Unarmed Knife Defense... NOPE.

The video I'm responding to:
"6 Martial Arts Experts Locked with a Knife Attacker!" by Martial Arts Journey
• 6 Martial Arts Experts...
Self-defense is serious, yet it often seems downplayed and underestimated. Especially when it comes to defending yourself unarmed against an attacker armed with a knife (or other weapon). It's a huge disadvantage, and what can you do to deter a reckless, aggressive rush when all you can threaten to retaliate with are your hands and feet?
Kudos to Rokas Leo, Jeff Chan, Icy Mike, Sensei Seth, Ramsey Dewey, and Matt Clinton for stepping up and taking this difficult challenge. It's an insightful reality-check for sure.

23 years ago on the TTC (toronto subway), I saw 2 men fighting, one with a knife. The unarmed guy took his sweater off and used it to tangle up the knife (he used it like a matador would use a cape to taunt a bull - when the guy slashed at him, he interposed his removed sweater like a blanket into the blade's path. The knife cut into the sweater, but also got caught in it for a couple seconds, long enough for the other guy to jump on him and knock him out with a few punches). The unarmed guy was clearly a trained fighter, amateur or otherwise.. but in the panic of the assault, it was fascinating to see that little trick work.

I've been attacked by somebody with a knife. It was the scariest moment of my life. Got away with two stab wounds, both were minor, fortunately. Not every lowlife that attack people with a knife is going to do a decent job at it. Attackers can be drugged, nervous and shaking or out of shape as it was that case for you. The more trained you are the more likely it is that you won't be hurt in those cases.

@@cryptosporidium01 Very true indeed. I have no martial arts training at all but neither did the guy who attacked me. I was physically fitter than him and that's probably why I was able to escape with my life, if I wasn't able to push him off of me I probably would have been killed. The thing that really fucked with me was the fact that I didn't even feel that I was stabbed twice. I only felt it hours after the attack. I also had several slashes in my forearms and they hurt more than the stab wounds.

In most of these scenarios you're well aware of the knife attacker. In most real life situations you wouldn't be, they'd come up from behind and shank you. My point being that you can't be aware of your surrounding all the time. It's impossible. You just being on your phone is a distracting someone could easily exploit. There are so many ways to take someone down without them even knowing about it. These feel like potential bar fight scenarios where one or both are drunk and in rage mode. The good thing is that in reality the odds of you getting stabbed are fairly low to begin with. Many people go through their entire life without ever getting stabbed to begin with.

This is not a realistic scenario, though. This scenario is: You're locked in a room with a person with a knife who is intent on killing you no matter what, who is also invincible and you have nothing but the clothes on your body. I agree that any knife defense that claims to be legitimate should be scrutinized and tested, for sure, but this specific scenario has little grounding in reality.

Reminds me of Fairbairn and Applegate's WW2-era expert advice on hand-to-hand combat for the Commandos, the SOE assassins and other elite fighters: The first rule on fighting an attacker armed with a knife was "If you have a gun, shoot him.". It then went down the list of other techniques, including using your own knife and using all sorts of improvised weapons ( a steel pot helmet works as both a buckler and a dandy club when swung by the chinstrap with verve and desperation). As far as they were concerned, fighting completely unarmed was scraping the absolute bottom of the barrel. And if you had to, you fought dirty -- recommended techniques included things like eye-gouging if you got an opening. On the flip side, for the Pacific theater, CQB training explicitly noted that the average American soldier or Marine was taller and heavier than his average Japanese counterpart and focussed on using that with all-out bullrushing attacks. Of course, all of that training, being military, pre-supposed that running away was not an option, that any fight was to the death, and that any encounter had to be settled quickly before another enemy with a gun showed up to finish you off...

