In fact, the speech isn't written or recorded and we don't know what exactly he said, but Unamuno wrote some notes in a letter he carried, and the speech written in the script is based on that notes.

Most of what we know about the speech comes from an article of Luis Portillo on the "Horizon" magazine, which was later reported by historian Hugh Thomas on his book about the Spanish Civil War. The veracity of Portillo's account has been widely questioned and historian Saveriano Delgado has described his version as a "liturgical drama"

What he said is written but it was a lot less anti-falangist than this. He basically said: "I'm with franco but watch out, we don't want to defeat bolshevism and exchange it with a right wing totalitarian state". It was more like a constructive criticism to contain the excesses and the future regime of the army.

@@TheAnikeenko Unamuno said a couple of things that are shown, but half of the speech is invented Those who attended the speech were neither military nor Falangists, they were the wealthy people of Salamanca After the speech, no one began to sing the "cara al sol" or to insult him, it simply created a great uproar Millan Astray shouted "death to traitorous intellectuals" and said nothing more The movie is pretty good, but if you know about the history behind it, it becomes a giant pile of shit

It was an ad hoc speech against stupidity and he reacted to a previous speech and the slogans of the general, Unamuno became a beacon of truth in his temple of education and his actual speech and his poems should be taught in schools, kept in libraries worldwide. As he stood up for what is truly human beyond all -isms and ideologies, despite their increasingly violent character. He didn't address the militant Falangists alone, though as the movie clip suggests.

Spain has always been very divided. Since we got independence from France in 1814, we have had 4 civil wars including this one, and we had many more of them before this historical event. Imagine that a civil war in your country happens at that time and the public opinion about Franco and the war keeps frozen as a taboo topic till 1975.

yet, even in their propaganda piece at the end, the leftist cunts that made the movie could not properly portray Franco's side as "bad". The wife of the man he was critiquing was the one who saved his stupid ass. He was not thrown in prison, or sentenced to death. Always stupid intellectuals speaking out of their ass causing trouble of magnificent proportions. case in point in actual history: the insurgency that caused the Iranian "revolution" of 1979 was vastly supported by "Intellectuals", which amounted to stupid, youth who had not even finished their degrees, and their even stupider professors who went behind a power hungry, fanatic, Iran hating man. Same shit happened in Chile. One country was doomed, the other was saved

Many may not have seen more than this scene, especially English-speaking people. For those who say oh he was a hero and blabla, who know that he belonged to the fascist party Spanish phalanx, before he was red and at the moment of truth he shit on top because he did not see the war well and at the decisive moment he cowered, nobody wanted to bury Unamuno for fear of the military, who in the end was buried by his last comrades of the phalanx. Add that this film has historical manipulation, the military Republican symbols and they wanted the flag of three colors, but the Carlists denied and were just as important as the Falangists and do not appear in the film, but thanks to them Spain has today the flag of 2 colors... In general terms the film is fine, but let's not take the film as if it were a history book because it is not so, although the facts coincide we must understand that Spanish cinema is full of communists and if they can destroy a statue that a national soldier saved 100 Jews they will not hesitate to destroy it to hide it in history

"Extrañamente" moriría el 31 de diciembre del mismo año cuando un general fascista le había visitado uno o dos días antes Unamuno initially supported the coup because he thought it would be a way to save and stabilize Spain, but seeing Falangist ideas and mainly in this event, on Columbus Day (October 12) in the auditorium of the University of Salamanca in 1936 when it would stop supporting the rebel side. he would "suddenly" die on December 31 of the same year when a fascist general had visited him a day or two before

I don't know about that. This was a period in history where the Spanish fascists came to power in a coup and then killed anyone who opposed them during and after the war. Franco's regime murdered many people. Even in this clip it's very clear that the man could've been killed by the fascist supporters if that woman hadn't taken him from the room. I'm unaware of college conservatives in America being sentenced to death by firing squad or sent to political prisoner camps.
