UNBELIEVABLE! There are SILICONES stuck in the Oil Pickup! Unopened Motor | Toyota 86 FA20 ISSUES

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is absolutely unbelievable!
Decided to do this unordinary oil change and was told there might be SILICONES in the oil pickup. And Potentially it could have gotten in the Motor/Engine and will cause irreversible damage!!!
Mine is a 2014 model Toyota 86, bought it brand new, the engine has not been opened or touched.
Had no RECALL done whatsoever, nor have it been any accident.
And yet, for the past years I've been hearing FA20 engines are blowing up Left Right and Center~
And the damage caused are either Spun Bearing, could be due to oil starvation!
Now this all makes sense!!! These Silicones might not look harmful, but when its inside your engine it could possibly block or get stuck in some components and will cause huge damage! And YET, Toyota SA hasn't done anything, or said anything about it.
When we take to them, they aren't aware at all!
BUT All in All,. luckily I caught it soon, and could possibly be the cause of my Tapping noise!
PLEASE Toyota 86/FRS/BRZ Owners, please go and do a checkup in the oil pickup when you doing an Oil Change! Better be safe than Sorry!

I'm in the US and my brother has one of these FA20 engines in his 2013 FRS. I've seen several videos where the silicone debris are protruding through the screen on the oil pickup and thought it was due to having the spring recall done. My brother hasn't had his done and won't due to some engines blowing up from mechanics that don't apply the correct amount of sealer to the covers. The amount silicone that is getting through the screen on your oil pickup is getting caught by the oil filter and shouldn't be enough to damage your engine. That said, it shouldn't be there though and the manufacturer should have addressed this item. Killer B makes a proper oil pickup for these engines and I advise you get one installed for oil volume.

Makes you wonder, why they dont convert over to a traditional pan gasket instead of rtv. That way you can easily drop the pan change the gasket if need be. Instead of scraping and cleaning it each time

Yeah man, but the thing is Toyota probably....Doesnt know about this We had about 15 cars that went to get it checked, year models range 2012 to 2015 ones I think, and all have it. Some a lot and big fat pieces and some are small amount like mine. Crazy, and recently had a mechanic rebuilding a FA20 and the oil pick up was basically clogged, and oil starvation happened

Amazing these problems go this far back with rtv…this seems like a huge Subaru problem. A bunch of guys are having this issue with their 2022 gr86s. So Subaru engines from 2013 and beyond have this issue? Crazy. So the Brz, which had the same rtv issue as far back as 2013, doesn’t get a design change to fix this, they shove the same motor and oil pan design into the Toyota gr86, and surprise same oil pan oil pick up issue. Toyota and Subaru, how can you in good conscience know about this problem and let it happen.

Hey Aaron, I did a DIY on tearing down this my motor. I technically went through 3 FA20 motors 2013/2014/2017 2013 motor is blown at 98605 miles due to spun rod bearings 2014 motor with 17k miles and put at least 70k miles was the best working engine I’ve had, until the valve spring recall... RSM Toyota assumed my motor was a 2013 car all-round, but it’s my fault that I didn’t say it’s a 2014 motor. Technically, the 2014 FA didn’t need valve springs replaced, little did I know I just thought getting new valves spring replaced, I’d be fine. I was dead wrong and turns out that my 2014 motor started knocking after 13k-15k miles... Toyota wanted to bend me over backwards for 8k plus tax for a rebuild. 2017 motor was from a guy the buys a whole BRZ/FRS from an auction and sell for parts... His name is Rodrigo and he’s on the forums somewhere, it’s a hit or miss and I was disappointed wanted this motor specifically because of the Aluminum Manifold... then again, this is where I found excessive amounts of metal shavings. This is where I knew I open a can of worms... I decided to pull out my motor and did a lot of inspecting. Your video shows the same exact issue that I came across after a long time of figuring it out where the problem is coming from... But now I just bought a long block from GCH longblock racing and I’m fully aware that this “4th motor” is under race applications. My main goal is to go supercharger or turbo on ONLY low boost for the longevity of the rebuilt motor.

