My very first Elvis albums were Golden Records volume 1 and 4 on vinyl back in mid 80's. Later on, I got the expanded volumes 1-5 on cd and have created Spotify and KZread Music playlists combining them all together. Kinda sucks that Volume 5 isn't available for streaming but obviously all the songs are out there. Anyway, another great episode, fellas!

Great episode!!! I bought Vol 4 at an Elvis convention in Wimbledon when I was 11 years old it was the original 60's LP for £4 ($6) it was the only album I could afford there. I like the cover, but even then I wondered about the track listing, how many of the records were actual Gold discs??? Vol 5 I don't even remember it being released and the cover as John said has nothing to do with the series. Poor marketing and again how many of the tracks went Gold?

  • @Allen-vl7zq

John, songs such as "Can't Help Falling in Love", "Return to Sender", and "Bossa Nova Baby" weren't used because they were already available on soundtrack albums. 27:20 That's why "Hard Headed Woman" wasn't included in late-1959 on Gold Records, Vol. 2. ~ However, it does seem like they could've included "Viva Las Vegas" on Volume 4 since they did include "What'd I Say" 29:05 ... oh well... go figure.

I understand the reasoning - it’s just that from a modern perspective, when we are looking at this as a compilation of hits rather than a compilation of singles that didn’t have a home on an LP - it seems shortsighted.

On the 1997 reissue of ELVIS' GOLDEN RECORDS, Volume 3 23:17 Ernst decided to toss in two U.K. hit singles with "The Girl of My Best Friend" and "Wooden Heart" as bonus tracks.

  • @Cpayne30

The original LP and CD of Gold Records 5 were rewly remixed at the time, for the most part. None of the new mixes are particularly good (bright + loads of reverb!) but they're worth a listen for the novelty. The mixes of Way Down and For the Heart are probably the most radical. Both boost Elvis' vocal much higher than the 76 mixes, but bury the drums. Kentucky Rain is a few seconds longer than some versions, but it doesn't beat the mix on "2nd to None" IMO.

RCA Victor (or Colonel Parker) had their reasons for doing it they way they did it in 1968. They wanted to avoid duplicating songs that had already been on LPs previously. They followed that same formula for Volume 3 (1963) and Volume 2 (late-1959).

Where the ball was REALLY dropped was in 1997 when Ernst Jorgensen (RCA/BMG) had the opportunity to make the 5 volumes shine with much more order and cohesiveness. Each of those five volumes should've contained 20 tracks for a total of 100 tracks instead of just 92.

~ I find it odd that they included 2 bonus tracks (Baby Let's Play House and Mystery Train) that have never been RIAA certified Gold in the U.S. 9:45 My guess is that RCA/BMG knew that those singles (along with That's All Right) had sold over 500,000 by 1997. Something sounds off on "Wear My Ring..." on there (bad transfer?) and Big Hunk doesn't fade out correctly. The 2016 also has a fuller sound IMO. Vol 1-4 were essential albums released in Elvis lifetime by the 70s they were redundant because we had greatest hits albums and the box sets. There are a few songs on the 50s set that I always skip Doncha Think Its Time and Wear My Ring Your Neck they sound a bit dated and contrived to me. All the others I love but I always skip those. If they're other peoples faves all good it just shows he did something for everybody Best Covers Vol 1 and 4 I didn't get vol 5 because there was a lot of repetition with other album's and there are more representative hits albums are out there. As for GOLD RECORDS, Volume 5 the only reason I can think of for "Don't Cry Daddy" not being included is that it's sort of a downer-of-a-song, yet another downer, "In the Ghetto", was much too huge of a hit to not include. And I'm guessing "The Wonder of You" wasn't included simply because it was a live track. -- Legitimate U.S. RIAA Gold records not included on any of these sets...