Speaking as someone who has been stabbed (on two separate occasions) this video seems to confirm what i've previously thought: i'm still alive partly because by luck both wounds were in non-vital locations, and secondly because my attackers were not committing at all like the ones in the video. I'm pretty sure one my my attackers went into shock once he actually got me... while i went berserk at my flesh wound. Next thing i remember is beating him into the gravel with my fists until he seemed incapable of standing up. He'd dropped his knife, but if he'd kept hold of it and stabbed a few more times i'm quite certain i'd be dead. Man, this video gives me chills. it's like seeing what could have happened. Wish I had something contructive or informative to say but frankly i'm not any kind of expert. The video seems like a terrifyingly accurate depiction of what a determined attacker would and could do to an unarmed defender.

One problem with the series as a whole are behind the scenes things that so far only Ramsey has talked about. One of them that repeatedly comes up is his questioning of how realistic the scenarios actually are-- how did we get here? What is our escape avenue? Why is someone trying their hardest to stab us to death? Psychology of criminals isn't well represented in the scenarios, essentially. The only reasons he didn't repeat those complaints about the shank tank episode is that when he was a missionary in south America for the Mormon church, he witnessed multiple murders both with guns and with knives, and the knife attacks apparently played out exactly like this. He was having flashbacks during the event, which is why he said it was so unpleasant (oh, he also had a busted knee from the night before, which is why he physically couldn't stay on his feet-- and the pain still wasn't as bad as the flashbacks). So he can't deny it happens, and has always warned his audience about knife attacks. This is also where he got mugged and how he knows not only to comply but the exact way to comply without escalating-- it happened to him more than once.

On the whole attackers being armoured up thing; if someone's high enough or desperate enough they can push through any amount of pain you can dish out, you basically have to knock them out cold, even submissions and nerve responses can fail, and the "refs" did call for the attackers to back off at least once (I think it was Mike's 2v1 he had a guy by the balls) Even without gear you can watch any combat sport and see people walk off the stuff they were doing, getting punched in the face sucks but it sucks less if you're prepared to punch them back, leg kicks and body blows often take repetition over a couple rounds to really take effect, joint locks and submissions work mostly the same gear or no, I figure a rugby player in pads and a tweaker 3 days into withdrawal have about the same Honey Badger energy.

Marine Corps knife training when I was in, unarmed vs a knife, you go for an arm break. It probably wouldn't be super effective against a specialist knife fighter unless you got very lucky, but against enemy soldiers where the knife is a backup weapon at best and likely a desperation weapon it's probably the way to go. Probably difficult to safely replicate this. If you're trying to do this sort of thing for real you really have to unleash serious brutality and commit to crippling or even killing your attacker.

Of course, thick and layered helps a lot too! You still have to actually deal with the guy with the knife, but you go from 'will almost certainly take serious injuries in the process even if you succeed' to 'might get away with only minor injuries if successful, and are a bit more likely to survive the experience if the other guy isn't dead set on making absolutely sure you are Definitely dead if unsuccessful'.

Use your weak arm as a shield while attempting to disarm the enemy. Interesting point, I attended a seminar quite a few years ago now, done by a bloke who had served with the Shin Bett (Israeli equivalent of M15). He tackled unarmed defence against a knife attack. He made it clear that if you are unable to escape, then you are going to get badly injured, simple as that, if you survive at all. The defence they were taught was to be as reckless as the attacker, put them on the defensive then you stand a bit of a chance. He said as soon as they pull a knife, you attack them and go full out, go for the eyes, the throat, the genitalia; scream, shout, spit, if you feel like you're going to vomit then vomit on yourself - they aren't going to want to come close - or on them. Don't try and make them go away, go to incapacitate them and don't even think about the knife or you'll be too slow.

Based on extensive data from across time & space, stab wounds in most locations do little or nothing to hinder a sufficiently motivated person in the short term. It takes blood loss or damage to the central nervous system to reliably incapacitate a person. This applies to bullet wounds as well, though they typically cause more blood loss than stabs & typically do more damage to bone, etc. We have ample historical & recent examples of people stabbed in or around the heart who remain active for at least around ten seconds & sometimes more. We have examples of folks who get stabbed in the head & don't immediately drop. Lots of people who get stabbed don't even realize they've been stabbed until later. & so on.

