I Bought a Classic Carder Drumcarder. What Did I Learn? Do I Love It? Is it Worth the Price?

I know it's crazy, but I had a margarita and then bought a Classic Carder drumcarder from the UK. I hope you'll watch to see how I liked it, why I almost cried, and how it does both with batts and raw fleece! Do I love it? Did I think it is worth the price? Did I learn anything? Come see!
I know someone will ask. I bought the 72 dpi version!

After writing my last comment, I ask my daughter if she thought I was being irresponsible to be thinking of buying one of these (not as big though) considering my new financial situation after the loss of my husband. She said no, that I have always loved spinning from batts and my carder is really hard to use. Then she said she likes to spin from batts as well, but does not make them because it is so hard to use the carder we have, and then she offered to go halves with me since we will be roommates for the foreseeable future. So I just ordered the High Sided Standard size carder, I am so excited, I can't wait. Yay!!!

As someone who is living with my mom and my grandmother, this is something we would all do. Anytime one of us wants somethings, we split it or we just buy it for the other person. Im a 32 year old adult disabled child..lol. Congrats on your new purchase and enjoy it, I wish my mom and gran spun yarn, too!! I would love to someday knit crochet or spin with them. I have handcart that I use to make rolags and tiny batts but I hope someday I will be able to get a drum carder!! They are way out of our price range but I do know there are plans you can buy to make your own that are cheaper. If only I was handy..hahaha. anyways, have a lovely day and stay safe!
"I have a good reason. You're going to think I'm crazy, but i have a good reason" - me to my husband every time I buy another raw fleece
Hurray for a successful UK product trial 😃
So excited to see this as the company is literally 10 mins away and I’ve been looking at these… Exciting!!
I have had a Classic Carder (about 4 years of heavy use of lots of type of fiber) and I have three drums, one for very fine and two normal ones - that way if I want to card colours, or I have a fine merino, etc. It is a great carder, as you said, excellent communication with the maker, the carder has no problems, absolutely none. I have spun raw wool, very dirty (vm) wool it is just an excellent machine. One thing, do not use the dolffer to get the stray fiber out, you should use a 1.5 mm needle so the teeth are not damaged. I take it to wool events. It is very . very good!
Best carders ever had one for three years
I have had mine for years. I love it. Watch the video. It’s informative.
I have a classic carder and I absolutely love it
I've had that exact same carder for over a year now, and I love it. Still works as well as the day I got it and it's seen some use! I highly recommend the brush that slots onto the back of the carder - you can pack more on it using that although it is a bit noisier. They also sell a handy little brush too that I use to clean the drum and licker-in.
I love how quiet this carder is and it seems like it works very smoothly not getting stuck, or requiring a lot of strength to operate it.
Now you have to test them all! ALL! AAAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!!
Love, love, LOVE watching you card blends!!! MORE!!! ❤
I just received my first drum carder in the mail the other night. I have already used it several times and LOVE it. Still a lot to learn but this video helped me some. Thank you for sharing your thoughts❤
It's working like a hot knit cutting butter .... I'm impressed
I am so glad it turned out well for you. I have an old carder that was made in the 1970's. It is very hard to turn and some of the screws are completely unturnable, so I can't even take it apart to try to clean it and try to make it easier to use. In fact I have to clamp it down to even use it because it is hard to turn. I have been really wanting to buy a new one for years, but they are so expensive that I just keep on using this one. Maybe I can afford to buy one of the smaller ones of these. I am looking at them now and trying to decide if it is going to be doable in my current situation. Thank you for sharing this video. Blessings.

have you tried 3 in 1 oil on the screws to see if you can get them to turn (might take letting them sit over night after oiling them to break things loose) and I wonder if it’s hard to turn because fiber is stuck in the handle? If it’s not something you can do, you might call your local high school and see if they teach machine shop and if they do leave a message for the shop teacher asking if would be willing to look at it to see if he could get the screws out, if he or she can’t maybe able to give you the name of a local business that could help. Just suggestions, but if you really just want a new one, don’t show this to your spouse and buy one anyway ;p.

