Understanding HDCP 2.2 for 4K UHD

Ғылым және технология

HDCP - or High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection - has now been released as version 2.2, specifically for 4K UHD content.

The HowToAV team finds out more about HDCP 2.2 and compatibility with existing and future AV systems…
HDCP (or High definition Digital Content Protection) is a digital content protection technology developed by Intel to help prevent copying of digital AV content - and, therefore, reduce piracy of movies and video content from DVD, BluRay, digital streaming, etc by connecting a recording device into an AV system.
The latest version - HDCP 2.2 - has been developed to support high frame rate movies, which will include Ultra HD / 4K which we're going to see more and more of over the next couple of years as UHD content becomes more commonly available.

The problem with HDCP in general is that half the time people who just use their new stuff, whether it's Blu Ray player, game console, AV receiver for surround sound, etc; they end up getting screwed over by HDCP, instead of the people who deserve it. Funny how that works...

Yea Netflix wont show 4k for me but I can easily pirate it. Yes my entire system is HDCP 2.2 compliant and both the Netflix app or Edge browser just wont show any UltraHD for me. Frustrating as a paying customer of the 4k netflix service I can go on a torrent site and get the 4k content for free and it works.... So much bullshit. The copyright protection screws over the paying customer but doesn't stop piracy.

"and, therefore, reduce piracy of movies and video content" its funny that you said that, because it has the complete opposite effect. I want to watch 4k netflix and gladly pay for their service but almost none of the monitors have hdcp 2.2 so piracy is my only choice.

Wrong! You can play 4k movies on netflix app from microsoft store. I have a 4k monitor that doesn't have HDCP and I was able to play 4k movies from the windows 10 netflix app. Also you must install HEVC extension from microsoft store to make 4K netflix work.

AmbSwizag I posted in comments. Save some cash, buy an entry level HDCP 2.2 HDR TV such as Samsung 7000 series, just so you get a better screen, contrasts, and refresh rates, but the 1080p Bluray players are all going to 4K as the standard now, and cheap 1080p players aren't so good any more. So grab a good one if you can, and use an A/V with 4K upscaling unless the player has upscaling, and you can configure your hardware setup to get that 4K to the TV. It's not the ultimate solution, but how big is your room, and screen size, and how much resolution do you need for that screen size? That's where being realistic comes into play, and leaving your money in your pocket. They can keep their HDCP, players, and disks. Like you, I won't buy into it, and won't for as long as I can until my hardware begins to fail dammit... It's such a shame to miss out on something that could have been, but is just too unrealistic to force onto consumers this crap. Then they'll go HDCP 2.3, and everyone will need to upgrade all their hardware when they upgrade one thing in the hardware chain. Rediculous. Yep, just don't buy it. If everyone rejects it, it can't enter the market can it. But if 2000 people are happy to pay $20 for a Big Mac, then that's the cost that they will thrust upon others for profit. Don't pay it, don't play it. Don't be one of those 2000 people that ruin it for everyone else I say.

Of course what you don't say is that it would in theory be very simple to upgrade your old system with HDCP 2.2. However, as companies are greedy, they force you to upgrade to "new" devices instead of supporting the old ones for "security" reasons.

Hi! HDCP 2.2 not only plagues TVs, but they also plague computers. I am wondering if you know if the Radeon Pro 460 GPU on the current MacBook Pro 15" 2016 model has HDCP 2.2 compliance or not? I wanted it to be future proof in watching Netflix 4K in the future. The problem is the Skylake processor is not equipped with HDCP 2.2. So I hope that the AMD GPU will have HDCP 2.2 support. I do not want to wait until Kaby Lake comes out which the Kaby Lake is going to have native HDCP 2.2. Another problem is Macbook pro 2016 uses DisplayPort 1.2 which according to the general knowledge, displayport 1.2 is not HDCP 2.2 compatible. So I wonder if I connect the MacBook to a 4K HDCP 2.2 TV will the 4K content in the Macbook display on the TV? (assuming the GPU is HDCP 2.2 compliant). Only Disaply Port 1.3 is HDCP 2.2 supported that I know. Thank you very much! Please help me.

The CYP XA-HDCP converts HDCP2.2 signals to a lower HDCP format enabling AV content to be easily integrated into a system which uses non-HDCP2.2 compliant devices, thus eliminating the need to upgrade all devices in the signal path to be HDCP2.2 compliant. Technically the PS3 should be able to connect into a new 4K UHDTV and display a 1080 picture. However, there are reports of consumers having problems with all sorts of TV’s and video sources when interfacing into new 4K televisions. These problems can be caused by incorrect implementations of HDCP in the firmware of the televisions and input video sources. Firmware updates mainly fix problems but can add new issues when upgrading. When purchasing a new 4K TV you first will need to ensure that it is HDCP 2.2 compliant. There are 4K televisions being advertised on the market but are not HDCP 2.2 complaint. See our video for further detail here- kzread.info/dash/bejne/pamrksODZ6y7fM4.html When purchasing a new TV we would recommend, if possible, selecting a product that has mixture of HDMI inputs with HDCP 2.2 and HDCP 1.x compatibilty.