He dropped the blade and I kept him standing up and held the blade under my foot while waiting for the police to arrive (they were called before hand). Most of what he taught us had us wielding our own knives for one but there were three big takeaways I had from it: First, knives are terrifying and even if you win you're almost certainly going to get hurt. Second, every defense technique we learned essentially broke down into "control the blade just long enough to get an opening and use that opening to brutally injure your attacker." Third, your chances of survival go up substantially if you move first but in most situations where you'd have that opportunity it's safer to just give up your wallet or run.

The problem is one that even Ramsey conceded on his channel: using markers as knife analogues sucks, because you can't grab the marker itself. It's too short, won't get entangled in clothes or flexible weapons, etc. It doesn't resemble a pocket folder either because the grip to blade ratio is skewed. At best it resembles a box cutter, which have been used as weapons, but those have really flimsy blades that are liable to snap on the first or second successful stab, and it won't get deep penetration either way. And don't get me started on the problem with slashes-- clothes like a windbreaker can reasonably protect you even from more serious knife cuts, which is why most combat knives emphasize stabbing. Admittedly, knife defense training has a problem with finding the perfect knife analogue that has the perfect balance between safety and realism. So it's understandable so many training centers use markers-- if nothing else they are cheap.

There are some techniques and moves that CAN help you disarm or fight an armed opponent, but the odds are still stacked against you and you should avoid it unless you have literally no other options. Me and a couple of sparring partners used to practice this same way with a red sharpie(Our goal was merely to survive the round with as few red marks as possible). The catch 22 of training to fight someone with a knife is there's only two ways to handle it in a real scenario: Disarm or kill. Both have to be lightning fast and can seriously harm a training partner if done correctly, so you can't really get better at it. You also mentioned the skill aspect, and you're right. Like, I'm sure I personally could disarm the average person(due to 4 years of training for MMA competition), but someone of similar or better skill? Eh... Maybe??? The problem I see in this video is that they just grapple the attacker, which is literally THE WORST THING you could do against an armed opponent(I.E. present your exposed rib cage to someone with a pointy thing). The only way I see unarmed is to try and bat the first swing or thrust away and strike for groin or try and lunge for the eyes, and in that split moment that they are disoriented, try and just end them. If you miss your opportunity, your opponent is NOT going to give you a second chance. But, the best thing to do would be to grab an object of your own. At least you have something to put between you and the attacker, and maybe, just maybe, clock them in the skull with the object. It's not impossible to defend against a knife assailant, just very, very, very difficult to do, and you just have to KNOW WTF you need to do and how to do it. For anyone that's about to say it: I'm not being an armchair warrior. I trained for MMA competition for 4 years, and have done this same exact thing as a training tool. It's possible, but ONLY in certain scenarios, and with a LOT of skill and a healthy dose of luck. I definitely came out of plenty of our knife sessions looking like a red-striped tiger! Lol.

I think my only one issue with the Shank Tank was that the attackers had no need to defend, due to the protective gear but this was addressed in the live stream with Rokas and Jeff. Jeff said, during that live stream, that next time he'd recommend that the defenders went full on and didn't pull their attacks because the protective gear was there to keep the attacker safe and that in their own delivered sessions of this (outside the Ultimate Self Defense Championship) that this had resulted in the attacker occasionally losing the scenario (due to recovering from a heavy strike combination etc). Nice breakdown, I enjoyed it and popped over following Martial Arts Journey flagging you'd posted about it :)

The problem with these types of challenges is that you can't do the tactics that would give you a chance. If you are stuck in a room with someone with a knife and there is no escape of weapon you can use, you're only hope is to break the opponent in the first few moves. Grab the arm and break it, stomp on their knee, jam their nose bone into their brain, do SERIOUS damage to the solar plexus. Those are some of your only chances, which are tactics you can't really use in a challenge like this.

