unreasonable to assume he’s unaware of the “sexual tension” it created. Kaworu doesn’t “naively believe” that he and Shinji were set up to sleep together, he’s attempting to initiate intimacy with Shinji, and when Shinji is apprehensive he attempts again by touching Shinji’s hand. Kaworu stating that he should be the one laying on the floor is not significant because he “never planned on sleeping in the same bed”, it’s significant because Kaworu is demonstrating an innate understanding of politeness and kindness in human culture. He is insisting that Shinji should be the one with the more comfortable place to sleep. Once again, Kaworu is emotionally intelligent enough to sense that Shinji has something on his mind and encourages him to talk about it. You keep claiming that he is awkward, yet you never substantiate that claim. Kaworu isn’t awkward or naive or stupid, he is a being capable of love, and he does love Shinji. That’s why he ends up rejecting his destiny and asking Shinji to kill him.

Hi, thank you for such a well thought out comment! It means a lot! I never claimed Kaworu was an idiot or inept. In fact Kaworu is an erudite individual. However, it's very clear that his communication style was designed to create an intentional separation between the two. While Shinji is personal with everything he says, Kaworu speaks as if he's teaching Shinji about human psychology. When I say Kaworu is awkward, I'm putting myself in Shinji's shoes and imagining someone speaking to me like that. Frankly that is not how people talk to each other, and if I was Shinji, I would have felt that Kaworu was either autistic or perhaps grew up in a very isolated environment. My “proof” for such awkwardness (which can't be proven because it's subjective) is that if somebody spoke to me like they were giving me therapy, I would think they were being awkward because they wouldn't be able to “code switch” to more vernacular speech. None of these things suggest Kaworu's ineptitude, they do however suggest that Kaworu does not think like a normal human being. I also don't believe Kaworu's awkwardness detracts from being an ideal version of Shinji. His moral character is ideal and the fact that he knows the root of Shinji's problems suggests a superior understanding of the human condition. As far as Kaworu being unaware of the sexual tension he creates, there are two ways from my perspective to look at it. Either A. Due to Kaworu's parasocial relationship he had with Shinji prior to meeting him, wants to illicit a sexual response from Shinji by holding his hand and confessing his love to him... Or B. He loves Shinji, and wants to connect to him within the bounds of his understanding of human relationships, thus creating a lot of unintentional sexual tension in the process. Option A to me, seems unrealistic because people don't try to butter someone up during their first meeting unless they were horny. To suggest Kaworu was horny and just wanted to see how far Shinji would go with him before he completed his mission would paint Kaworu in a negative light. So yeah, I don't make videos on a whim, I read the information and interpret it based on my personal life experiences. These are my personal reasons to reach the aforementioned conclusions. I pretty much agree with the rest of what you said.

Kaworu has a good heart and good intentions, but he definitely seems detached. It wouldn't be too far-fetched to assume that Kaworu has been isolated his whole life by SEELE, and his insular lifestyle has stunted his social development. I also agree with elements of what Klaxo said, however, I think using words like "idiot" was pushing it a smidge too far! By using hyperbolic language, it seems like straw-manning to me. From my personal perspective, you both have made good points! And I think the hand-holding was supposed to be comforting in a platonic way. When Kaworu says, "I was born to meet you," the kanji in the script implies romantic attraction. ❤

@@tonyfunk You're welcome! I might go looking for the tumblr post that reveals the script for Ep. 24. Hopefully, I can still find it somewhere! This is just my personal observation, but I've noticed a strong divide between men and women on this subject: Women are more likely to interpret Kaworu x Shinji as a homosexual/romantic relationship, and men are more likely to stick to the platonic interpretation. I think both are valid! I'm actually a Kawoshin shipper (I'm female), and I've done multiple internet searches on this topic. IMHO, Shinji is bisexual - he blushes so hard when he sees Kaworu, and I think the audience is supposed to ascertain that Shinji is bi-curious. Kaworu, on the other hand, is asexual, but that's just my personal opinion. I think Kaworu is romantically attracted to Shinji, but he doesn't experience sexual attraction. So maybe Kaworu is "homoromantic asexual", or something along those lines (look up "Split Attraction Model" for more info). And I think Kaworu is protective over Shinji, so there's definitely some parental love mixed in! I mean, Kaworu has lived multiple lifetimes, so he's effectively Shinji's father or parental figure (watching over him like a mother would). It would also explain why Shinji says, "You're just like my father," in Thrice Upon a Time. I'm also open to the idea that Kaworu is Aro-Ace, and he loves Shinji in a "soulmate" kind of way. GAINAX has created multiple dating simulators where Kaworu says "Aishiteru" to Shinji, and we ALL know that Aishiteru is the most romantic word you can use in that context! You should look up 'Shinji Ikari Raising Project' and 'Girlfriend of Steel 2nd'. In the Sadamoto manga, the editor Carl Gustav Horn says, "While I do think Shinji felt sexually attracted to Kaworu, and that you the audience is supposed to feel that he felt it, what Kaworu himself thought was a very different matter. Like Rei, I believe Kaworu to be innocent - coyly, he appears not to be so, because while Rei needed to be reached out to, Kaworu has come to reach out; whereas Rei has spent her whole existence being observed, Kaworu has come to observe". Carl Horn is the translator and editor, and he noticed that Kaworu was using ambiguous language that suggested asexuality. (I'm asexual, by the way) Actually, if you want official confirmation about Kaworu's orientation, I recommend watching a KZread video called "Tabris (Kaworu) vs Ramiel 5th Angel". I think it's a cutscene from a pachinko arcade video game, which is NOT a dating simulator! Kaworu says, "The moon is beautiful, isn't it, Shinji-kun?" which is a common phrase that romantic couples say to each other. It's wordplay, because the word "tsuki" (moon) sounds phonetically similar to the word "suki" for love.

