I had a problem with that same type of switch earlier this year. Repairman came to pull the defective switch and replace it, but didn't have the correct replacement. Plan B popped into my head. I had an obsolete piece of equipment in my junk box with the correct switch. Pulled the switch out and replaced the failed switch. Voila, back in business. I'm glad I threw that obsolete piece of equipment in my junk box. Thanks for helping me think outside the box, Mustie! I really like your channel!
You got me to thinking, back in the 60's as an electronics technician I used to drop whole receiver or transmitter chassis in to a large ultrasonic cleaner containing trichloroethylene and was thinking how dangerous that was in that small room even though it had ventilation. I guess we are lucky to be alive because every thing we used to do is now dangerous.
I’ve been watch this guy for about 4 years now and can’t believe he doesn’t have a million subs!!! This channel is a real education

Your information is amazing. Always been mechanical but mystifed by carb work. My bike stopped idling aand because of your videos, i pulled the carb, inspected the bowl, ran a wire through the pilot jet, blew through the needle valve float up and float down just to check :). Back together and running like a champ. Thanks buddy!!

Great to hear.
I've just bought an ultrasonic cleaner for cleaning carbs after seeing yours do it's magic! I've just done a SU carb that was sat for years and it worked a treat
I too have had to bypass a power switch on some of my electric tools and I usually just plug them into a switched power strip and it works perfect to be able to have an on off switch that way and a built in circuit breaker. Thanks for the video bud and thanks for taking me on the adventure with you it was fun to see inside one of those cleaners.
Recently found your channel and now I'm addicted. Love your content and your easy style. I've had a great time binge watching your old vids. Many many thanks.
Thanks for the bus ride, nice bridge, reminds me of the bridge from Cape May NJ to Wildwood
I just ordered a six liter one of these. I'll likely just leave the switch on all the time and not stress the switch until it finally gives out - just will use an external switch. I will open the base on mine to be sure that everything looks good after seeing that loose wire like yours had. Great video and thanks for all you do- I've learned a lot from watching you and just want to say a big THANKS - you've helped me with my small engine repairs many times by watching how you do things!
Not a bad way to start the day. Got almost 12 hours of sleep after an exhausting saturday. Have one of my favorite energy drinks. And l check my email and see a notification email for a new Mustie1 video! Glad that it was a simple fix on the cleaner and that it wasn't something on one of those transformers or another PCB. Even if you had bought that cleaner it would have paid for itself several times over with the amount of carbs it's helped you bring back from the dead on various projects.
Hey buddy! I picked up a free 1965 Evinrude 18hp that had been sitting for like 20 years. Just got it running real nice. That video you did a year ago on the 10hp (56 i think it was) had the same lower end so that was a massive help for me when I went in to service the water pump. I've learned an enormous amount from your videos so thank you and keep doin what yer doin :)
Gotta get me one of those ultrasonic cleaners. They look real handy for doing stuff out in the garage... Thumbs up! 👍🏻😎🇨🇦

Good job getting around that weak-point cheapy switch, and getting the cleaner back operating. That thing is a help, and must admit that I'm still doing the dunking in the cans with vibrations provided by me shaking and swishing it around. But when they get down enough, will probably get one myself.
Mustie, Thanks for not editing out the bit where you try to turn it on without the fuse in it. A lesser man would have edited that out to save his vanity, fearful of revealing he was only human and thus prone to mistakes. I've got a similar cleaner I bought it broken and had to fit some new fuses and a few resisters and re solder a few dry joints in it works now heats up and vibration but no display on the little screen but it cleans well and only cost a few pounds and it's kept it out of a land fill
I designed and built those machines for 12 years. The one you have there is a pretty high end unit for the size. You never want to get near those elements when its running, very very high voltage. 40Khz is mid range. The 50Khz are the lightweights and those are the ones that harbor freight etc. sell. The 25Khz are the heavy duty elements. Oh yeah, one more thing, never run them dry.

Is it true that only using water is best in them? I'm looking to buy one for the same use as Mustie
Thanks for the video. I am one of the ones needing this info. Thanks again
Mustie1, once agian you save the day. I picked up two Ultra Sonic cleaners from a auction house near me. One is a 27 L and the other a 30 L and both have worked great till yesterday. Since getting laid off due to the Hunan Flu deal, I decided to put them to work by offering cleaning of whatever to whomever I can get. Any way, I was cleaning a couple motorcycle carbs yesterday when one of them wouldn't turn on. I freaked for about 30 seconds till I remembered this vid. I finished up the carbs using just one and drained the other. How I run them is filling them with water and using metal water tight containers with the parts and whatever cleaning solution works for the job. That way I can have a carb in one and doing rust removal in the other but using the same machine. Any ways, I pulled up this vid and thanks to you had my other one up an running in no time. Watching your vids is like having that Jack of all trades friend, helping you out when you need it. Thanks agian
Nice videos keep up the good work. 👍

Enjoyed the ride over the bridge right up until you blew right thru that red light! Awesome video once again.
Great to see what powers it. Awesome
You may want to re-tape down the temp sensor to bottom of tub.... if it comes off you'll overheat. it might be the cause of switch fail...... since its loose now.
Just ordered the 10L…saw how well yours works so yea, had to have one!
Despite the switch issue,it still looks like a quality piece of equipment.

