The episodes I’ve seen previously were basically like, “Wow, I couldn’t believe how horrible the working conditions were. I could never do that seriously, especially considering all these people doing those jobs are so poor. Real sweet of them to work so hard for me at this minimum wage job when they’ve got these significant presumably-unrelated money issues going on. I’m going to give this one employee who I interacted with directly and liked a holiday because I’m such a generous and good guy.” Though to be fair, normally when they express not liking their job the CEO acts like he cares about making the job more likeable. I’m sure it’s just for the cameras, but they definitely didn’t fire them on camera.

My favourite(?) thing about Undercover Boss is that they give, like, one person a holiday or something and completely ignore the underlying conditions that make it such a shitty place to work.

I knew a girl who worked there around 2008. They told her she 'had the privilege' to compete in a Hooters bikini contest BUT that she'd need to buy new bikinis, would not get paid unless she won AND would have to take off work. She politely declined and they did everything they could to hound her at work for tiny infractions and fired her a month later. She was a super sex positive person who even liked the outfits and they still managed to go to far with her. I hate Hooters so much.

Hahaha I work for a grocery chain in the northeast US and the former CEO (and also his daughter who is the present one) is like plastered on our walls and talked / joked about frequently. They could never get away with going undercover. They also have like visited and we’ve met them. But I’m sure most people don’t know their CEOs like that

I am literally so angry. Jimbo is disgusting. “Evaluating” those women’s appearances just so he can check them out and comment on it and call it “doing his job”. i agree jimbo and doug were actually DISGUSTING. buttt every hooters establishment does the line up thing before we work (called a jumpstart). it isn’t as intense as the show made it seem… it’s more so just making sure you look presentable because many of the guests will ask to take pictures with you and a big part of the job is looking “photo shoot ready”. sure some people come into hooters strictly for the food, but most come for other obvious reasons hahahah. this information is given to us during orientation so we know what to expect and can quit if we don’t feel comfortable! i honestly love my managers and the hooters i work at and i always feel comfortable/safe with them! obviously i can’t speak for other hooters tho and that bean thing was just nasty lmao

Below minimum wage. Any tipped employee gets way lower than the state’s average minimum wage. For my state it’s about 4 dollars an hour.

a lot of s*xual assault awareness (from a certain angle) is phrased as “she’s someone’s daughter” or “she’s someone’s mom/sister/wife.” yet she is her own whole person too with her own rights regardless. it’s like the woman herself isn’t centered as an individual, but respecting a woman/girl is transactional depending on how important she is to other people. very weird.

The issue with Hooters isn't the uniform itself. It's the fact that male executives decided they would only hire women if they would dress in a sexualized manner and subject themselves to being sexualized at work by both customers AND BOSSES (?) without protecting themselves. I think that's what that woman was getting at. It wasn't a bad take. It's a predatory business that perpetuates rape culture.

I've got news for you... most CEOs did not work all that hard to get where they are today. They're like this guy. They got there because they already have money and already have connections. I'm almost glad she got fired just because I'm hoping she managed to leave that shitshow quicker to find a better job (so literally any other job). It absolutely makes sense that the episode went a long way to hurt his reputation. Also, the restaurant featured in the episode was rebranded by another company six months after the episode aired. I think the city wanted nothing to do with the company either.

Person Yeah but that’s the job… we always talk about how sex work is legitimate work. If a pornstar (a far more revealing job) refused to get naked, would it not be reasonable to not employ them or fire them? How can sex work be legitimate work if employees cannot be held accountable for not doing their job? If you wanna talk about why society finds the objectification of women appealing then that’s a different and far more valid concern.
