Thank you so much for your brilliant videos on this amazing artist(and you are no slouch yourself !) . I’ve always loved Norman Rockwells work , and I’ve only just discovered Frazzeta . What amazes me is the amount of work these artists produce , I would love to see them at the drawing board and painting easel ,they must have had an unbelievable understanding and speed of execution. The composition and design of even the simplest comic book panel is off the scale . Thanks again and best wishes from a seventy year old Englishman who is green with envy .!

Frazetta was an absolute magician! He practiced consistently, studying, drawing from life, taking his own references photos to practice from, so when it was showtime on the drawing board he could create without reference just like Kim Jong Ji. And even cooler thing? We all can do the same thing. It's one of the most powerful forms of freedom for an artist. This shouldn't make anyone, who leans heavily on photo reference during showtime painting, feel insecure. There are many ways to create and its up to you to decide what helps you create best. Also keep in mind: you don't have to use the same method forever. So have fun!

Even in the most seemingly static of images there is motion. Sometimes very dramatic, sometimes subtle...the light, the dark, the positioning of the figures across the visual plane...you can't stop looking at it.

His hat band adds to the circular wrap of his arms around the woman, aiding the composition flow, the crease in her arm is placed there to point out her perspective placement on the boat, along with the position of her leg, whereas his leg is to point out her side gesture and bosom. Don't examine his sketch by his lines only, consider the broader human gestures and how they play and intermingle with one another. In the piece before this, you could see the case and strap were there for a reason, first to move the eye along the line of action, and secondly to show the expanse of his upper chest, everything has purpose.

The earring on the side of the head supports the action of the movement of the head to carry the action and therefore that earring is essential to the drawing, these are things that must not be missed with Frazetta, he covers all bases, even the elements too.

Hey, I know this video is old, but I just wanted to say if you want to understand Frazetta then study Bridgeman. To understand this pose, draw a line of the shoulder girdle, a line at the top of the hips, think in the dimensions of X,Y, and Z and you'll see it better

Frazetta's supporting the lean of the action of the woman with her twists and turns, making more of an action, than just an action line reference, in other words he himself is mentally placing himself inside the woman, to acquire the feeling of her thrust. Everything from that point of view supports his drawing choices.

You said you're not sure if he drew the character's face before he silhouetted it. That depends if he was working from the model or not. I know a lot of people THINK Frazetta didn't work from models and photos because that is the propoganda he spread, but he definitely worked from photos. Check out Rough Work, the art book. The author knew Frazetta and when he passed, a lot of reference photos were shown. Type in "Frazetta reference photo" into google images. You will see a photo of him carrying a gun that is a pose he used for a painting. There were also a lot of photos where he and his wife posed. Frazetta knew that if he said he drew from his head, that people would value his work higher. This is a guy who signed every page of his sketchbooks before he passed. I say all this not to disparage the guy. Amazing work! But we're all people. He was no magician.
