Boy I needed that. ☺️ Your bloopers at the beginning made me laugh, and I love your “realness” in telling people, go ahead, tell me how I *should* be doing it. 😆 Also, watching pretty wool for a half hour was just relaxing. All three samples turned out beautifully and it was interesting to see how the fleece colors blended differently depending on the prep. Thank you!

Thank you. I envy your opportunity to spend a whole day in pj’s. I really enjoyed watching you finding out ‘how the wool wants to be’ - it’s not often I hear that said anymore. My favourite is the combed worsted - the swatch looks really magical. I laugh when I see spinners moaning about VM because they found a few pieces of grass. I live in Australian Merino country and some of the fleeces I’ve had the pleasure (?) of spinning have had more debris than wool 😳 I’ve even resorted to nail scissors to snip out the burrs, dead beetles, and giant grass seeds. Then there’s Alpaca - anyone who has ever prepped an uncoated alpaca fleece couldn’t possibly complain about the VM in a sheep fleece 😆 I also low-tech wash fleece in a big bowl - the only special equipment I use is lingerie bags which I pack firmly to keep the locks from moving around and felting. I push them down into the water with a potato masher. I roll in a towel and then walk on it to get the max water out. Who needs special fancy expensive equipment 🤷‍♀️

Oh wow, I want to try all these things!! I swear I can feel the squishiness through the screen!!! I can't wait until I'm able to acquire all the different prep tools, but it will be a little while yet and I have to be patient. In the meantime, I will just live vicariously through you and the rest of the Tribe who are at this stage in their journey.

I just love that moment when the fleece hits the soapy hot water. I always pat mine a little, too.

Excellent how to! The flicked locks scream baby blanket or baby item. I'm seeing sweaters or socks for the other two preps. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that uses blue dawn. :) Farm animals = outdoors. At least that's how our farm rolled. lol

That fleece was beautiful to start, but turned out just gorgeous!!

I don't tell people where I get stuff for that very reason, HA HA HA. That was a really clean fleece and the colors are SO pretty. Still love your tub, mine's square. That full bobbin is pretty. I could use a pair of extra fines but they are SO spendy. Depending on the waste and cost of the fleece, sometimes I'll save it off the combs and card it, other times it's just not worth messing with. I got pretty good at pulling a roving off the hand cards. That's one of the things I love about different preps...how different the end result is and that you get to pick and choose the look and feel you want. So cool to have wool that's from a single fleece that looks like when I mix Jacob with a white wool!!

Oh what an excellent video and so kind of you to spend the time making it for us!🙏 I enjoyed watching you wash this fabulous fleece…your method works so well and made me want to go and rummage amongst my stored fleeces…😂 The three samples were a brilliant illustration of the different prep and spinning/drafting…so great to see them knitted up! You are such an inspiration- thank you😊

This is so helpful! I need to take the time and do this with the couple of fleeces I have so I can determine what method I want to use for which projects. I am getting back to spinning after a couple of years of not spinning much. I used to have a small flock of Corriedale sheep here in Wisconsin years ago but now I just buy other peoples fleeces. I'm so out of the loop these days that I am learning or re-learning all the fiber things from your channel. I'm also a new weaver so I love your channel for that as well - I'm learning so much. Thank you!

That was nice. That fleece is gorgeous and those samples were lovely. Every time I see you prep a fleece I think that I want to do that too, but I know that I don't really want to work that hard😆.

I've got 2 Finn fleece that I need to process and spin! Lol they are both a dark brown that I saw and fell in love with! ☺️I can't wait to see what you decide to do with the rest of the Finn and what you make it into! I'm hoping that I can end up with enough for a large shawl, or a warm wooly sweater. I will have my work cut out for myself tho, I bought them both knowing that they are full of VM, but I'm not in any hurry, I have the patience and time to put into them. Hubby made me some screen drying racks for me,it's nice to have a handy man around, most of the time! Lol unless he doesn't get the "thing" you're going for, then you have to explain it several times in several different ways for him to get the picture! Lol

I used the blue one and l also spent enough on the expensive stuff to buy a small fleece. Both smelled good (but l don't mind raw smell). Both rinsed easy enough. Both fleece felt soft and clean. Think l will stay with big blue when the expensive stuff is gone. Your yarns and swatches are beautiful. What shine it appeared to have and the color was perfect! Love.

Just, so loved watching you from start to finish! I'm not a fan of wool only because I'm allergic to it 😒 but your whole process sucks me in! The color blending is especially fun start to finish with yarn. I do a tiny bit of needle felting, but I do watch you and learn along the way. Never stop your videos!!! 😍😍😍

As always you know what we need at the time we need it. My very own wool godmother 😇 Believe it or not I'm cleaning a Rambouillet fleece that I got in September. It's only a pound but I'm struggling. This video answered so many questions. Now I will go back and approach it with confidence. Also waiting to be washed is a pound of Cormo. Wish me luck😊

I love days when no one else is home and I can craft in my jammies all day long. The fleece was so clean, it must've been coated, and heavily skirted, and a neat freak sheep. I've helped skirt on 2 shearing days, even the coated fleeces had more vm than that one. Another excellent video on how to process.

