    Good review! I’ve got both a Chi and the Higo X in ironwood. I bristle whenever I hear that they’re “overpriced”; they’re not. They’re expensive, yes, but that’s reflected in the quality of materials and workmanship - and the fact that no other knife maker - to my knowledge - is commercially producing such an incredible tool that is also a work of art. My third will be on the way soon and will likely be the Ryo or maybe a fixed blade. The latter would be a timesaver allowing me to cut entire phone books in half rather than slicing individual pages! 😝

    Rockstead seems to be getting a lot more coverage of late. Obviously there’s my videos, but Dutch Bushcraft Knives revealed 3, yes 3 fixed blades on their channel yesterday and a new channel, King Pope Ceaser showed 4 folders recently. He’s got some amazing knives, by the way!

    In Japanese, "Chou" I'd pronounced like the second syllable of "Poncho" . "Chō" would also be a valid spelling. Depending on what characters are used to write it Japanese, it could mean "Butterfly", "Leader", or "EXTREME".

    You know they have this proprietary method where they have a guy who sits there and stares at each side of their knives for hours upon hours, flipping them over every 30 mins or so. And that guy doesn't come cheap. He gets paid like hundreds of dollars hourly. So I totally understand where the cost goes.

    I have the rockstead Chou with the wave pattern. After hearing and seeing so much about the company but never having the opportunity to handle one I bit the bullet and got this one as it was the only one in my price range at the time. When I received it, visually it was a sight to behold. The polish on it is something that cannot be described with words. For lack of a better analogy, it’s like trying to describe sex to someone who hasn’t had it. The polish is another level all on its own. Ludicrously beyond perfect. However, for me and my uses at least, the performance was most disappointing. I find the edge geometry extremely poorly at slicing. It’s extremely thick behind the edge and the trailing point makes the material you are cutting want to slide right off it. It was sharp out of the box. Not hair popping but you could drop a piece of paper on its edge onto the blade and it would cut around a 1/2 inch in. After putting it through maybe less than a meter of cardboard it struggled to slice paper. As per the guidance, I made a strop with denim stretched over some wood and loaded it with pikal metal polish. Which is actually the brand they recommend. That brought the edge back a bit but barely hair popping. I really wanted the Tei in zpd as well but based on my experience with this I’m struggling to bring myself to drop £1800 on a knife that may not live up to the hype. They have a life time warranty and will sharpen it for you if you send it back to the factory but I’m struggling to justify the shipping costs only to get it back to sort of sharp.

  • @metal_complex

    I own and use a rockstead. I've shown the edge performance on camera on multiple livestreams after weeks of use. Its still slicing paper to this day. My experience is the polar opposite of yours.

  • @joshuaanderson7511

    @joshuaanderson7511

    Well, the one you bought was not ZPD steel, and also a fixed blade. The folding action on these guys (never handled one, but what I've heard) is part of the price, and the zpd steel probably plays a part in the seemingly missing edge retention and sharpness. Also, remember that cardboard, however innocent it may seem, is a very aggressive material that will take life of any knife. The demonstrations they use on KZread are zpd steel, and I dont remember seeing them use cardboard. They can be bashed into bamboo repeatedly without loss in edge quality, but again, not drug through an aggressive material which likely degraded the grind. I've never handled one but I do want one, I can afford it right now, two months ago, and even two months from now, but I'm with you on this, dropping that much money can hurt when you dont know exactly what your getting. You might find somebody at a blade show that will let you handle it so you can decide for yourself, but good luck convincing them without serious collateral lol.

  • @MRWKFClark

    @MRWKFClark

    @@joshuaanderson7511 yeah I cut a lot of card board at work and sheet material. I’m well aware of the impurities in cardboard and how quickly it can dull knives. Cutting the same type of card board, it’s performance was akin to AUS8. From what I’ve read YXR-7 is a high speed steel mainly used for the teeth on lathes mills. I’ve had a lot more edge retention from other steels cutting the same type/brand of cardboard. The sharpness is Ok for woodwork but not slicing thin stuff. As a test I also carved a bit of wood after stripping and had the same loss of sharpness as cardboard. Don’t get me wrong. I still love the brand and want to get one of the folders. Just saying I was very underwhelmed with my entry level model.
