Elvis and Milton made a great team. Also, nice to see when patriotism was still fashionable and not looked down on. This is classic, I've never seen it before.

People are still patriotic, but the neo patriots are all driving Toyotas and Hyundai's to their "rallies" now. They also talk big but have never been in the military, doesn't sound very patriotic to me. My Dad was in the military and he thinks dumpf is an idiot, oh and dumpf also dodged the draft, again not patriotic.

When Elvis appeared on the Milton Berle show, Berle received literally half a million letters complaining about the “vulgar” pelvis-thrusting singer. Berle called them “pan letters,” rather than “fan letters.” Berle called “Colonel” Tom Parker and told him about the letters, and said “You have a star on your hands.” He was, of course, proved correct.

You have to love the energy and excitement that broadcasting & producing Live Television in the 1950s exuded! Performing onstage to an in-house audience and those millions of viewers out there in TV Land, the domain of so many BIG STARS of the day like Uncle Milty or some nice young man named Elvis. Plus, the whole family gathered together at the same time to enjoy the experience TOGETHER. Nowadays, family members sequester themselves about the house to plug into their devices to pursue their personal interests and entertainment. ✌🍁✌

This is hilarious! Back when some people were scared of rock n roll leave it to Milton Berle to go even further and break and smash his guitar 🎸 years before The Who ever did! Funny! Berle was crazy like a Fox and wasn’t afraid of this new trend in music. In fact he welcomed Elvis and even tried to join in the fun! And Milton Berle was the King of live Television back then along with Ed Sullivan who practically ran show business on the East Coast. If you wanted to become big and become a National Act you had to go on Sullivan’s show to get the exposure. Now TVs not that important. Now it’s the Internet and KZread and Viral Videos! Back then it was a different game run by a handful of people.

This is the moment rock n roll blew the world up and some would say it ain’t been the same since. It went from Sinatra, big bands, and top 20 to Gibson, Fender, and Marshall. Especially after Blue Suede Shoes where Elvis about completely looses it in a good way and Bill Black starts riding his bass. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Robert Plant, and Roger Daltrey all saw this as kids. All hell broke loose after that.

I'm sure you've seen the clip of P McC playing Bill Black's bass, but check out the one (I think it's in the wings as he's going on stage in Memphis) where he recounts going to the movies with John for their first chance to see Elvis in motion!

Paul Dunn Yeah, you Brits missed the original explosion 💥 of the first Rockers on TV like Elvis, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino and Jerry Lee Lewis but they did tour in Britain except for Elvis. He couldn’t tour Britain or Europe because of the Colonel blocking him. On the other hand, I am only now catching up on all the Grey Whistle Test and Top of the Pops shows that I missed out on back in the 70s and 80s. Now thanks to KZread I can finally watch those shows and we missed out on the whole glam scene with TRex, Sweet and the rest. There was no Satellite coverage or Internet or KZread. I saw an interview with Elvis around 1973. The interviewer asked him about his "moves". Elvis told him when they were first starting he went backstage and one of the guys told him to get back out there and do what he'd been doing. He asked, "what have I been doing"? The guy said moving your arms and legs all around. With a chuckle, Elvis told the interviewer, "been doing it ever since"! Not intended as vulgar; he didn't even realize what he was doing.

Had one saw the LIVE broadcast, on a color set it was indeed shown "IN COMPATIBLE COLOR". The term as always used on 1950's NBC broadcasts was to (pointedly) differentiate NBC-RCA broadcasts and the systems employed to generate them from their victory over a (potential rival) CBS system that could not be seen on anything but CBS manufactured receivers. The FCC ruled in favor of the NBC-RCA system primarily on the basis that it was COMPATIBLE. That is, able to be received on ALL TVs either Black and White or Color sets both existing and in the future. Subsequent repeats and AFRT broadcasts of this episode used the NBC BLACK AND WHITE kinescope recording as seen here. Early NBC-RCA color had a " soft focus " to it which was accentuated on film recording accounting to the less than sharp focus as seen here even when accounting for extant copies of this film being at least second generation or more removed from the source footage. While black and white videotape recording WAS developed by 1956, NO color recording exists of any TV broadcast prior to 1958. Film/Kinescope recording continued to be used into the 1960s until the per foot price point of videotape reduced relative to that of film. Briefly, in the 1990's, the complete film recording of the show was available on budget priced home videotape. In black and white. This was likely one of the first outdoor COLOR TV broadcasts ever, almost certainly the first of that in a purely enertainment form. Berle, by this time was winding up a TV series that had begun in mid 1948 as "The Texaco Star Theater" By 1953, it was known as " The Buick Berle Show". As TV grew from primarily an East Coast service as far as live broadcasts went, viewers in increasingly outlying areas of the US were less inclined to watch "New York" style comics. As ratings declined for some of TVs pioneer stars, other shows and stars emerged. About the only variety format holdover from TVs earliest network days was Ed Sullivan, due in part to his role of that as a presenter only. NBC would eventually buy Berle out of a " Lifetime" contract by the 1960's. Berle was frequently a guest on numerous TV shows until his passing, relatively unchanged from his days as " Uncle Miltie"... As for Elvis, this was his first TV appearance after his breakthrough "Stage Show" appearances on CBS in January-March of 1956. He would go on to appear on Berle's last episode in June 1956, debuting "Hound Dog" in a legendary performance that would long define him visually for those who had never seen him live. From there, " toned down" in various ways, he went on to appear on The Steve Allen Show and three "Ed Sullivan Show" appearances, one of which Sullivan instructed his cameramen to ONLY SHOW Presley from the WAIST UP. This was not lost on Presley, who performed both waist up and waist down for the studio audience. After his final Sullivan appearance in January 1957, he did not appear again until 1960 on a Frank Sinatra ABC TV special entitled " Welcome Home,Elvis". Not until 1968 did Presley return to TV on "The Singer Show" broadcast in December 1968. He appeared once more during his lifetime in the 1973 "Elvis, Aloha From Hawaii" broadcast. Seen also internationally via satellite.

And a king named Elvis was born. Milton Berle got a 1/2 million angry letters from his viewers for this. After that Berle said he knew Elvis was going to be the biggest thing ever. Milton Berle the original guitar smasher on stage

Amazing to think that this was originally broadcast in color. If only the original color Ampex tape recording survived, and not just this blurry kinescope.

What is particularly interesting about this to me is at 14:34 on the time dial in the credits is indicated that the broadcast was in "COLOR"... and on NBC and that must have been before they came up with the still used NBC Peacock logo which they soon had after that. The man who invented color TV lived on my street in Yonkers NY where most of the RCA executives lived then and I went to school with his son. I saw my first broadcast color TV while Trick or Treating in 1957 at the house of the man who invented it and they had the Peacock logo by then. Color broadcast TV was very poor and most of us preferred black and white until cable replaced it and gave us the bandwidth needed for a decent quality.

The footage we're seeing here on KZread was probably kinescoped off the original with black & white film and probably off of a black and white cathode ray TV tube.

Not sure if color videotape was around then or if they used any color kinescopes, but I know most of the color broadcasts back then were on local stations, broadcasting a few color shows, such as Superman, rather than from a network feed.