Just prepare yourself for it, ignore it, and go for the vital parts of the body. Groin, plexus, upstriking the nose bone. Control the knife arm if you can, but you must end the fight in one move or you are going to die. And you can’t really do that in this king of challenge setting.

For example the knife could land a fight ending wound immediately to a artery or central nervous system hit, or the defense could land a fight ending organ popping or bone breaking kick immediately with paralyzing pain. It does do a good job showing just how fast and brutal and hard it could be.

Now normally you definitely don't want to be on the ground on your back in any fight, but here's what I'm thinking: You can kick and keep someone away reasonably well if you're on the ground and they're not on top of you. Also if they are standing up with a knife, it is kinda akward to stab or cut someone lying down without them getting on at least one knee first. Would be interesting for the sake of an experiment to try this out.

Great video! I used to take Krav Maga class. the first thing the instructor said that if you are menaced by a knife (for example for money), you should give away the money. no questions asked. if however it is a life and death situation, you should consider and balance out pros and cons. he tought us some tecniques to use, the same you showed (go for the hand of the knife, disarm, and so on. then he entroduced ince a month the redman. the redman was basically a training where you where disarmed and with no protection, while him was in a red shell (helmet, chest protection, leg and arm protection). 30 seconds round (felt like 3 minutes). he could attack you with bare hands or a stick or a knife(fake knife). you just have to react and not get beaten up. his strenght was of course limited but the intesity was 100%real. you ended up out of breath, a little bit beaten up (from the stick usually) and emotionally damaged by the fact that you could not defend a knife attack without injuries.

The other issue he has is as an ex-MMA pro, an impaired vision, coupled with the helmet he was wearing, basically no vision. The injury he puts down to the sleep deprivation from jet lag and lack of sleep due to work he had where he teaches in China, but also he had recovered from having COVID a week before. So, with all these injuries amounted and as the oldest participant, he did very well. This is also the reason why he hated this so much, even though he has done things just as intense before but found it much easier.

" _The best chance to survive a knife attack is to have a sword_ " Gonna have to agree with you on that one. There's another aspect that we went over in some of our training, and that was a case study reviewing hundreds of videos taken from camera footage of knife attacks. Turned out that roughly 70% of them were surprise attacks. Generally speaking: if someone really wants to stab you, they aren't going to announce their intentions or reveal the knife. In other words you've already been stabbed before you know what's happening, and depending on *where* you've been stabbed, your ability to react and defend yourself is further diminished. And if you do see it coming, and you have had proper training, and you can't run away, and you have to fight or your life, and even if you are successful, there's virtually zero chance you'll achieve this without getting sliced to buggery.

We did knife defense in a self defense class in college. The point of the exercise was "Don't try to fight someone with a knife. You will get stabbed. Just run." The only thing that sort of worked was kicking, but it was always a matter of (very little) time before you would miss, or cut your leg cut. Side note: saw examples of the "jacket method". I had brought a jacket, and even weights to put in the pockets to make it heavy. It is much harder than you might think, and in real life the knife just goes through. We also tried throwing the jacket at them and kicking the knife wielder down. We ran into issues with that being too dangerous for practice, but it isn't particularly effective anyway. Having your own marker worked best because you could make space by threatening the attacker, but if they were willing to bet stabbed, you'd get stabbed too. The phrase I remember was "Congratulations, you won. Your prize is you might get to die in the ambulance instead of the street."