I like how in rebuilds Kaworu keeps his distance slightly more, as if he has learned a bit about social interaction, his conclusion as a character was very good.

Good expansion on the Character who is quite cryptic interesting that he is simultaneously Shinji's Shadow and a christ figure. Going to have to rewatch the 3rd rebuild to see if there is any hint of Shadow integration because by the end of the last one Shinji is definitely changed and I suspect his experience with Kawrou has something to do with it.

I almost forgot about your Kaworu videos, great work! I mainly only saw him as a male version of Rei who Shinj becames close with but your analysis of him was a great refresher and eye opener. Great comparison with Jesus to a point as well

I'm a millennial I was around back when You had to buy anime DVDs at FYE And they only have like three episodes for $60 When you could buy anime magazines that had upcoming news about your favorite shows And it was really hard to find other anime fans I'm not saying this to gatekeep or to be a "hipster" about it I bring this up because if you were around this time you may relate to an interesting perspective around Evangelion that relates to Kaworu I remember reading about evangelion in my anime magazines back when I was in middle school I remember seeing artwork on photobucket I remember seeing Asuka and Rei EVERYWHERE when evangelion was being talked about I remember seeing Mistato and Pen pen I remember seeing shinji I remember seeing Gendo's iconic pose And some of the background characters weren't shown as much I remember seeing All of them at least once in some of the advertising You know who I never saw a single time in any of the adverts I saw? Kaworu. He was never shown in any of the ads I saw. Not a single one. I understand the argument could be made that he wasn't an important character or maybe Western studios didn't view him as important But I do find it fascinating with him is considered queer-coded that he was not seen in many of the advertising back in the early 2000s and I don't think that's a coincidence I remember I saw advertising for evangelion before I saw the show and I remember being thrown off by Kaworu's introduction specifically because of this I had seen every character at least once somewhere before my introduction to the show itself Whether on photo bucket or a magazine or a dvd cover (etc) But I hadn't seen him ANYWHERE Considering shinji has such a strong emotional reaction to him Which is clearly shown in end of evangelion (When God Rei first shows up) I find it interesting that I didn't even know his character existed I apologize if I rambled a bit but I'm very curious if there's anyone out there that had a similar experience If you around back in the early 2000s days of anime culture Did you notice the absence of Kaworu in Western anime merchandising?

Western culture has a long history of depersoning queer people so I'm not surprised that same bigotry would extend to fictional characters. I used to get anime DVDs at FYE too but more slice of life stuff. Evangelion was a show I torrented at recommendation of someone I knew online. I think kaworu’s story was on of unrequited love towards shinji. Kaworu could’ve saved the world but instead he tried to comfort shinji in every timeline assuming it was mutual, but then in the re series where shinji could stand up for himself and wasn’t attracted to someone else supporting him Kaworu still liked him but Shinji didn’t, bc ultimately shinji just wanted someone who would cater to his every need at the time. The manga especially made that much obvious as kaworu kissed him and shinji didn’t at all like it.

I used the religious definition of the word as it fit the theme of Kaworu being a Jesus like figure. The most common definition however is selfless and unconditional love which is basically the biblical description of God's love.

@@tonyfunk Hmm. Yenow what I think you did get that part right. Except I don't think it's unconditional love as I myself am a Christian. God has standards, a moral compass, and principals he asks that we follow in terms of right and wrong. He may have unconditional love in the sense that he "believes all things" as love is described in the book of first Corinthians. Meaning he believes everyone is capable of good. Here's an interesting quote by professor William Barclay in his new testament words stating "Agape has to do with the mind: it is not simply an emotion which rises unbidden in our hearts" (as may be the case with philia) "is is a principle by which we deliberately live. Tbf. I dont think Comparation with Jesus is something i stand by. Like they different to me. Jesus is God incarnate who is FULLY god and FULLY human. He can feel pain and fully feel emotions. He endured all of pain he been through before dying on the cross. He reduced himself to regular human to do it. And their "sacrifice" also differs. With Kaworu result being Instrumentality which doesnt give anyone choice of the matter and merges everyone into one which negates Humans entire nature of being different. While Jesus sacrifice does give a choice either you believe in his sacrifice and be closer to God or not. And Jesus's sympathy towards other humans comes in a form of "If the world hates you, remember it hated me first" like making him more like relatable figure who also suffered and offers to overcome suffering together. And Kaworu reveals to be homosexual in Rebuilds while Jesus remains the same and rejects homosexuality.

