UNBOXING a Copper Age "Grail" Newsstand Comic - Are They Actually More Rare, even Pre-1987?

Фильм және анимация

In this video I share with you guys my recent MASSIVE GRAIL UNBOXING of the greatest comic book of all time....Darkhawk 1, in a newsstand CGC 9.6. I felt like this was a good opportunity to revisit a topic often discussed in our hobby, are Newsstand comics worth the premium and are they more rare? There has been a lot of coverage of this topic and a lot of people have made the conclusions that pre 1987, they aren't worth getting...but is that still how the market behaves? Does that seem to be the case that direct edition comics pre 1987 are more rare? Well in this video I dive in to see what I can find.
Hope you guys enjoy the video!

Very Rare they are. ... If everyone knew or was maybe shown a video of back in the days how these comics and other papers and magazines were tied up together and handled during delivery they would understand. ... From the rope lines holding them together to the trucks throwing the stacks off the back and sliding up and around to the concrete sidewalks leading to the newsstands, to the stacks being kicked down steps down to the train stations platform. if you lived in a city, the rain storms and snow and windy pages flapping when stacked in or outside the newsstands, I'm sure somewhere out there or up here on youtube there is that one video showing them being mistreated from production all the way through distribution on the back of an opened back truck till reaching destination on a sidewalk, to later being picked up and displayed when the newsstand owner showed up to put them on display etc. ...

You’re spot on about newsstands vs direct. The only argument that I can see for paying a premium for pre1986 newsstand copies is that newsstands in high condition pre1986 may be rare due to fact that they made it through the gauntlet of people handling them while on the rack in grocery stores. I think there should be a premium paid for 1979 direct edition. As for Darkhawk……..it’s Sleepwalker for me. Thanks for the video.

My favorite thing about looking at books on eBay is that a lot of sellers are calling all newsstands rare. Whereas most of us know…newsstands only started to become rare in the late 90’s. Up until then, newsstand copies were the dominant book. And you can’t explain this to these people cause they have NO IDEA what you’re talking about. They’re just trying to charge a premium price for something that’s presumed to be rare, but really isn’t.

you know, after watching your shows long enough...I need to get one now: Darkhawk! Or, I might have one. I will check unless I gave it to the grandkids 😏. I believe in the newsstand versus direct versus variant (UK, Canadian, language), if you are just collecting the book, most collectors look at their budget and buy the best price. If you collect/invest, you do the same...look at the budget, etc....If everyone is artificially inflating one type over another, merchants will try to take advantage of that if possible. To add to your examples, ASM194 is the same way. 9.8 and 9.6 are about the same, within $100 of each other. Only the "Mark Jewlers" has real value over the two, and with the softening of the market, I've been buying the newsstands at a real discount. Even cheaper than directs. it all seems to balance out in the end. Let hope someone wants to buy these one day in the near future. 2023 is going to be a soft recession. I see newsstand bargains on the horizon. 🥳

Really solid comparison, but the only qualifier I can add, for pre-88 books, is that sellers would be hoarding newsstand over direct which would muddy the waters a bit. Still, solid video.

It's funny.. when I was a kid I remember my friend pointing out that he could tell I bought my comics from the grocery store because it had the barcode on the lower left corner... And he lauded that it was more upscale to buy from a comic shop where you got the cool image of your favorite character. After that I always bought my comics from a comic shop and never from the grocery store! Who knew we would flip it all around and now prefer the grocery store comic! But it's true if you look for wolverine number one 1982 in newstand is much more rare and hard to find, 8 out of 10 copies is a direct edition.

Def some interesting thoughts regarding higher grade news stand editions and the evidence is showing. I’m also fascinated by the color differences between direct and stand editions from the 80’s and 90’s and often notice more vibrant colors on the news stands, though it does vary.

I collect McFarlane and it's weird that a lot of the McFarlane directs have little additional McFarlane drawings where the UPC should be, but the newsstand still go for more. You'd think that more art by the Toddfather would increase the value of the book over some stupid straight lines.

I’m big on 9.6 newsstands because most 9.6 are on the fence for a 9.8 at a fraction of the price with the added bonus of the potentially higher premium later with a newsstand edition. For me, I don’t like spending too much on graded books so it’s a nice compromise for those more expensive books.

I didn't live anywhere near a comic shop, so I only had access to newsstand copies from the time that direct editions first appeared through most of 1987. I sort of chuckle now that newsstand editions have become a thing in the collector market. I normally don't seek out US newsstand copies, unless I see one from the mid-1990s or later. Last month, I nabbed a CGC 9.6 of DC Versus Marvel 1 just because it was a newsstand. Funny that you would open with the Darkhawk newsstand. The copy of that issue that I bought when it was released in January of 1991 was a newsstand, which meant I was on holiday break from college in my hometown, which didn't have any comic shops. So, I probably bought it at a confectionery in our downtown that sold comics. Also funny that one of your examples was X-Factor 6. That was one of the first direct editions I ever bought off the rack. Normally, I would've purchased a newsstand copy in my hometown, but at the time it was released in April of '86, my mom and I visited my sister at college, and we eventually ended up at a mall that had a newspaper and magazine shop with shelf after shelf of new comics. The editions they sold were through the direct market. I remember being confused as to why there was a Spider-Man head and the price encased in an "M" on the cover.

