The "sword" in the hospital attack is not actually a sword. It's a thin slice of bamboo sharpened. If you put in slow motion you can actually see the "katana" shattering when it hits the arm of the guard. Brazilian self defense channel "Núcleo Dharma" made a good video clarifying this incident

True story I know from a former hospital security guard who used rattan swords in the SCA. Another guard used to mock him for being a nerd fighting with toy swords, until the night those skills mattered. A guy too jacked up on something to experience pain or fear grabbed a scalpel and was going for anyone in reach. The nerd-hating guard plunged in fast, lost his baton and was cut a bit. The nerd came *almost* within reach of Scalpel, moving aggressively to draw his attention from the nurses. Nerd yelled "HEY", tossed his keys just to the left of Scalpel, and brought up his baton in a rising snap that tapped the back of Scalpel's head hard enough to make him drop the blade and be cuffed without serious damage to Scalpel or anyone present. Sometimes sword or staff skills are useful.✌🖖

As an SCA fighter myself, I can confirm that taking a headshot from someone trained with rattan swords would be pretty much lights out without a helmet, lol. They train you to strike HARD. I got tapped on the ass once and had a huge deep-purple bruise for a week. I can't imagine getting your bell rung without a proper helmet.

Speaking as a former bouncer you have to accept some risks and if someone comes at you with a blade the first thing they teach you is accept you are going to get cut. Throw whatever you have to in the way to keep it from your vitals and get in close enough to get them to drop it and make them pay for any attempt to injure you. You are right in the moment, in a real fight people don't act like they think they will. Adrenalin, situation, training and mental state, it all plays a role in the outcome.

I'm Brazilian. The weapon used in the second article is what we call a "terçado", it's basically just a large machete with some kind of cord aroung the grip (I own one that I use to cut waterbottles since I still don't have a sharp sword). Yeah, they have nothing to do with a katana, just the writers being dumb. I have no idea what the first weapon was tho.

I believe the weapon is actually a "shinai" it is a bamboo sword. It's used in *kendo* competition. It's made with various filaments of bamboo and knots of very soft rope. The idea of this weapon is to practice without causing real damage. The guy It's obviously mentally instable to believe he could attack that big of a security guard with this weapon. Or he is just very dumb. The average IQ here in Brazil is 87 or something like that.

I'm looking at this going, "Man, I've been trained on how to deal with this, but even then.." like, that training was in perfect conditions and I was focused. Do I know techniques to disarm? Yeah, I do, but that was against an opponent that wasn't actually trying to harm me. Gotta give props to the security guard for being able to identify and just deal with the problem the way he did. I can only hope that if I'm ever in a similar situation that I can keep cool like this guy.

This is why, as security guards, you should always carry the guard's best friend. A Maglite.

Man you can shatter a windshield with the bigger ones and then still turn it on after. It's like a baton made of metal with a flashlight attached.

Absolute balls of steel. Like Skallagrim said, the man wasn't only protecting himself. He was protecting the women and children. The take away here is if you can't retreat, then blocking with your arm *then* countering is better than not doing anything at all.

Never play around with actual sword even if it's blunt. The edge can still break your flesh. I can empathize with the pain the person who was assaulted, don't wish anyone to undergo that horrific experience. I had major surgery on my left hand from lacerations due to woodworking accident. Seriously, being cut to the bone is painful, the treatment and surgery is pure torment, the surgeon stuck needles for localized anaesthetic into the bone joints and I had dozens during the ordeal. I was awake the entire time the surgeon was poking about, tucking and sewing my flesh together. Afterwards after the anaesthetic wore off and I lie in bed trying to sleep, it hurt so much that each time I dozed off I woken up by the throbbing pain. I can't sleep and I don't have appetite to eat, my mouth taste bitter all the time possibly because of either the medications or shock from the injury. I was lucky I didn't broke any bones, sliced tendons or chopped off anything. But still had months of physiotherapy afterwards. So please take safety very seriously. Don't fool around with blades unless it's a matter of life and death. Once you're injured or lop something off... you'll be laughing at your stupidity for the rest of your life...that is after months of pain in recovery. Edit: the scar is not worth it. They had my scars bound tightly for weeks so it would not bulge out into a painful ugly flesh clump. The bigger the wound, the more care needed for the flesh to heal and mesh together properly especially in the region of important complex muscles like hand and fingers.

once i was doing something on rubber with a machete, it bounced back up and landed on my index finger, not very strongly, and with a blade not that sharp. it still had to be stopped by my bone. now i have a cool "yakuza scar" to remind of that for the rest of my life.

