Understanding Bipolar Disorder
Developed and produced by www.MechanismsinMedicine.com
Animation Description: Bipolar Disorder encompasses a wide spectrum of symptoms and is classified according to the types of mood episodes exhibited, including: manic, hypomanic, major depressive and mixed episodes.
Bipolar I disorder involves a manic or mixed episode in contrast to Bipolar II disorder, which involves at least one major depressive episode and at least one hypomanic episode, but no full manic or mixed episodes.
Bipolar Disorder should be differentiated from Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), which is diagnosed when a patient experiences one or more major depressive episodes without any lifetime episodes of hypomania or mania.
Depicted here is a life chart (or mood chart), which follows the patient's lifetime history of mood episodes. This permits the identification of mood episodes that are the most prevalent and important to prevent.
In this patient, as with many patients with bipolar disorder, depressive episodes become the more prominent aspect of the illness as the person ages.
Several morphometric differences have been observed in the brains of Bipolar Disorder patients relative to healthy subjects.
White matter hyperintensities and reduction in grey matter volume, identified with MRI, have been described in patients with Bipolar Disorder.
Increased ventricular size and decreased frontal cortical area volumes may also be observed in Bipolar Disorder patients.
The pathophysiology of Bipolar Disorder encompasses environmental, behavioural, neuronal, cellular, and molecular levels.
At the molecular level, aberrant signaling cascades alter synaptic plasticity. Strong evidence supporting the importance of second messenger signaling has come from studying the targets of mood stabilizing drugs such as lithium.
GSK-3 and IP3 signaling cascades are known to mediate axonogenesis, synaptogenesis, neuronal growth and cone spreading. Other downstream effects may also be involved.
The heritability of bipolar disorder is around 80%. Monozygotic twins are reported to have a higher incidence of developing Bipolar Disorder, approximately 40%, whereas the incidence is only 10% in dizygotic twins.
Although the process of developing bipolar disorder likely arises from complex interactions between genes and environmental factors, the specific genes that contribute to this risk are not known with certainty. Variations of several genes have been identified as potential contributors to the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder.
Among the identified genes are those associated with serotonin signaling (SLC6A4, TPH2), dopamine signaling (SLC6A3, DRD4), glutamate transmission (DAOA, DTNBP1), and cell maintenance and growth (NRG1, BDNF, DISC1).
The most significant environmental triggers of mood episodes among patients with bipolar disorder include use of drugs with mood-altering properties, changes in circadian rhythm, and life stressors.
Successful management of bipolar disorder requires particular attention to minimizing the effects of these influences.
It is also available on www.MDPracticeGuide.com - wholly CME guideline resource dedicated to the needs of busy, practice-based physicians, which spans multiple therapeutic areas.

They’re calling bipolar disorder “BPD” in this video and I just want other viewers to know that the use of “BPD” is actually used to refer to borderline personality disorder and not bipolar disorder. Don’t get confused!!

Yeah I was thinking that but on Google too some sites mention it as BPD
After years of sadness, cutting, and suicidal thoughts and actions I got diagnosed with this along w 3 other mental illnesses... on the outside, and to people I'm a really nice shy person.. even with friends I'm always nice and happy and humble... but in the inside it's so much pain sometimes unbearable... ik I'll have to live with this forever, but the thought of that really scares me.. it's almost like thinking how long can I take it before I can no longer...I'm only 19... I'm fighting this and I hope to keep winning!

BPD = Borderline personality disorder not bipolar disorder
You can have mixed episodes with Bipolar II, as long as you dont reach full blown mania you classify as type II
I think I'm the only one who has this disorder, by reading comments I get to know , I have lot of friends here.... welcome family 😂😂😍

The worst for me was having a manic episode due to life stressors. And then during that time I tried to calm myself down with weed. Well guess what their blaming it on guys.

Can I share something with you since your brother has bipolar? Ever thought about changing the diet? I had a friend of mine who had bipolar disorder. But his bipolar disorder was caused by Dairy and Gluten. When he stopped both, he became a lot better. For example, check youtube video "The Milk Protein Casein and Bipolar Disorder" by Dr. David J. Clark. There is also a youtube video on how epilepsy was cured after dairy was eliminated.

Can Bipolar Disorder also mean triggering a manic episode in the form of anger? That`s when I feel it. or medicine change? When I remain devoid of emotion, or negative ones, I remain stable, or down. Mostly when I`m doing drugs (mostly prescribed) or not my mood goes wild and caused long term problems.
I just have one question, women in my family ave a long history of thyroid disease. Can that be an indicator or preditor for BPD?
just went through the harshest bipolar episode i had yet. i need to figure my shit out lol
Very Educational..

So nice 👍
Misdiagnosed bipolar am really suffering with borderline personality is a common misdiagnosis.
Well...I guess it passed onto me when my mother had to go through a lot in her younger years during the 80’s till I was born then I had to also go through a lot in my younger years.. like I could explain it all, what happened and everything when I was young but, it’s better that the therapists and health councillors that I talked to know 😁unless you’d want to..
So can I get an MRI and it will tell me if I have it , cause I had a dirty rotten psychotic depression when I was 22 and that was 1996 and they gave me an MRI cause I thought I had a tumor or something and it came out normal but would they have tested for bipolar cause im quite sure I am now . I was diagnosed with ADHD at one time as well
Discriminatin/stigmatization is another fact in our lifes. Not just another life stressor. It can cause unemployement, school drop out etc.
I know I have bipolar bc my biological mom and my biological grandmother has it to and I have depression I believe bc i just feel useless sometimes bc I get anxiety idk why I have a nice life Accept at school

Ok but you could just have depression and anxiety. Out of my family only my father and I seem to have it, whereas the rest of my family have anxiety trauma and depression. My child only has a 10 percent chance of being bipolar. So your relatives wouldn’t be a reason to “know” anything.

Coffee true. Why getting a clinical diagnosis from an actual therapist/psychiatrist is so important too because medications prescribed for BD won’t help to treat depression, and vice versa.

@maxphillips6249

Bipolar 2 means you have had a hypomanic episode and no manic episodes. Hypomania is a less severe form of mania so I guess you could class hypomania as low mania of you wanted

Without mania it is usually major depressive disorder. But everyone is different, talk to your doctor about it
Its really hard to be bipolar
I'm curious if there is a connection between Bipolar disorder and previous drug addiction? From my experience with friends and family that had a previous stint with drug addiction nearly all that beat the addiction began exhibiting bipolar symptoms.

Yes I agree Depression and Bipolar Disorder both are very bad as I have personally seen this when my brother faced it. #RicckyKa helped us a lot and it was good motivation from him. I think everyone who is suffering from any Mental Disorder should at least watch his #RicckyKa video on Depression. It helped us and it should also help you.