Awesomeness as always!! I'm in the middle of processing some BFL for the 1st time and am amazed how easy it is! All I'm doing is flicking the locks and gonna spin from those. I don’t have the fancy combs or a carder, but I do have Havanese dogs that hate long hair. I’ve been processing small amounts of Romney fleece using my nice metal dog comb. It has long smooth teeth and I use it to comb /flick the locks. Then I can load it up and attempt to pull off roving similar to a hackle. It’s been a great entry into playing with fleece. It produces something between combed and carded prep. Not suited for more than a few oz here and there, but great way to start with no $$$.

I love how committed you are to sampling. This is one of my favourite things to do with spinning- sample a fleece lots of different ways… put the fleece in a pillow case and into stash… move onto next fleece and sample. 😂 turns out I really like sampling.

Beautiful fleece. I liked that you showed so many techniques for processing/spinning. I do enjoy buying ready to spin braids, but there's nothing like washing and spinning a raw fleece. I also usually use Dawn for washing. 😉

Thank you! I learned a lot from this video. I have a pound of fiber (already cleaned) I received (giveaway) around a year ago and this is giving me some ideas of how to process it. I want to do some natural dyeing with it and hopefully not felt it. Seeing the differences between carding, flicking, and combing was super helpful. Also, I learned what flicking was. I saw where someone used metal hair picks to comb wool and I have a dog slicker brush I could probably use to flick locks. Excited to experiment to see how I like doing all of this.

Oh my gosh 💕💕 she is one pretty girl! I like the way you show how easy and inexpensive it can be to wash your own fleece 😃 I think I would have a hard time choosing how the end prep for the wool would be I love all 3 preps💕💕💕 next year I hope to try my first fleece 😃

If you're having trouble getting all the lanolin out, it's usually because the water isn't hot enough or the fleece is packed in too tightly.

I learn so much from watching you. I am still a beginner and new more time to spin. Although it’s doubtful that I will prep a raw fleece myself, understanding how it’s done and the different results is so helpful! I plan to buy a fleece and take it to the mill that is near me. I just don’t know what to get. 😕

Loved watching you take it from dirty to spun, maybe one of these days I can find out if there are any sheep around where I live. (I know we have a couple of alpaca places)

Great video, Finn is such a versatile fibre to spin, though I always heard it felts super easily. We don’t have Dawn over here in the UK, but I’ve been using Fairy Liquid on the BFL mule fleece I’m processing and it does just fine. I diy’d my combs, you do get a lot of waste but it’s great for re-filling couch cushions.

Well there's no right or wrong. Singer people do like to spin it in the grease. I'm just not a big fan

@@FiberLoveDiary i would soak/wash, rinse and repeat til clean. Lanolin and i don't seem to get along for in the grease. At least washing til i stop breaking out works 😁

I have 3 pounds of a silver gray Romney fleece from a local farm/friend. I washed it similar to your method a few weeks ago (Northen Michigan near Alpena 😉)when it was warm and sunny then laid it out on screens that I took from my large windows. It was dry in only a few hours! I’m so happy you did this video as I’ve been trying to figure out how to prep for making the wool into my first sweater from fleece project. I’m going to try all 3 of the methods with this fleece and keep a record of it. A question for you…. For a sweater which prep would you use? What goes into decision making for choosing the wool, prep methods, and spin type for a sweater? Are these questions a whole new video topic for you???☺️☺️☺️ PS this video was released on my 60th birthday! Exactly what I needed! Thank you! ☺️😃💕

People sometimes do. I usually find that the dirtiest parts, nepps, and shortcuts end up in the waste. I do save it and use it in my garden

Wow, such a beautiful fleece! I tried the expensive brand. I wasn't really that impressed for the price. I think you are spot on with your method. Looks easy enough that way. Now all I want for christmas is an electrical carder..... (and a bigger house so I have space to put it in! 🤣)

That was amazing to watch, definitely need to get some combs. Which combs do you like best, I see them with two or three rows of teeth, is there a reason that you would need three over two rows of teeth? Sorry so full of questions.

do you have a video that shows how you got those 2 spins onto your hands to be able to ply them together? that looked like a very cool process you have

The crochet combed took so much longer but so worth the results

Hi, Trish! It was so helpful seeing three different preps and spins. Each was so different from the next. Even the colors of the finished knits and yarns varied so widely. I wonder would the color have been more consistent if you had used a larger sample, say four ounces vs. the 1.5 ounces? I'm new at this so bear with me, LOL! If the entire fleece was processed the same way, would the knit piece have a more homogenous appearance? Thanks for all of this insight!

Those are beautiful spins. I really like the defined look of the combed, it would make good cables! So what did you feel gave you the best result- or the result you would want to use the most?

Love the gray in that fleece! The first fleece I bought in the spring was a white Finn ram, so soft. I also have fleece that’s a Finn crossed with something (can’t remember what) and it’s been so great to learn on. Both from farms local to me in Victoria bc, in case anyone is interested. Also, I didn’t want to lose the combed top waste so I’ve been adding it to wool I’m carding with hand carders. That’s ok, right? I’m not messing up my final yarn by doing that? I also thought maybe I could try needle felting with it or something.

How do the prep methods relate to each other time wise? At what point does an electric drum carder seem worth the expense? I know it's different for everyone. But some considerations would be great. Lovely wool! So cool to get the different shades off a single fleece.
