I think of the "old-timers" like Uncle Scotty and think their generation had far BETTER judgement in protecting and serving their community then the hyper-sensitive generation we have today. These older guys understood what was serious and what was not. In today's hypersensitive world - everything has to become a 3-alarm emergency and a federal case. What this really means is that the serious stuff gets mixed up with the not serious stuff - and obfuscates where true attention and energies need to be used.

Good to see you, Scotty. You were one of the best instructors that I ever had in LAPD.

Scotty reminds me of some of my experiences in the late ‘60s in a major east coast city.

I served with a guy who was huge and powerful - at least 6' 4", all muscle, square jawed, and with a dark mustache. He would have made a great Bond villain, but instead he spent his off-duty time playing Lacrosse with our civilian supervisor, Bill, who was an average sized guy. For those who don't know it, Lacrosse can be a very brutal game where opposing team members "accidentally" whack each other with their sticks. My first roommate in college played the game and I don't recall him ever coming back from a match without some part of his body bleeding. It was the same way with Bill. The more bruised and bloodied he was, the better the game had been. As for our man-mountain, he received the occasional wound, but I shudder to think what became of his opponents. If the rumors are true, the paramedics were usually successful reviving them.

I loved the job. We did away with roll calls and I believe it’s is a mistake. Each officer has take home cars and they begin their tour the moment they radio in from their house. It’s a great perk but roll calls is where the guys played practical jokes. It’s where you got a nickname, and where you learned about serious issues your squad mates were going through. They call it camaraderie and it’s lost on this generation of officers when the job needs it more than ever.

Yea, m glad I’m retired (FD). Back in the day the fire station was a frat house. PC?, we would all be in jail these days. Being a command officer now wouldn’t be any fun.
