Uncharted: Drakes Fortune - 14 Years Later

Ойындар

The Uncharted series is widely praised and is the blockbuster smash hit of the 7th generation and to an extent the 8th generation of PlayStation consoles. Though, few show the first game any love and attention. I want to take a look back at and critique Uncharted Drakes Fortune in this video. This will also be an Uncharted Drakes Fortune analysis.

Uncharted Drakes Fortune is the first game in the Uncharted series. In this Uncharted Drakes Fortune Critique and Uncharted Drakes Fortune Analysis, we will be looking at all the angles of Uncharted Drakes Fortune and analyzing the entire game. This Uncharted Drakes Fortune Retrospective takes both a modern and past perspective in mind to properly critique Uncharted Drakes Fortune 14 Years Later. I hope this video does well enough to warrant a full Uncharted Retrospective. I do mention that the puzzles here aren't very good but I don't know if that is just me because there are a ton of Uncharted Drakes Fortune Walkthrough online and I see people praising the puzzles in other Uncharted Drakes Fortune Review. If you enjoy this Uncharted Review and want a full Uncharted Series Retrospective. Let me know! I would love to make an Uncharted Series Review and potentially an Uncharted Series Explained video as the stories these games tell can be a bit confusing at times. This Uncharted 1 Review captured Uncharted PS5 gameplay at 1080p 60fps. I don't think we will get an Uncharted 5, assuming you don't count Lost Legacy as Uncharted 5, but we could perhaps get some Uncharted PC ports. Hopefully I will see you all again soon for an Uncharted 2 Critique and an Uncharted 3 Critique!
Greatness, from small beginnings... It’s a phrase that is repeated on more than a few occasions throughout Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and poetically it serves as a phrase that can be applied to the game as a whole within the context of the series. With each entry being greater than the last and with the quality gap between Uncharted 1 and 2 being as colossal as it is, it’s no surprise that the series humble beginnings doesn’t receive a lot of love these days. This doesn’t come as a surprise because the future Uncharted games are, while not immune to criticism, are praised to near infinity and in my eyes for good reason. Since Uncharted 2, the first of the series I had played, I had been hooked and loved the 3rd and 4th entries to the series. So much so that I want to begin a marathon of sorts to give my thoughts on the whole franchise. But before we get into what will hopefully be some gushing reviews of the creme de la creme of this series we need to start from the beginning.
Now according to a poll that was posted a while back, Drake's Fortune isn’t at the top of many peoples list, but many of you also clarified that the game certainly isn’t bad by any means. It actually reminded me a lot of the Arkham series as Arkham Asylum is seen as the worst, but not because the game is bad, it’s great actually, but because it’s sequels are so much better. Asylum was released in 2009 but it was surprisingly almost 5 years earlier that Naughty Dog began work on Uncharted as in 2005 they decided to take a new approach to development and their games. Being well known for the Crash Bandicoot and Jak games, games that were stylized to something like a cartoon, attempting to transition to realistic humanized games would prove to be difficult.
Making such a large pivot development wise was something Naughty Dog was aware of, and as such they titled this new project, BIG. A big game for a big jump in technology. With the 7th generation of consoles on the horizon, games were no longer prohibited from making realistic games by the hardware and while plenty of games still went for a stylized look, Project BIG wanted to plant itself somewhere between the two. Upon first being shown at E3 2006 it was immediately compared to the ever popular Tomb Raider games and was promptly dubbed “dude raider” on internet forums. Of course, the Tomb Raider games focused far more on puzzles than Uncharted, though Uncharted eventually shifted to focusing more on puzzles and exploration and I’d argue that the Uncharted games and the Reboot Tomb Raider games did a bit more than share test answers if you know what I’m saying but that’s for another video.

Quick correction: I don't think Arkham Asylum is a bad game, but technically speaking, it is the "worst" of the series. That doesn't mean it can't be appreciated or that it shouldn't, but just that the other games were far more ambitious. The same can be applied to Uncharted 1, although to a greater extent. Hard disagree man. I feel Asylum did stealth sections and the detective vision much better than anything else in the series. City had a much better story and great boss fights but it doesn’t do anything better than Asylum and I’d argue it does much worse than it.

Something I wish the modern Tomb Raider games would borrow from Uncharted would be that sense of thrill and enjoyment the characters get from treasure hunting, even though they're usually what could end up causing the apocalypse, but can still laugh it off. Modern Lara Croft almost always feels like she HAS to grab the treasures, as if it's a chore to her, and doesn't seem to have that same adrenaline that Nathan and friends do (although having them somehow be tied to her family is justifiable).