Looks like a shinai. A kendo training sword made from bits of bamboo tied together.

Machete attacks are more common in latin america than what the news report. I did a couple of years of work in latin america, without getting into too much details, it was almost a weekly occurrence that someone would be sent from the rural clinics into the main hospital due to what we call "Chopping wounds" (Lesion contuso-cortante) from machetes. THe machete is a very heavy weapon that by design it has a sharp edge with a lot of mass behind it. So you get both blunt and cutting forces applied on the human body. This means that you get open wounds, clean cuts, tendons chopped off and also fractured bones. The protocol is applying pressure with a gauze and if the artery was compromise do some quick stitches to send them for Xrays. Once you know there are no fractured bones you get clearance to clean with saline, and suture the tissue. While you are cleaning you have to palpate using your finger inside the wound to make sure there are no chipped bone fragments or dirt underneath, even with the Xray clearance you can't take anything for granted. During that process you also test movements for any damaged tendon. If the tendons are fine you close it, if the tendons are compromised you call to see if any plastic surgeon (Mainly the ones oriented into reconstruction) is on guard or available and if noone is available you close the wound and keep the patient around until the plastic surgeon shows up to reopen and finish the tendon repair (So these patients would take up to 24-48 hours to get a proper repair which honestly is not that bad for a poor country). If there is a fracture, ortho bros will take care of everything from fixation of the bone to sutures except tendon repair or blood vessel repairs. Which from experience are some of the most wholesome moments in the surgery room since you have a vascular, a plastic surgeon and a ortho bro discussing what song to play during the surgery.

As a former hospital security officer and current HEMA practitioner, I have to say props to this security officer for his response. I don't know the situation with hospitals and security in Brazil, but I can say from my experience that we were trained to expect all sorts of crazy situations, although I was the only one who ever considered the possibility of a sword-wielding maniac. My fellow officers and I had a lot of experience going hands-on with patients who were violent, and sometimes the patients were able to get ahold of improvised weapons. That never lasted long if we were already there because the moment someone grabbed something like a weapon, they had 2 or 3 security guys jumping them immediately. We knew that the safest approach is to overwhelm with numbers before the attacker has a chance to start swinging

That shatter is very stick like to me, something with very long fibers like bamboo or a sapling. I got some training for defending against blunt weapons after like the second time I was attacked with a baseball bat. You get some priorities like #1 at all costs defend your head, But the thing I'd recomend to this security guard is you gotta step in and block the hands at the very least if not the arms. Never ever let someone get leverage on you with a big swing like that. Bad knees mean I cant run, and being big ment people always went for weapons.

I've been a martial artist for a very long time, taekwondo, judo, kickboxing etc, and I recently took up fencing saber. It is so difficult to defend yourself against a fast weapon when you're also armed, I can't even imagine how difficult it could be trying to fight someone with a weapon disparity like that.

From comment, it being a bamboo sword makes way more sense, the security felt confident. With a sharp one the guard still could really do harm, like if that guy knew what he was doing. Anyways good guard, through i dont want to ask how many knives guys he had to deal with to get that good dealing with that morons that fast. I'm not sure I enjoy these videos. I mean, obviously there is some entertainment value in mad people doing mad stuff, but then again, there are people getting hurt or at least in danger of getting hurt. But as always, your content is highly informative and entertaining, and I'm glad I followed you when I first found your videos. Haven't regretted it once, not gonna stop anytime soon. Keep it up! Also, any advice on merovingian era sword replicas? I've been looking for a while, but there are very few I can find and most are either cheaply made or blunt - the latter isn't necessarily a problem, but the few options are.

I enjoy them. He doesn't go about it in a sensationalist way and doesn't overdo it. As grim as it is, I think it's useful to learn from real life (plus this one has a "good" ending)

Places like India and Latin America has daily machete attacks. Especially in Latin America, a like of gang and cartels regularly use machetes. As a lurker of the webs, I've seen plenty of fights and they never go well, I've grown to greatly respect machete fighting. I've also learned that a tool designed for clearing dense brush and branches... doesn't really struggle with the human equivalent of a thick branch

As a large guy i was hit by a pry bar twice in very similar angles also to left arm, i felt nothing at all. If i didn't see it happening i wouldn't even know it. It was bruised badly but nothing slightly serious, people really underestimate how much damage we can take and how little it would affect us. The guard went for 99% win chance by closing the distance, that attacker was smashed into chairs regardless if he had a real sword, machete etc. His left arm might get seriously wounded but still it wouldn't affect him much at that moment..

