Actually the real reason behind smacking the rice bag is to ensure there's no holes in the bag or else once you smack it you'll hear drops of grains falling out.

It's more popular in Northern China and most Chinese diaspora come from southern China. Plus it's only gained worldwide popularity quite recently.

I wish everyone is like Aunty Hersha. I'm sure she got dragged and read to hell for following that horrible fried rice recipe but she was such a good sport about it 🙂.