I know from many years of experience that you always check those kind of fuses with an ohmmeter. If they are the big flat blade ones a visual check will do but, the smaller ones always check. I spent two days troubleshooting a mainframe computer system because the fuse looked good.
Congrats on 200K subscribers

It was better back then. They changed the formula.
A few tips with these ultrasonic cleaners, empty the device once a month, depending on use, I set up a filtering system in line on the drain, a length of clear tubing and a simple briggs fuel filter, and then a paper fuel filter, in tandem they clean the liquid almost perfect, it takes a little time to drain but really cleans the liquid well, but the one guy here is right, tape the temp sensor back down other wise it will over heat, I never use the on/off switch just unplug it, and as for a liquid, for cleaner, use 50% simple green purple, 25% white distilled vinegar, and 25% distilled water, best cleaner I ever used.
You cracked me up when you first plugged it in and my screen when dark. I am think good grief he killed power to his shop, then the commercial came on. Good one there. Love my ultrasonic cleaner, I use stuff called Ed's Red gun cleaning solution to clean most everything.

From what I've read and heard the power switches on these are almost intentionally set up to fail by the time the factory warranty is up. Good to know repairing it is as simple as bypassing the switch

Nice fix Mustie 👍🏻
Thanks to Mustie. Love the public comments. Are dials or digital better for reliability of these units? Cheers from Australia
Hi Mustie1 I just took delivery of one of these ultrasonic cleaners, the smaller unit with 6 L volume, but same brand. I have never used an ultrasonic cleaner before, but since I've got some carburetors that are giving me problems, I thought I'd get one. I'm the kind that never unplug any cords, so if the breaker fails on mine, I'll definitely replace it. Possibly put in a relay, if the problem is that the breaker is too weak for the application. Greetings from Sweden
The machine shop I work in found that running 100% simple green All Purpose Cleaner works really well at cleaning sharpening stones/parts. Recommended it to a friend who tried it to clean a carburetor for a chainsaw. Apparently it worked way better than his soapy water mixture.
@beakittelscherz5419
3 жыл бұрын
Can you precise that? Obviously there are about 6 different simple green variations ... . Thanks!
People in the comments, howling about the chinese switch quality (or lack thereof!), but the cleaner vibrates at 40,000 hertz- there aren't many switches that can take that for years on end. Your bypass solution is definitely the trick, and the glue is a nice touch.
@mustie1
5 жыл бұрын
on the new ones they got rid of the switch all together
I had the same cheap switch on my hot air soldering tool. It did the same thing. My ultrasonic cleaner is about half the size of Mustie's. I wish I'd have bought the larger one with the drain.
I've seen you mention the Gunk carb cleaner kits a few times now. For around the same price (but for more fluid) you can buy the Gunk Hydroseal cleaner by the gallon for your ultrasonic washers. Great stuff! Of course, then you don't get a paint can from it or the little basket. I've used it for a while now for carbs and swear by it.
Gunk is the best carb cleaner I have ever used, and it gets parts totally clean, without the 40 hertz times 6. I would think the high frequency vibration would do even better, and do it a lot quicker. Also painters use what's called cheese cloth, and if you fold it double or more it will probably filter everything. It won't be quick, it would have to be left over night, but it should make the Gunk last longer. To that I will say I have never done as many carb parts in a year as you do in a month, so it evaporates, even though I seal the can as much as possible. Kinda like it was running last year. :-)
Mustie1, thought you would hot glue a new (hoard) switch in. Oh well, works now and that’s all that matters. Loved the submarine shot!
I’m ordering one. Tnks for showing.
the ultrasonic need some loves after all the miracle hes doin!:)
I sensed that look in your eye when you spotted that sub. Just remember you gotta get it on the lift first.
Steve, from the "Steve's Small Engine Saloon" Channel, suggests filling the ultrasonic cleaner with water and then have smaller plastic containers that you place your choice of cleaning solution or solvent into and then set those and the item that needs to be cleaned into the water in the ultrasonic cleaned. That allows easier changes between cleaner/solvents and a lot less wastage.

Yes. I am going to try that. Parts and solvents in a jar, water in the cleaner.
Hey Mustie to solve the weak power issue in the unit increase the cord size, I had noticed my cord would get warm when running the heat plus vibration at turn-on, I cut the cord out of mine and inspected, my cord turned out to be aluminum wire coated with copper, I replaced it with a proper 16 gauge ul listed copper cord and no more warm cords and it comes up to temp faster
I bought a 2 litre unit for small carburetors that get varnished up from ethanol. I use fresh gasoline as the cleaner without using heat. I fill the tank with water then put the gasoline with the part in a ziplock bag keeping the tank clean. Works great
You can go to any restaurant and ask them for one of the filters they use to strain the deep fryer. It's like a giant coffee filter. Works really good for that application.
New to the videos, this old dog has learned so many new tricks. Thank you so much for sharing. I am not going to miss any going forward. I went out and bought the same make of Ultrasonic (A little smaller, I don't plan on working on "the big stuff", but just wondering if anyone has caught what temp he is running the Gunk at? I see mixed opinions and I am sure I want to go with Gunk, just don't wanna burn the garage down.
I bet you could run all your fluid through like a stack of coffee filters or something just to clean it up nice and good other then that great video thanks for the help as usual.
I use ultrasonics at work every day. Some are tanks that use a water based antisurficant and wax disolver, another is a multi stage automated machine using petroleum distillates to clean micro mechanics and watch movements. Ultrasonic waves travel quite nicely thuough all the solutions. One way to check the action of the ultrasonic waves used to be to toss a wadded up ball of aluminium foil in the solution and it should start to un ball when turned on. I havent tried that in about 20 years but it worked on an old vacumme tube one i had years ago.
Great! Glad it's running again. Maybe now you can use it on the Carb of the DOUBLE-CAB.
This is why I miss the old 'Radio Shack' stores. If you had a bad switch there was always a good possibility that they would have the exact thing you needed in stock for a few dollars.
