What’s interesting is how his live model drawings “don’t” look like frazettas. Once he mastered drawing , he chose elements he liked to all his figures that defined his style

I'm glad I found this channel. I've been searching for material like this about figure drawing and gesture etc. on the internet for a while( I need to get one of those figure drawing books) and also I've been studying Frazetta's work again. Your videos have both

This has been actually really liberating, even after only glimpsing what was going on in that book you showed on shapes and flow of the character in the 1st video, for a second.. My figure drawings and ideas could literally just flow now! which is incredible! As soon as you understand how to build its foundations, the rest seems to follow!

Thank you for these videos! I have just ordered the Bridgman book and Frazetta Sketchbook II (number I is out of stock everywhere). I got a renewed interest in drawing at an older age and feel a bit excited now that I have kind of a "plan" as what to learn and how to practice it. No more lazy doodling! :)

I think you already hit the spot when you said Frazetta is careful when putting down his lines and also that his work always feels like a one shot. I think he pulls back a little each time he draws to check back to his idea or imagination of the figure, always careful not to add one millimeter of line that would actually look awkward in real life with the same lighting that he’d imagined. With your illustrations and how I do mine, it seems we build the shapes from the inside out, whereas he did it from outside in, always careful not to make a “sketch” look but a finished look. I think I need to work on my anatomy, to the muscles and tendons that actually would be behind the shapes of the body.

The problem that i have this method is proportions, when i build some basic shapes with minimal info it's way easier to get everything right.

Hi Jesus! Can you do something related to the way to approach the shading aspect of all this? I have good structure and gesture understanding, but i honestly hit a wall when i try to approach the shading phase, its really frustrating. Frazetta had a fantastic understanding of shading, and it adds so much to the drawing in general, specially with pencils. Thanks!

I think the omittion of the line of action comes from figure drawing practice. Specially when you practice doing it timed. You are forced to draw general shapes for that.

Actually, I do not do any life drawing, the line of action knowledge comes from animation.

Jesus Lopez ok, or an email or discord would be really beneficial for crit. I'm trying to understand constructive compositional drawing like Frazetta too and it's quite a laborious task but together I believe we can get their faster!

I think a lot of people follow the rules of art which they have been taught, by someone with perceived authority on the matter. With little critical analysis if it is even true or applicable to what they're doing. And in comes someone like frazetta who does his own thing and does it so well while shattering all the rules which we have heard. The only rule in art is that it should look good. to hell with all the rest