I've always been of the opinion that if you're in a situation where you feel your only way out is to use a knife, forget about "never pull a knife unless you're willing to use it." It should be "never pull out a knife unless you fully INTEND on using it." And the other person shouldn't even be aware that you have it until the point when they're wondering why they're bleeding all over the place. …Oh, and make sure you have a good lawyer if you live in a state that doesn't have a stand your ground laws, because you're more likely to get away with using a gun for self defense than you are with a knife. And with the gun, you're more likely to get off when you shoot to kill than you are if you shoot to wound, regardless of whether or not you actually kill them. And that came from a cop, and was backed up by other cops i asked over subsequent years. It's all about "being in fear for your life," and the way the average person responds to such scenarios. Hint: they're usually not concerned with "winging" the assailant, they're just concerned with getting out of the situation with their lives. I live in Massachusetts. I remember 10 or 11 years ago a guy attempted to mug a man at knife point. Unfortunately for the mugger, the person he was trying to rob ran an MMA gym outside Boston*. It ended up with the mugger disarmed and suffering a broken jaw. The police came and decided it was clearly a self defense scenario. The mugger was placed under arrest and brought to the hospital. His intended victim was allowed to leave with a pat on the back and an attaboy. A couple hours later the was a knock at his door. He answered it and the two cops that had responded to the call were standing there with apologetic looks on their faces. They informed him that they were there to place him under arrest, because the prosecutor decided his response to being robbed at knife point was unwarranted. He was charged with aggravated assault and battery with a deadly weapon: the f'cking knife he was threatened with and took off the mugger. So yeah, he had that going for him. *Getting in fight in a bar is FAR more dangerous now than it was in my bar hopping days twenty years ago. It seems like half of everyone you meet is taking some form of jiu jitsu or some shit like that.

If your knife attacker is truly skilled, you will never even see the knife. A security guard here tried to intervene to mediate a dispute, and was stabbed through the heart without ever knowing his attacker was even armed. In an earlier post, I mentioned Capt. Fairbairn and Col. Applegate of WW2 Commando and SOE/OSS training fame. That was about their advice on defending against knife attacks. Their advice on carrying out knife attacks was equally brutal: In an ideal "knife fight", your enemy doesn't even realize you *have* a knife until you have killed him with it. You *never* brandish your knife; you either use it or you don't even display it. Capt. Fairbairn reportedly demonstrated this to every new candidate to SOE school (and possibly the Commando courses) in an unforgettable fashion. In the 1940s, almost everyone smoked. The British battlejacket had chest patch pockets that were the perfect size to hold a pack of cigarettes and a lighter or matches, so that was what most people carried in them. Capt. Fairbairn modified his right chest pocket to conceal a full-sized FS dagger - the hilt sat in the pocket hidden behind the cigarette pack while the blade went through a slit in the inside bottom of the pocket and into a sheath sewn inside the jacket. From the outside, all he had in his pocket was the usual pack of cigarettes. Capt. Fairbairn would individually greet each new recruit, engage them in conversation, then ask if they wanted a cigarette while casually reaching into his pocket. The next thing they knew, they had 7" of razor sharp steel pressed against their throat and were being told: "You're dead.". None of them ever saw it coming. And none of them ever forgot Fairbairn's First Rule of Knife Fighting either: "Don't fight. Kill." Apprently, many of the uniformed Commandos trained by the captain subsequently carried their FS knives concealed in a similar fashion sewn inside their battledress chest patch pockets or trouser cargo pockets to give them a surprise "edge" in a sudden close encounter.

But if you are naked against the attacker, this is a great example.

one thing to remember, the 'attacker' here is quite skilled and experienced, using feints, body position, and grappling to give himself the best advantage, not exposing the knife, and so on. Most RL attacks by a knifeman that result in a kill the knifeman is 15-25 years old with no martial experience, and usually holds the knife out way in front of them or over their heads to show it off. Against these people you *might* have a chance, by concentrating on the knife arm, if you can get 2 hands on the knife arm and twist it, remembering the attacker does not know how to fight other than how to stab so will tend not to try and grapple or use his legs, that is a way you could beat the knifeman without taking stabs.