I actually recently played all 4 Uncharted games for the first time. So I got to play this unchain from any nostalgia or any real expectations gained from playing the future games first. What I found was a pretty solid foundation for future success. This video does a great job at laying out this game's faults and triumphs. I have often heard in the past and since playing the franchise that you should skip this one because it's the worse one; I incredibly disagree. This game is totally enjoyable even in the modern day. It has it's outdated things and all games after it surpass it but it still has aged pretty decently. I would also highly recommend you start with it because once you jump into the next one you'll get to personally experience how much the second one builds on and surpasses this one.

  • @TheRavenArchon

I agree. The game is a little more "primitive" than the later games, and clearly had a few issues that the developer took to heart to fix in later entries of the series, but it's still a solid, polished, gorgeous adventure game that almost perfectly captures the feeling and atmosphere of a summer blockbuster in video game form - something I had never experienced before this game. Later games were even better, but only because they were built on such a strong foundation that they stayed true to.

@@grantmalone I definitely disagree that the gameplay mechanics are dated. Because I think that overall, it’s the best that Uncharted has been. If you really pick it apart, the previous games had either mediocre to outright bad mechanics. Platforming was always best in small doses, and it would often glitch or not work well. Especially so in certain titles. Combat was okay, there was only one way to effectively do it though. Which was to run and gun and cover shoot, which could get really repetitive fast. In the initial trilogy, the games were best when they could combine all these elements to create the best whole with at best, mediocre pieces. Now, I’m not trying to say that Uncharted 4 has the best mechanics in gaming. Or that even a majority of your complaints are unfounded. I’m not going to tell you which games you should or shouldn’t like. Just wanted to put out my own two cents

I still remember that summer day like yesterday, and just earing the music and see the scenery of this game, gives me such comfort and happiness. This game will always have a special place to me and will always be the best in the series.

You wanted a suggestion for damage feedback, here ya go! You could keep the subtle red elements but: Have the black and white effect close in from the corners in a ring/circle so where you are most probably focusing on, the middle of the screen, still always has color. It stays colourful around about in front of Nate and his gun when he's aiming, so a good portion of the top and bottom of the screen is still coloured, where most of the sides will be greyed out when taking heavy damage. It engulfs everything in black, white and bloom when Nate dies, perhaps the edges ripple so it doesn't look so static

@@The_chosen_one23 My kids and I each had our own save points with Drake's Fortune. I wouldn't watch when they were playing so I could see everything for the first time when I played it. One afternoon I heard screaming from the basement as my boys were playing. It kept going and going. I had made them promise not to tell me anything where I hadn't played. All I got from them was "You aren't going to believe what's next!" We still laugh at that and now they are getting close to their 30's.

Great video! One of my all time favorite games. With regards to Nate not trusting Sully, in your story analysis, I interpreted it as Nate was conflicted between what kind of a person Nate knows Sully to be and what he appears to be. He even mentions that Sully is a lot of things but he's not a backstabber. I think Nate does trust Sully, but only for a brief moment was that trust put to test.

Just platinumed this game a few days ago, game was way ahead of its time back in 2007 with the climbing mechanics and visuals, and considering U2 and 3 dropped just 2 and 4 years later, giving us amazing visuals for Shambhala and Ubar. That’s some amazing game development there

When I first got my PS4 it came with Uncharted 4, I made sure I got the Nathan Drake collection and played from this game first. This is by far my favorite game of all time. I know it has its flaws but it's freakin Uncharted, the one that started it all! I got it the summer after 8th grade when I was 14 years old. I had seen the trailer for the 2nd one at E3 and looked up the first and had never been so amazed by the graphics, the gameplay, and the story. I didn't have the means to buy a new PS3 or even a used one in good condition so I learned how to fix a broken one and got one and fixed it for 150 which was better than the 300-400 the fat ones were still going for at the time. I still have that og ps3 and it works just as well. This game is what made the ps3 my favorite console during that generation.

Well this wouldn’t be completely realistic but a way to show a character’s health in a game could be shown through damage of the character, maybe have 3 different tiers of damage, Tier 1: damaged clothes Tier 2: the character starts getting scratches Tier 3: the character is dripping blood and hunched over And have a menu explaining the tiers at the beginning of the game, kinda like x men origins except u don’t heal

On an additional note, I thought there was WAY too much combat, and it's even a sort of meta commentary because Drake continuously comments on the number of enemies. Honestly I wish they cut the combat by HALF, just way too much arduous combat game play.

It’s been years now since I played Uncharted 1 all the way through but I have such good memories of playing it back when it came out and on the PS4. While I do agree that the graphics, aiming, gameplay in general got much better as the games went on, I really think this one is one of the best story wise. Just a classic treasure hunting story with plot twists, puzzles, action and the standard romance thrown in. I mean from when you land on the island to the games end the majority of the story takes place in ONE DAY 😂 I find that so funny but weirdly satisfying that the characters go through so much in less than 12 hours and save the world.
