This video introduces you to Cisco's Hot Standby Router Protocol (HSRP), which is classified as a First Hop Redundancy Protocol (FHRP), along with Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP), and Gateway Load Balancing Protocol (GLBP).
This video covers both the theory and configuration of HSRP, which is a topic on Cisco's CCNA (200-301) and ENCOR (350-401) exams.

Hsrp was one of the configurations in our capstone project last year! Haha. We designed a network with redundancy so we came upon hsrp and had to learn it by ourselves.

The level of details is just amazing. Also love the animation on the top right hand corner. What I really suggest is I'm here because your udmeny encro do not cover the part about tracking and some of the details. I hope you can upload this to your udmeny course so that I dont need to keep jumping between udmeny and youtube. Thanks a lot still.

Thank you Kevin. Intro explanation was awesome . Best tutorial on HSRP ever !!! Quick question : In case gi0/1 interface on R1 goes down unexpectedly, before it's able to send resign message to standby router . Only way for standby router to become active would be through hello hold time out value. Is my understanding correct ?

Thank you for the explanation Kevin! When you say that with real gears, R1 will understand that the interface has been shut and therefore, it will send out the resign message to R2, via which link would it notify this ? As the local link between the routers have been disconnected already, does that mean, the hsrp notification needs to be routed via the uplinks ?

Thanks Kevin for the wonderful video! However, having understood what you have to say (if I am not wrong), led me to a query (hopefully of a level ahead). Here it goes. Would be great if you can enlighten me. Can we have one interface of a router participate in more than one HSRP groups at the same time? I understand that one interface belongs to one and only one subnet and, HSRP is a means to provide redundancy. Redundancy can only be there for one sub-network for any particular interface. So there is no point or practicability of having more than one HSRP groups for one interface? PS: Yes, we can have sub-interfaces and then we can do the same great HSRP configuration per sub-interface for one subnet, but then my question again is the same - for one sub-interface, can we have multiple HSRP groups to provide redundancy for same subnet? If yes, how does that fit in? I hope my question makes sense to you.

What is to stop a hacker's rogue HSRP router from intercepting the MD5 message via packet sniffer and using command such as "standby 10 authentication md5 key-string 7 md5_hashed_text_goes_here" ? Is the MD5 message salted?