Also in another scene before the kiss Kaworu asked Shinji “what is love? describing it as a sticky painful feeling, wanting to kiss and touch them. Then afterwards he put his hand on Shinji’s cheek, asking him what it would feel like if Shinji came to love him. It’s just so obvious, and if it wasn’t a same sex pairing there would be no debate here. Ridiculous… This *is* queer erasure and I won’t stand for it.

Why do you think the producer rejected Kaworu being explicitly gay? Japan has massive homophobia problems and the author was not allowed to portray his character as he wished, you have to take that into account when analyzing this unless you are intending to erase the character entirely but given how you responded in the comment section I think that may have been your goal.

I think him dying was actually him destroying his AT field (his body), so he would be welcomed into Rei, whose field was also reported to have manifested (they did not know it was her though), probably disappearing temporarily. He didn't want to cause the Impact like that. He wanted it to be Shinji's choice. But his body was compelled to obey and try to reunite before he could get anyone's consent. At least, that was my interpretation. Some of the last Angels did seem more like poor communicators than Apocalypse bringers after all.

Its also important to know he is an ikuhara inspired character and ikuhara did that episode, he always has that in, and anno wanted him to be ikuharas unconditional love type. Hi! Queer erasure was not my intention whatsoever, nor was it a thought that ever crossed my mind in the making of this video. The point of my video was to look at the context behind a sheltered, godlike being and determine how they probably saw the world. It just happened that Kaworu's depiction in NGE struck me to be a representation of an asexual, ethereal being. Having said that, Part 2 is coming out soon and Kaworu's depiction in the rebuild series is very different which is why I personally think you would enjoy part 2.

games are just dating sims made for purely fan service, because than you can argue that shinji already has a gf, manga they only kissed because kaworu was experiencing love for the first time and didn’t understand it although in ep 24 drafts, there were two, in the first one shinji confesses his love to Kaworu and kaworu rejects him, and in the second draft, they both have feelings for each-over and they kiss romantically, i would recommend reading the drafts :))

Also, It's not really a proof, but I wonder why in every single NGE related media he's represented as gay. I wonder why Sadamoto said this in the "everything about Kaworu Nagisa" interview : Who named Kaworu ? "I asked the same question to Tsurumaki yesterday(laugh). The conclusion is that it probably was Akio Satsukawa. Nagisa can also be read as Messenger, perhaps he came up with the name when he was writing the script. We all think it fits Akio’s taste. What struck me most was how Akio expanded the world, he made Kaworu a JUNE (June was a popular yaoi magazine) character……Or I should say a male/male tanbi ("aesthetic") romances character that went berserk. The first script had more sparks: Kaworu and Shinji swim naked in the river under the setting sun--I hear that they really considered make this kind of scene at the moment. --Is this what they called the dreamy first script? Yes, Yes. In the end, Anno changed it to the bath scene. Anno took Akio’s idea into a very unique perspective, which end with this Kaworu who give you a decadent feeling, in my opinion. There is one thing that doesn’t need to cover up: they wrote EVA’s script as long as possible. In other words, the script they gave Anno had two Eps length, then Anno modified it into a story. So I think he probably cut off a lot of Kaworu’s story.

But after hearing it I know why. Kaworu Nagisa did NOT Legato Bluesummersed himself to hurt Shinji. That's not love. I'm so sorry for anyone conditioned to recognize this kind of abuse as love. Kaworu had free will enough to decide to die himself rather than hurt many. That's love. Self-love maybe but still more love than "Allow me to wallow in your suffering".

I always thought Kaoru was the representation of a god loving everybody. He DID love shinji, as he loves all other creatures. I however disagree he was naive and awkward like Rei. He is always talking to Shinji like a patient adult explaining things to a 3 year old. I however never understood why was he surprised at seeing lilith there, or why he uttered he now understood about the lilin. It cannot possibly be he now understands the lilin come from lilith. He already knows that. But...okay...he is surprised to find lilith there. If he wanted to fuse with Adam's body, and he went thorough all that to get there...Why didnt he just leave to look for it elsewhere? Thats what I always found confusing. I think his relationship and love towards Shinji was always very clear, and was never gay at all. It was not sexual in nature ever.
