The Elvis Presley Collector's label, Follow That Dream, is now giving us glorious studio session releases, complete and in order... but it might not have ever happened! In this episode, Jamie and John take a look at their first attempt "The Viva Las Vegas Sessions," from the discs to the book and the packaging, and how fans speaking up shaped what we have in future sessions releases!

Gents, the reference to "A.P. Nashville" is a notation by RCA engineer Al Pachucki (who worked on numerous Elvis sessions between 1968 and 1973) who was pulling songs from the Viva Las Vegas tapes for the Singer Presents Elvis Singing Flaming Star LP which hit stores in the fall of 1968. "Night Life," "Do The Vega" and "Yellow Rose of Texas/Eyes of Texas" all were used on the LP.

@@EAPSociety You're welcome. I agree with your assessment regarding the packaging is not the best for taking the cds in and out. I pop the discs in rice paper sleeves before putting them back into the box. That protects them really well. Also, I agree your desire for complete sessions released in order. FTD essentially did this the "Elvis Presley" and "Golden Records Volume 2" Classic Albums sets where they gave us all existing 1956 sessions takes form January - April of that year and the complete June 10-11, 1958 session tapes (which is the only session from the 1950s where RCA has the complete tapes). I suspect the June 1958 sessions survived the 1959 vault clean out because RCA wasn't sure which songs would put out on singles from these tapes. Given this, I don't think we will ever see a 1950s Complete Sessions release.

@@michaelcavino8009 Good call on the rice paper, actually - I may do that, too (though I digitize all my music, so they don't get played physically much). You're absolutely right on the "Elvis Presley" and "Gold 2" Classic Albums, I was both surpsied and VERY happy when those came out - and while that does probably mean that we won't get sessions releases for them, I still wouldn't mind if they did; Kevan did an incredible job on those releases, but mastering and cleanup has progressed a bit for the label since then, and it would be nice to have them as part of the broader set. I definitely don't want to see them released until close to the end of the line, of course, but I'd still like to see it.

Hey, Lior!! Thanks so much - and we're good, hope you are, too! And very glad you got those when they came out, they're pretty pricey now. Also, completely agreed on the Girl Happy sessions, though I think that will be a later release since they're still looking for missing tapes. That's a big one on our lists, too!
Great video. I like the classic album format, but also like the complete format. They messed this one up.

Thanks, Col! 😁 Yeah, they did mess this one up, but hopefully it won't stop them from doing a corrected re-release in the future (or once we build up enough support, maybe they'll license it to us - we'll do it!)
Wasn't there a story out that when Ernst was looking for these session tapes in the 90's they were were missing from the vaults. Ernst had to find them and put them back? If true we are so lucky they were found. I always find it sad that were wasn't an offical Viva sountrack LP. The material here is so strong, and much stronger then some of the other soundtracks releases at the time it's a real shame it was given a full LP release.
@EAPSociety

Yes, that's very true - the tapes were a mess when Ernst first came across them. I have nitpicks with several choices over the years, but we've been lucky to have him, overall. And I agree, this should have been an LP!

Ernst and Roger started looking for missing tapes back in 1989. There are two excellent articles by the late Ger Rijff detailing how he spent several days tagging along with Ernst and Roger searching the New York and Indianapolis vaults for session tapes. You can easily find the articles online. The missing sessions tapes for the Elvis Is Back and Viva Las Vegas sessions were only reacquired in the late 1990s. Ernst tracked these down by studying shipping invoices to determine at what point and in what city the tapes went missing. Beside Ernst and Roger, we need to pay huge debt of gratitude to Bones Howe who rescued the January 1957 binaural tapes from the dumpster of Radio Recorders back in 1960 -- he made a deal with RCA in the 1980s which led to Essential Elvis Volume 2 in 1988. In my humble opinion, the final FTD release should be a book detailing the tales and stories behind how Ernst and Roger located the missing tapes. That would be a great way to wind up the label.
I have all of the FTD session sets that have been released thus far. One thing that I have an issue with on these and other FTD releases is the censoring FTD does with Elvis’ colorful comments. It’s though they still try to perpetuate the image that was cultivated by Parker. As someone who has collected uncensored “import” releases for decades, the American Sound Sessions is a glaring example where lots of the sessions were butchered.
@EAPSociety
Жыл бұрын
The funny thing about the censorship on FTD is the inconsistency; "The Jungle Room Sessions" release had much "worse" than most, and that was left on there, but othets get edited. So far, 99% of the full-on sessions releases have been basically unedited, so hopefully that remains true when we get to the 1969 sessions properly.

It's great they're making these. My fantasy, and it's indeed just a fantasy, would be the session tapes for Hound Dog, Don't Be Cruel, All Shook Up, all that early stuff. They recorded over much of the tapes unfortunately. But at least these ones exist.
@EAPSociety

Definitely - especially now that they're complete and in order. :) And completely agreed - those sessions' tapes would be an incredible find! Maybe someday, we'll find that more are out there. You never know what might appear!
Mono masters should be included in all of these sets

Agreed, Steve! (and I will finally get a chance to call you next week, too!)
I think the master of do the vega, was on the Flaming Star camden in 1968.
The mono masters should have been included on Disc 4.
@EAPSociety

Yeah, I definitely agree there - if these are the final word on a set (which this wouldn't be, anyway, since it's not complete but for future ones), then it would be nice if the mono and stereo masters were on the first disc, with the others saved for just sessions.

Hi, Enrico! Do you mean the book "The Making Of Viva Las Vegas"? Yeah, that's gotten pretty pricey! The sessions release is still available for a pretty low price on eBay, thankfully (about $68).
Great video guys. What was the release with the best complete sessions John? Agree with you both, it can been a little frustrating at times collecting. Although love the FTD label and fully support them, but fans do need to push sometimes 👍

@@elvispresleycollectorsgroup Oh! Well, John and I both did session compilations (I did a lot of them a long time ago, and John went through updating those with the newest releases in 2022 since I haven't had a chance to), so I can definitively answer this, as well: there's really not a best release, at the moment - it still has to be pieced together from the Viva Sessions FTD, FTD's Viva vinyl album, etc. FTD's Sessions FTD does come the closest and is in the best quality (by far), but if you absoultely want it as complete as possible, it has to be edited together - and even after editing together all of that, we're still missing takes/chat/etc. It's.... very frustrating, especially to someone like me who's been compiling these things since literally the 1990's, lol

If you can get it for regular price, it's still a lot we don't have elsewhere - if you're good waiting 7ish years for a fixed version, then wait. If not, this is an ok "for now" release.

This soundtrack has never been done right and with respect ever through official releases. ALWAYS made me wonder, because of the stigma concerning Ann Margret making this such a fun movie project for Elvis to be involved in. Just my personal 2 cents.