Very good demonstration and yeah, that’s a sweet batt. I have a Brother standard size hand crank….I bought it used and had to adjust the licker away from the carder roller…..I do like it and as I have no intention to go into production, the slower pace suits me. But I confess….the size of that roller has me drooling!
This is so exciting. I’ve been wanting to buy a drum carder for quite some time, but really want to try some out first.
Thank you!!!! That was a great demonstration! A drum carder is on my wish list and this will have to be a contender

Thanks for sharing that! Looks like a really nice carder.
Oh! I’m so envious! I would love to have the extra $$ to get a drum carder. I made my own and it works great but maybe someday! Thank for sharing!
Super cool Trish!
Love it! Thanks for all the info, I am definitely saving up money to get a carder one day, so great to see different ones in use.
Thanks for sharing this experience with us. I'm glad you love it. I would have been sad if you didn't like it by the end of the video. I'll keep this one on my radar for when I eventually get a drum carder. ❤️
Hopefully I will get one someday. I would really love one. This one looks really nice. So glad you like it. Demonstration was great,
I watched a ton of carding videos before I bought my Classic Carder, and it seemed to be the least likely to get gummed up with fiber on the licker, #1 reason I chose it. The only issue I have is that the pins are a bit delicate so I use the porcupine quill (included with mine) instead of the doffer to pull off the stuck on fiber.
For best results with this carder is, less is more and slower is better xx

I couldn't recommend one made overseas without trying it, but we have a lot of non-American friends!
I bought this! I’m so excited, it should get here in mid January
So buying drum carders under the influence turned out well.
I bought a doffer pin from them but I didn't get it. Emailed them sent it out, received both on the same day. I wrote and told them to change me again, they told me, no it's fine. Very nice experience, they do have electric carders too.
@FiberLoveDiary

I could not splash it on another electric one. This was bad enough 🤪
Glad you are happy with it. I like the size of it I have a smaller Strauch with a brush attachment. If I press heavily on the brush, it usually removes the fiber caught on the licker. If not, I use something to push it back on the drum. I do, however, have a lot stuck on the big drum each time I use it. It is probably at least 10 years old. Much success with it. I loved the video. It's a beautiful batt! God bless.
I love my classic carder, I’ve had it for years and never had any issues. Great video btw. 😊
Very helpful
I have the one which is the next size down and I love love love it. The quality of the materials and workmanship is amazing. I'm so glad I bought it. I'm sure you can find space to keep yours, it's fairly portable too, I like to sit outside and use mine of an evening.
Did you get the porcupine quill? It really helps taking all the random left over off. I use a hairbrush cleaner tool from Ulta to really clean it.

I have a compact Classic Carder. I started with a 72 tpi drum and recently bought a 100 something drum, and I switched them out. I really like that I could change just the drum.
That’s how smooth my wool bliss hero drum carder is… when I use the small brush to smooth it down, I flick off the few stray pieces that are on the lickerin and it stays clean. So nice. I can see why build up on the lickerin would drive you nuts!
That’s an awesome carder! Your first batt was beautiful 😍

Thanks for sharing! I have a strauch petite and have been thinking about getting a wider carder. Was strongly considering the brother as I think the motorized option might be better/easier. Hate that you have not had a positive experience as a dealer. Pros/cons on electric vs manual?

Thanks so much for showing us. I'm saving up for a smaller Classic Carder so it's good to know it's a good one. I couldn't quite tell.... did you get it with a finishing brush? Do you think a finishing brush would be worth the extra cost?

Hello! i am in the market for a drum carder but i don't know what to get or what to spend for my needs. do you have an episode that talks about this?
I've been going back and forth comparing the Classic to the Brother and have heard good things about both. Price is also a concern and since I'll just be able to get one, I want the absolute best for the money. I appreciate your review and will definitely be watching to hear how you like it in the next couple of months. I'm sorry to hear that you weren't treated right by Brother, that always concerns me as well, although I've heard their customer svc is very good. Someone mentioned Clemes and I'd like to hear more about them as well, they'll be in Wisconsin in Sept, I might go check them out too. Thanks Trish!

It's nice that you could narrow it down at least. It's hard being such a big purchase that you rarely get to try out.
what are your thoughts on not having that brush on it like ashford have?
Question from a exceedingly left handed person (I have trouble doing anything coordinated with my right). Can the handle go on the left side of the carder?
I didn’t realize that carder was a thing, I thought classic was just a style, so now this one is on my radar along with Majacraft because Majacraft has its gears enclosed so the fiber can’t get inside to jam things up but it’s more expensive, it is manual, at least the one I looked at, but they call the gear mechanism a fusion engine? Looks like it works well too.

Super cool! Some day, maybe some day, a carder would be in my future. My big question is, what do you knit with the one of a kind batts with so many different fibers? Does the yarn primarily become good color work knitting options or do you use it things as well?