Good morning Dillon and thanks for your question! If your TV has one or more HDMI inputs, then it will definitely be HDCP compliant. If it's HD resolution (as opposed to UHD) then it will be HDCP version 1.4. If it is a 4K UHD TV then depending on the age of the device, it should be HDCP 2.2 (if it's relatively new), but check the manufacturer's specification just to be sure, especially if it's a more than a year or two old). However, we've done some research and have found the following statement from Sony: 'For 4K Ultra HD TV released in 2014: The HDMI 1 and HDMI 2 terminals of all Sony 4K Ultra HD TVs support the HDCP 2.2 protocol.' See this link us.en.kb.sony.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/44455/~/is-my-4k-ultra-hd-tv-compatible-with-hdcp-2.2%3F We'll see if we can find any more info for you. Once HDCP 2.2 is a hardware implementation, there is no way to crack it. To play UHD HDCP-protected content, all devices in the chain should be compatible with HDCP 2.2, or the resolution will be downscaled t 1080p ( or even cut down). Also, DCP (company that regulates the HDCP implementation) is being more restrictive to manufacturers, cranking lawsuits against any company that goes against its regulations.

If there's anything to be learned from things leaking onto the internet, it's that you can't stop it. That's why HDCP has, is and will always be absolutely ineffectual. All it takes is one person to be able to copy and share a movie for HDCP to be rendered useless. I don't condone piracy, I just hate being prevented from watching 4K movies because my 4K computer monitor or TV doesn't have the latest HDCP.

The current HDCP right now as of 2020 is HDCP 2.3. As for a new device like the PS5, you won't have to worry about it. But if you have and old 4k tv or old HDMI cables, then you'll have to check online if they're HDCP 2.3 compatible. Anything before 2018 is not HDCP 2.3 compatible. I just recently learned about HDCP and realized I bought my PS4 Pro 2 years ago, my 4K tv last year, and a 4k compatible HDMI and my 4K blue ray player this year. So I'm all set as far as HDCP compliant. The only thing I think you have to watch out for is when the new HDCP compliance comes out and you have to buy a new device to replace an older one.

HDCP 2.2 is supposed to work fine with 1080p, but when I tried it, didn't work. I was HDMI cables that are both HDCP 2.2 compliant going into my Avermedia capture card, and I got no signal. Half the time I don't even record the PC. I just use the capture card to output my PC to the TV, so I don't have take another HDMI input out of only three. I feel like with HDCP 2.2, anything you use that has go through an output, such as an AV Receiver, it has to support this new standard. Otherwise, older equipment potentially might work. Fuck you Intel. Sit on these two middle fingers and spin.

Hi Aksay - the solution to this problem is to use a HDCP2.2 converter such as this: shop.cie-group.com/shop/av-distribution_19/hdmi_1023/hdmi-test-equipment_1031/hdcp--colour-bandwidth-converter-with-hdmi-repeater-uhd-hdcp22-hdmi_23164.php It will convert the HDCP2.2 from your PS4 Pro to a lower HDCP format compatible with your TV. @@HowToAVtv But what about the other way around? My TV is 2.2 compliant. But I run everything from my PC which has a 4k supported graphics card. Unfortunately the HDMI output of the GPU is 1.4. So can I convert my TV to 1.4? Or can I convert the 1.4 signal up to 2.2 before it reaches the TV with a converter?

Piracy is the answer. Those companies don't seem to understand something, that's why piracy is the answer.

Yea hdcp seems like a crock of shit to me. I haven't had an issue with it, but if I ever do, the first thing im doing is going to piracy. By the way nice video.

Australia is about to introduce 4k tv via satellite Foxtel. I have had it installed for a 1 0ct kick off but the installer told me it wont work because my Hisense 4k tv (paid $4000 !!!!) isn't compliant . Hisense cant upgrade the firmware. I am praying a stripper from HDCP2.2 to 1.4 works or I ave shot myself in the foot through no fault of my own

The fight against piracy, and associated costs, are passed onto the consumer. It is of great concern for consumers, once HDCP 2.2 is broken, that device compatibility will suffer, and the saga will keep going round, and round, costing consumers more every time they release a new HDCP version into our devices. We as consumers don't want to carry this burden, and not everyone can afford to keep upgrading their hardware. Piracy can't be stopped, but if a movie is a realistic price, and consumers can go and buy a quality disk without the hassle of pirating, then sales remain steady. But because of HDCP, I will save my money, keep my A/V Receiver with 4k upscaling, and settle for a plain 1080p Bluray player. 1080p disks are common, and cheaper than 4K UHD disks. Sure I'll miss out on UHD & HDR, but I won't pay premium prices on hardware with copy bullshit inbuilt, that will lock me out later down the track, even before I am due to upgrade. It's a real concern, and they can keep their 4K UHD disks, and players. FYI, I also boycott made in China as much as possible, and avoid buying made in US where postage is sky high internationally, and unviable to proceed. I am a folder, not a scruncher. I own a TX-NR818, and was considering the move across to class D amplification, with HDR pass-through, and purchasing a 4K UHD Player, but this HDCP crap puts me right off. No sale here. I won't jump on this ridiculous round-a-bout and stick to 1080p upscaling as I said. The 4K UHD disks can stay on the shelf! It's like having to authenticate a PC game via some form of unwanted, and inconvenient means before it will let you play it, and when that service disappears, you can't play that game any more, and you have to upgrade everything if you want to play the next game release. For real?

Hdcp is bs! I’ve had a uhd player for three years but my old 4K tv wouldn’t support HDCP2,2 so i couldn’t enjoy the full benefits, I had to buy an entirely new TV. Screw this industry that punishes those who still try to buy the official products.

It just makes it difficult for people and another way for them to sell tech at higher costs. It's just pure nonsense.
