Understand and Learn the Rules of Positive and Negative Numbers

John Zimmerman, www.tabletclass.com, explains how to add, subtract, multiply and divide positive and negative numbers...also known as the integer rules. Positive and negative numbers along with integers are vital skills to master pre-algebra, algebra 1 and all middle and high school math courses.

@@littlemochamsp7704 to be fair, it is a bit confusing. she said she *still* doesn't get it, which is implying she went into this video not knowing and came out not knowing, but then she also said "thanks to this video now i do", which implies she learned. her comment is saying both that she learned and still doesn't understand, (no hate to her, i'm glad she's making effort to learn and getting better) so I can understand how that person got confused.

I do too I think it's because they do a better job of explaining to one person. But a teacher has to explain to an entire class so they rush through it and than its like one person gets it and another doesn't.

I'm 73 and am severely (and I mean SEVERELY) math challenged. Was very sick as a child and missed a lot of school so by 9th grade I was so lost the teacher sounded like he was speaking Greek to me. 😕 Thru the decades math became a very nasty 4-letter word to me, so the family joke is if you start taking math around me you're swearing at me. 🤐 Over time I've picked up some useful knowledge here and there and lately I've started watching videos like yours to help me fill in some of the missing pieces in my learning. It's truly helped a lot, but I have a very long way to go before I'll ever be comfortable around numbers. 😊 In your video, I was with you thru everything up to the last problem when you started speaking Greek. 🤔 I don't now, and may never understand how the answer was reached. It simply isn't logical to me, but that's been my biggest roadblock; to me, math isn't logical. But because of teachers like you it's been a lot easier for folks like me and I'm truly thankful for that. God bless.

The reason why the last answer is positive 9 because there’s two negatives and there’s a bracket separating the two number. The brackets means to multiple and when multiplying two negative numbers you get a positive sign and a positive number.

When I actually learned positive & negative, (around 2 years ago) I had a bad teacher so I never bothered to learn bc if you didn't get the right answer, she'd say something along the lines of "Well why don't you know the answer. Everyone here does, haven't you been listening?" But I finally mustered up enough courage to try and relearn it. I'm proud of myself.

Holy crap finally a way to understand that made it simple. However the subtraction was the only one I didn't enjoy. Would have preferred to learn a different style for that one.

hi, the procedure is to turn subtraction problems into addition problems. so if you know how to add positive and negative numbers then you should understand. I would focus on adding positive and negative numbers first. Then when you do subtraction problems turn them into addition problems.

i found this video trying to find a song, but whatever. You know, when I was in the second-grade they asked me what three minus five was and I wanted to say negative-two, but they said I was wrong; that it was just two. . . Bastards.

Well it is -2. They lied to you, they probably initially thought you were too stupid to answer it correctly since you were little and when you did get the answer right, they just said it's 2 or they themselves are that dumb. Subtracting larger #'s from smaller one's in the "Laws of positive & negatives" will always correctly be a negative.

That's ofcourse if both numbers are positive, tho.The only way it would be positive 2, is if the problem was labeled 5+-3.

this is SO helpful. i went in to grade nine never understanding integers, because i was never taught properly. i got a number line, and we learned using that, so when it was taken away, everybody that had been in my class was completely lost. don't get me wrong, the number line was super helpful, but it was a massive time waster and left a ton of room for error. this way is so much easier, thank you!

hello, well in this problem it would be the same as -7 + -1 = - 8. remember think of the "negative" sign as an instruction to make the number to the right of it the "opposite" sign; -(+7) = -7 or - (-7) = +7