Good God, sorry that you had to go through with all that crap. When I first heard the bulletin about the damn valvespring recall, I thought, I'm glad that I don't have to do it.....but I also had the same thought as you, well...it wouldn't be a bad idea hey? Since its a new valvespring so technically it should make my current motor stronger? I went to toyota plenty of times to see if they can do it on mine, even though they said there is no need for a recall for 2014 models, and a few months later I heard people are getting bearing knocks, and blocked oil pick ups etc....so I was glad I didn't go ahead or find a way to get the recall done. I'm still on my first motor *TOUCH WOOD* FINGERSCROSSED* that it will still be fine. I have cleaned my pickup like in the video, and I still need to clean it again, I'm 7000km in since the clean up. changed to Liqui Moly 5w40 oil and I used ceretec for that extra protection, I beat on the car once a while to make sure there aren't carbon build ups. In South Africa, we don't have E85 pumps, so we all need to buy E98/E100 Ethanol in 25L drums, and mix it with our crappy 95Ron Unleaded fuel. So for me I'm on OFT stage 1 tune, with about E15 - E20 of ethanol mixture! Car runs beautifully, fuel trims are great, no pulling of timing, IAM stays happy....so this is all I can do at the moment. I have a turbo kit sitting in the storeroom, so I might fit it and like you, run ONLY LOW LOW boost for reliability and longevity of this stock motor. My partner and I are busy developing a custom oil pick up for the car, very similar to KillerB design, and I have done quite a bit of research, and upgrading to a good oil pick up will solve majority of the oil starvation issues of this motor hey, i suggest you look into it.

Many forums offer different explanations and solutions, has anyone managed to resolve theres if you have these issues?

  • @Aaron86Productions

Hi, the cricket is normal, it comes from the high pressure fuel pump. And the cricket either becomes loud or soft will be dependant on the fuel and it's additives that's inside Its not a major problem, just irritating. (I still have that noise, but found one garage that helps removing the noise) As for the burning smell, it's normal, sometimes it's a mix of clutch, and exhaust and the heat in the engine bay causing it to smell. After a long while of driving eventually it will be gone. You will just need to sometimes push the car hard, as the header does get hot and surrounding materials will let off smell also, eventually will be gone. (Initially I have the same smell, but after driving the car hard most of the time it's gone) The squeaking of the clutch pedal is by the clutch master cylinder, where there is a rubber cover. Just need to lube that area up. Let some one press the clutch and you listen and check by engine bay, you'll know what I'm talking about. (Still have that noise for years now, as I have an exhaust so coildnt hear it when driving, but will probably do a video about it)

They quoted 8k for used less mile engine but the customer is not satisfied because he never drive like a madman n send to private workshop instead .. Luckily the custome have the front view camera and have record of it after the valve spring job n get his refund for new engine block. It was very messup job lawyer involved etc. And it was less than 500km or miles after the valve job. So much cringe with the way that technician decided to take the oil pan off. I would not do it that way at all. You can see the damage done to your short block. Any dents, dings, will be covered with the RTV from the oil pan, but to then pry it off with the screw driver? no way bro. I had to look away. Honestly, that much RTV is not surprising. It's from assembly and it looks like the oil pick up did its job. If you are blown away by the RTV there, wait until you fix your timing cover leak and see how much is used. And its not out of line to use that much too, its in the Tech Manual. Also, you are going to get some RTV in the oil pan anyway if your technician put too much, and then put oil in too fast before it cures properly.

Hi There! Yeah the way they did it does look scary and very cringe worthy, but I made sure there wasn't any damages to the block, they later made sure the surface wasn't dented or scratch and they did sand it down properly to make sure the silicone will stick and cure properly. They in fact did over 20 86s already, and all haven't had issues, and some even went back for the 2nd time to get it checked, and one or two found another Black silicone inside the oil pick up, and not the grey ones these guys used for the oil pan. Apparently they used those racing performance silicones for it, do they dry and cure very quickly

Aaron86 Productions does the sound only happen during cold start or all the time? Valve lash is only set with the motor out of the car. I’ve seen also on automatics that the vacuum pump behind the passenger side intake cam making noise. As far as warranty for the silicone, we can’t really help clean it unless the customer approves it as preventative maintenance like what you did.

Hi, I started having this tapping noise during cold start and when driving, it was extremely irritating and most noticeable around 2000 to 3000rpm, especially when you free rev in neutral. I did a lot to try and see if it's the oil, but after I removed the silicone as a preventative maintenance, the sound died down a lot. And not very noticeable now compared to few months before. Therefore I wasn't sure what is the cause, the car is stock, nothing has been done to it since new.

Before the silicone removal, I tried checking the sound. As we are right hand drive, the sound was mostly from left side where the high pressure fuel pump is. It's somehow more audible when you inside the car than hearing it from the engine bay. At one time you can hear it more via the wheel arch area. After the silicone the noise is less and sometimes you can't even hear it But it's definitely still present when you cold start....

Hey bud, don't think they can or would. Reason being a faster production and cost effect process of using a sealant to seal the gaps than using a gasket. In the long run they save more cost, reduce the parts needed and reduces time to produce with trial and error in mind. But the amount of silicones will now also depends on cars now. Sadly, those that bought it, will need to clean and check their pickup.