Back in the day, my friends and I were all doing our best to eliminate the newsstand varieties in favor of the direct editions simply because they LOOK better! Now, when we look again and consider the total percentage of all printings and realized I may have personally hurt my accidental (hey, I WAS a kid then!) investment. So now, I do sometimes purchase both.....just in case, you know? Now, I'm waiting on the world to recognize the ridiculously low printings of Silver Age pence copies. Some real deals out there, comparatively speaking.

I usually get both direct and newsstand books any time I have the option. I also like Double covers, when you can find them, Mark Jewelers variants and lately, I've been on a tear for UK/Pence Variants. CGC does include UK/Pence Variants on their census and they are quite rare indeed. I've got a smoking copy of Tales of Suspense #40 UK edition (complete, no tears, IMO a 5.5 - 6.0) and there are only 12 copies in total on the census, with only one non restored copy being a 6.0 grade. I'm less concerned about valuation and as an OG fanboy of the Marvel Silver age, I know appreciation comes with a set of variables, the biggest being the test of time. Collect what you like to read, keep 'em clean and tight and ultimatley get them graded as you keep a reader copy somewhere in your collection. Just my 2 cents. Best to all.

Newsstand will always be the B cover variant. Direct is the main A cover and I will always buy the main cover before an overpriced variant. The biggest was the change on the early marvel books when Newsstands started coming to market and Marvel would change the corner box and number design. Back then it was more of a change than just the UPC box.

I used to pick up cpv newsstands from my corner store in the 80s. I think it depends on the store. But i still have all of those books and they're immaculate. The store owner had a great set up, stored them with care and probably didn't let anyone handle them aggressively.

Depends on the publication year. A lot of collectors havent read up about the history of the Direct Market, including print runs. In the late 70s/early 80s DM copies were only 10-40% of the print run (increasing year on year). Hence even if you factor in the mishandling of Newsstand copies, it stills DM that could be rarer/just as rare. Apparently the print run reached a 50/50 tipping point circa 1985/6. Then you have pence (UK variants), which are estimated to be 5% of the print run. Sounds rare right? Except not really. Rarity depends on the supply/demand ratio. 200,000 cents copies with 250,000 readers, as against 10,000 pence with 8,000 readers means the cents copy is comparatively rarer. Nobody know the precise stats on supply and demand, but what we DO know is that most UK and US buyers prefer the look/authenticity/whatever of cents copies hence cents copies command a 30-40% premium over pence. So just because there’s a smaller print run of something doesnt mean it commands a higher price. Speaking for myself as a UK based collector i have no interest at all in pence copies and most serious collectors here dont want them.

I'm astonished that any 30+ years old book can grade 9.8 / newsstand. The journey traveled by such a book before settling in 9.8 graded case is mind boggling. Therefore such a book is worth significantly more on account of rarity and exclusivity . On top of that some key books are way more rare in newsstand period.(ASM 300, 252 and Secret Wars 8 in 9.8 or Wolverine limited 1-4 newsstand are such examples)

Think of your favorite band: which would you prefer: their first album released on vinyl when they were struggling? Or the CD version released by the major label they just signed with? I prefer news stand copies for the reasons you mentioned! I remember seeing kids folding comics in the spinner racks to see what was behind them instead of simply lifting them up! This was disposable entertainment that was often rolled up and put in a back pocket! Direct sales editions only felt precious if the shops didn't order enough copies, like SPAWN in the late 2,000s!

Love your videos and appreciate your detailed analysis across multiple areas. As for newsstands though, I think it is just another case of variant mania that the market needs to create to generate interest in books that are not that relevant. I think it is much worse than a variant cover or a 2nd print as the only difference on the cover is the UPC code. Seems not relevant to me so I won't buy based on that, just on the overall price.

  • @XMHOOD

    @XMHOOD

    Жыл бұрын

Well, I think it's all in the hype/popularity of the product as well as the buyer's preferences. Newsstands are popular, thus the price goes up, even though in some cases Newsstand actually represents up to 50% of copies produced which means customers pay more only because the demand is high. Not because Newsstands are rare. Whitman Variants (I have one, that's Eternals #8) or Pence Variants are more rare than Newsstands but first they aren't popular as Newsstands and then people usually don't like changes on the cover especially the pricing section which isn't the case for the Newsstands. The only comics that goes higher than the normal prices are the ones with printings errors like Secret Wars #1 or comics that have double (or triple/quadruple) covers.