This is a regular thing in Brazil.

Nice, another analysis of a real life incident. Good to see a sequel as it were, hope that means these type of videos are doing well for you, it's cool to watch.

This isn’t necessarily a critique on how it was handled here; obviously stress is a factor and he was insane… But I’d honestly say this is more like baseball bat defence… don’t exactly have to worry about ‘edge alignment and false edge strikes’😂💀

Yeah, that is what I was thinking. He's obviously been trained to defend against sticks and bats and in the moment fell back on that training. However, it makes sense now that we know that the "sword" was made of bamboo, and that the security guard was armed as well (his hand is on his hip). As soon as he confirmed the weapon was actually not sharp he chose a non-lethal option, but if it had been a real blade, the guard would have drawn his own weapon instead and this would have ended even worse for the attacker.

Story from a friend. Full knee cap rotation from a hard bump while working as an orderly in a hospital. Got himself wheeled into the ED and it was nothing but jokes. He got treated and things worked out just fine. If there's a place for a workplace accident, it's really already inside a hospital.

I work at a hospital here in Canada and our security are always wear stab resistant vests. It is possible that the guard had something like that on. What i notice by stepping into the swing is the assailant ends up hitting up near the guard , a less than ideal place. There are katana machettes Cold Steel makes one .

When you think you're the main character but actually you're just one of the goons that the main character gets to beat up to show how strong they are to the audience.

One thing to consider for general self defense is putting in some practice looking for and using nearby objects to improvise as defensive or offensive objects, like the chairs for example. Even something like a cup full of water or a potted plant can be thrown at the attackers face to throw him off long enough to move in and gain control or to gain extra time to escape. I would practice throwing objects a short distance from many different starting positions to help increase chances of success. Even just something coming close to he face but missing can sometimes be enough to gain a little extra time. You shouldn't even have to throw super hard, but instead accurately, but the faster and more accurately you throw, the more it will trigger the attacker's instinctual reflex to guard his face, and you may gain more time to act. Sometimes even just making a gesture like you're going to throw something might be able to buy you a second or two. If you put in enough time to practice quick object identification (some fast-paced activities can help increase this ability), you might get good at picking the best objects to use in an instant with just a glance. Don't even think about "fairness" when someone wrongfully attacks you with a deadly object or is about to or even seems like they might be about to, use all the "cheap" tricks you can think of to gain advantage, and the less suspected/common your methods of distraction/improvisation are, the more they might catch attackers off guard, but that's not to say you should prefer to use less commonly used methods just because they're less suspected, but I'm also not saying don't. Use your best discernment and never assume anything when it comes to self defense, but ALWAYS test your methods for overall effectiveness before using them in a real fight. In a pinch, trying to improvise can save your life, but may also cause you to lose it, so be very thoughtful whether or not it's appropriate, and if there's any doubt at all, even for a split second, then probably don't improvise, just act.

You won't get time to think in an assault. Your attacker does the premeditated attack, he has got time and preparation with him, you got only time. And looking out and noting for favorable environment and objects 24/7 is not practical or possible, you might as well be like mad attackers at that point being paranoid 24/7.

That guard deserves a raise.

I am liking these videos and they seem to be doing well. I don't comment much on your vids but figured I'd just say: I've been watching you since I was a pre pubescent child, skallagrim. and im 22 now. The issues you've been facing the last few years have been a shame but I have faith in you. Anyways I watch channels like active self protection so these IRL incident commentary videos definitely are something I like, and I hope they pick the channel up for you. It makes me so angry that you've been suppressed in the algorithm.

The comments confirm my suspicion, the guard casually blocked it because he knew he wasn't in any danger from that object. Still, very bizarre situation and nice conversation about it.

Brazil feels like one of the places where security guards might be more prepared to deal with sword like weapons. They've got plenty of machetes, and given Brazil has the highest population of Japanese outside of Japan, bokkens and other melee wepons might be used there.

Yeah, here in Brazil we've seen some actual machete fights between small town drunkards. However, katana and bokken are not a big threat, since the japanese community here is pretty much harmless. Most crimes here are committed with guns or kitchen knives.
